◦I chose the Easter Rising of 1916 for my defining moment in history because if it didn’t happen we would probably still be ruled by the United Kingdom

◦England ruled Ireland for nearly 800 years
◦Many past rebellions had been defeated.◦Many attempts at Home Rule failed.◦A Gaelic revival began in the1880s. The
GAA and Sinn Fein were set up.◦The IRB were getting active◦General dissatisfaction against the
British began to show – 1913 General Lockout strike.

◦Started on Easter Monday the 24th of April.◦Seized key locations in Dublin
Key locations were the GPO, Jacobs biscuit factory, Four Courts, Marrowbone Lane and St Stephens Green.
◦Pearse Proclaimed an Irish Republic.◦There was fierce fighting in the streets◦British Army Reinforcements were sent to
Dublin from England on April the 26th.◦ On Saturday the 29th of April Pearse
issued a surrender order.

◦Basically saying that he doesn't want the Irish citizens to get hurt and also that they were outnumbered.
◦A total of 3,430 men and 79 women were arrested and 90 people were sentenced to death.
◦Fifteen of those (including all seven signatories of the proclamation) were executed.

◦ The Rising was not popular with the Irish People when it happened – Dublin destroyed, people killed
◦ However the people were angry about the executions and now were supporting the rebels.
◦ By 1918 the republican cause was the dominant one in Ireland and the Irish volunteers were ready to fight for their country.
◦ The dail was formed on January 21st 1919 and independence was declared.
◦ The War of Independence of 1919 to 1921 grew out of it.

of Ireland.◦ War of Independence and Civil War continued
from 1916 to 1924.◦ Many of the participants in the 1916 Rising were
very important in Irish politics like Michael Collins, Eamon DeValera.
