PECULIARITY & TOOLS OF CRICKET

+ test match can go on for ,ve days and still end in a draw. -o otherteam sport takes even half as much time to complete.

+ curious characteristic of cricket is that the length of the pitch is

speci,ed//yardsbut the si0e or shape of the ground is not.  Cricket*s most important tools are all made of natural! preindustrial

materials. )he bat is made with leather! twine and cork. Even todayboth bat and ball are handmade! not industrially manufactured. )hematerial of the bat changed slightly over time. nce it was cut outof a single piece of wood. -ow it consists of two pieces! the bladewhich is made out of the wood of the willow tree and the handle

which is made out of cane.  2nlike golf and tennis! cricket has refused to remake its tools with

industrial or manmade materials3 plastic! ,berglass and metalhave been ,rmly rejected.

)he invention of vulcani0ed rubber led to the introduction of pads in1'4' and protective gloves soon afterwards! and the modern gamewould be unimaginable without helmets made out of metal andsynthetic lightweight materials.

QUAREL BETWEEN THE PARSIS AND

THE BOMBAY GYMKHANA

)he white cricket elite in &ndia oered no help to the enthusiasticParsis. &n fact! there was uarrel between the Bombay 8ymkhana!a whites only club! and Parsi cricketers over the use of publicpark. )he Parsis complained that the park was left un,t for cricketbecause the polo ponies of the Bombay 8ymkhana dug up thesurface.

6hen it became clear that the colonial authorities were prejudiced

in favour of their white compatriots! the Parsis built there owngymkhana to play cricket in. )he rivalry between the Parsis andthe Bombay 8ymkhana had a happy ending for these pioneers of&ndian cricket. + Parsi team beat the Bombay 8ymkhana at cricketin 1''9! just 4 years after the foundation of the &ndian -ationalCongress in 1'':!an organisation that was lucky to have amongstits early leaders the great Parsi statesman and intellectual

;adabhai -aoroji.
