CRICKET???

Earlier cricket used to thrive greatly as a gambling game.People used to place huge amounts of bets in matches andthus the game started to get recognition. Cricket was in facta major gambling sport towards the end of the 17thcentury .

By the 17th century the game was uite popular as a rough

rural pastime! but in the following century the leisure classestook up the sport! particularly in "usse#! $ent! and %ondon.

&n the year 17'7! the (arylebone Cricket Club also known(CC was created. )he (CC has since then gone on tobecome one of the most prominent bodies in world cricket .

%ate1'th century was a very crucial phase for thedevelopment of the game! both within and outside Britain.

)he invention of vulcani0ed rubber led to the introduction of pads in1'4' and protective gloves soon afterwards! and the modern gamewould be unimaginable without helmets made out of metal andsynthetic lightweight materials.



ORIGINS OF INDIAN CRICKET

)he origins of &ndian cricket! that is! cricket played by&ndians are to be found in Bombay and the ,rst&ndian community to start playing the game was thesmall community of 5oroastrians! the Parsis.

Brought into close contact with the British because of

their interest in trade and the ,rst &ndian communityto westernise! the Parsis founded the ,rst &ndiancricket club! the riental Cricket Club in Bombay in1'4'. Parsi clubs were funded and sponsored byParsi businessmen like the )atas and the 6adias

)he white cricket elite in &ndia oered no help to the enthusiasticParsis. &n fact! there was uarrel between the Bombay 8ymkhana!a whites only club! and Parsi cricketers over the use of publicpark. )he Parsis complained that the park was left un,t for cricketbecause the polo ponies of the Bombay 8ymkhana dug up thesurface.

6hen it became clear that the colonial authorities were prejudiced

in favour of their white compatriots! the Parsis built there owngymkhana to play cricket in. )he rivalry between the Parsis andthe Bombay 8ymkhana had a happy ending for these pioneers of&ndian cricket. + Parsi team beat the Bombay 8ymkhana at cricketin 1''9! just 4 years after the foundation of the &ndian -ationalCongress in 1'':!an organisation that was lucky to have amongstits early leaders the great Parsi statesman and intellectual
