HISTORY OF THE CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY BAND Compiled by Jennifer Nelson The Concordia University Band was originally formed by Dr. Richard Fischer with the intent of playing a few pieces at the Spring Music Festival, an annual concert featuring a few selections from most of the various ensembles at Concordia, on April 24, 1994. The new University Band was made up of members of Wind Symphony, students at Concordia who were not in Wind Symphony, Concordia alumni, and members of the community at large. There were no auditions for this group, and Dr. Fischer really had no idea of what level the players from the community or non-Wind Symphony members would be. The first rehearsal of the Concordia University Band was on December 2, 1993. After the first few rehearsals, Dr. Fischer decided this group was good enough to do an entire independent concert. The first University Band (also known as U-Band) concert was on April 15, 1994 and was held in Geiseman Auditorium, also known as the South Gym. U-Band also performed at the Spring Music Festival on April 24, 1994. Only a few current (fall 2009) University Band members were present for this concert: Jennifer (Gohl) Nelson flute/piccolo, Kathy Fischer clarinet and Louise Olivo-Kier tuba (in later concerts primarily oboe). Louise and Jennifer have played every University Band season. Other current long time members Kristin Aasmundstad-Walsh clarinet, Paul Gruenwald trumpet, and Dick Snyder trumpet joined in the second season, and Christina Lass Moore flute, Ellen Waterman flute (soon switched to bassoon), David Reed flute, and Robert Hartney clarinet, joined U-Band the third season. Over the years the University band has undergone many changes. In the early years, from 1994-2000, the December and March concerts were divided between the University Chorus and the University Band. In 2001 the University Chorus was disbanded, and from then on, concerts were entirely University Band. From 1996-2000, the University Band played an independent concert in the fall for Concordia’s Homecoming festivities. From 2001-2003 there were no fall concerts. Beginning in 2004, the fall concert was restored to the schedule, but this time in the form of the Family Concert, designed to appeal to children and get them excited about music. The annual late- June Patriotic concert was started in 1996. In 2005, this concert became the setting for the Concordia Ice Cream Social. Dr. Fischer has conducted every concert except for three during the 2000-2001season when he was on sabbatical. University Band trombonist and director of bands at Conant High School John Walsh conducted those concerts. From 2003-2005, the University Band experimented with having a board of directors. Dr. Fischer sought the board’s input for ideas of how to raise U- Band’s standards, to get more consistency of members staying with the group from one concert to the next, and to have better attendance of members. In August of 1994 there had been auditions for all members to determine seating for the second season, but for years after that, anyone who had wanted to be in U-Band would just show up and play, and this sometimes led to some people just showing up when they felt like it with very inconsistent attendance.

Dr. Fischer sought the board’s input for ideas of how to raise U-Band’s standards, to get more consistency of members staying with the group from one concert to the next, and to have better attendance of members. In August of 1994 there had been auditions for all members to determine seating for the second season, but for years after that, anyone who had wanted to be in U-Band would just show up and play, and this sometimes led to some people just showing up when they felt like it with very inconsistent attendance. There was considerable personnel turnover from concert to concert, so many who had auditioned were no longer there, and those who were there had not auditioned. As a result, there was limited organization among the sections in regards to chair placement, who would take solo parts, and who was the section leader. These problems were identified as key elements that were holding the group back from realizing its potential. The audition process was re-instated in the summer of 2005, with all members playing an audition. Currently new members are admitted by audition with Dr. Fischer.

Jean Harrison Bojes, professor of music education at Concordia, began giving commentaries in outdoor concerts in the late ‘90’s, primarily because there were no printed programs at those events. Her thoughtful and trivia-filled insights to the pieces became such a hit with the audience that they began to ask why she was not doing the indoor ones too, and so she became a regular feature at all concerts beginning with the December 7, 2001 concert.

Over the years, many U-Band members have been featured as soloists in concerts, and Concordia faculty members and other guests have also soloed with the group. In April 2008 WFMT radio host Carl Grapentine was the guest narrator for Aaron Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait. In December 2007 University Band played the world premiere performance of Beneath Night’s Shadow by Reber Clark, dedicated to the memory of University Band French horn player Jerry Egan, who had passed away in 2005. This work was co-commissioned by the Concordia University Band and Elmhurst College. These are just a few of the many unique opportunities that University Band members get to experience while playing in this ensemble.

HISTORY OF THE CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY BAND

Compiled by Jennifer Nelson Sept. 2009

THE FIRST SEASON 1993-1994

The Concordia University Band was originally formed by Dr. Richard Fischer with the intent of playing a few pieces at the Spring Music Festival on April 24, 1994. It was made up of members of Wind Symphony, students at Concordia who were not in Wind Symphony, Concordia Alumni, and members of the community at large. There were no auditions for this group, and Dr. Fischer really had no idea of what level the players from the community or non-Wind Symphony members would be. The first rehearsal of the Concordia University Band was on December 2, 1993.  There was another rehearsal the following week on Dec. 9. Rehearsals resumed January 6, 1994. After the first few rehearsals, Dr. Fischer decided this group was good enough to do an entire independent concert. The first University Band (also known as U-Band) concert was on April 15, 1994 and was held in Geiseman Auditorium, also known as the South Gym. Three members of the flute section, Lisa Lorenz, Wendy Trier, and Lisa Steele were featured soloists in the Concertino for Flute and Band by Andre Waignein. U-Band also performed at the Spring Music Festival on April 24, 1994. Only a few current (2009) University Band members were present for this concert: Jennifer (Gohl) Nelson flute/piccolo, Kathy Fischer clarinet and Louise Olivo-Kier tuba (in later concerts primarily oboe). Kathy Fischer played the two concerts the first season, but then did not return to play with U-Band regularly until June 2001.

THE SECOND SEASON 1994-1995

In late August 1994, Dr. Fischer held auditions for U-Band for the first time. Rehearsals resumed on September 8, 1994. At this time, another group, the UNIVERSITY CHORUS, conducted by Kurt Amolsch, was formed, made up of Concordia students who were not able to be in Kapelle, but who wanted to sing. The concerts were moved to The Chapel of Our Lord/ Clara and Spencer Werner Auditorium, more commonly known as The Chapel. In most cases, and the first half of the concert would be the University Chorus and the second half would be the University Band. In the second season, there were concerts on December 11, 1994 and March 31, 1995. U-Band also played for the Spring Music Festival April 23, 1995. Current (2009) U-Band members Kristin Aasmundstad-Walsh clarinet, Paul Gruenwald trumpet, and Dick Snyder trumpet joined this season.

THE THIRD SEASON 1995-1996

In the third season, there were concerts of University Chorus and University Band on December 10, 1995 and March 22, 1996. At the March 7 rehearsal, University Band had the special treat of having composer Mark Camphouse guest conduct his composition Tribute. He was in town for the performance of another of his compositions, Watchman, Tell Us of the Night, which the Wind Symphony performed at their home concert the next night. At the March 22 concert, U-Band combined with University Chorus on the McBeth Of Sailors and Whales. U-Band also performed at Spring Music Festival on April 21, 1996. For the first time, U-Band extended the season into summer, playing the first outdoor concert titled American Music in front of Addison Hall on June 27, 1996. This concert was the second time for U-Band to play a concert without another group also on the program. In this season, two sixth grade girls, Gina Guhl clarinet, and Gina Knight, joined U-Band. Both girls were exceptionally talented and would later go on to professional music careers. By the end of the season, Gina Guhl’s talented fifth grade sister Jenny also joined U-Band on clarinet. In later years, high school would be the minimum age admitted to U-Band. Current (2009) U-Band members Christina Lass Moore flute, Ellen Waterman flute (soon switched to bassoon), David Reed flute, and Robert Hartney clarinet, joined U-Band this season.

THE FOURTH SEASON 1996-1997

The University Band added another concert independent of the University Chorus to the fourth season. University Band performed a concert for Concordia’s Homecoming weekend on October 12, 1996. The concert was titled Pillars Under the Stars, and as the name implied, was held outdoors in front of Addison Hall, affectionately known as “The Pillars” by Concordia students and alumni. University Band charter member Bruce Nelson was the featured soloist, performing the Rhapsody for Euphonium by James Curnow. Planning an evening outdoor concert in October may have been risky, but the weather cooperated for this event and it was a beautiful fall evening, although the cool temperatures did cause condensation issues with instruments. In the fourth season there were also University Chorus/University Band concerts on December 13, 1996 and April 4, 1997, and U-Band also played for Spring Music Festival. U-Band played another outdoor concert in front of the Pillars on June 27, 1997. This concert was also entirely U-Band.

THE FIFTH SEASON 1997-1998

In the fifth season, U-Band also performed the Homecoming concert outdoors in front of the Pillars on October 18, 1997. Unlike the previous year, the weather was not as conducive to outdoor playing. It was very cold at this concert. On December 12, 1997 and March 27, 1998, U-Band again performed combined concerts with University Chorus. Beginning this season, University Chorus was conducted by Willard Thomen. At the March 27 concert, University Band member Dennis Smith was the featured soloist, performing Spotlights for Bass Clarinet by Jan Hadermann. This concert was also the first University Band concert to be recorded on CD. Prior to this, indoor concerts had been recorded on cassette. Outdoor concerts were usually not recorded. University Band played for Spring Music Festival April 26, 1998, but did not combine with Wind Symphony at the end of the concert. U-Band again played a concert alone June 26, 1998. This was also outdoors in front of the Pillars. This time the weather was nice.

THE SIXTH SEASON 1998-1999

Once again in the sixth season, University Band played a concert for Homecoming weekend on October 24, 1998. However, because of the bad experience the previous year with the weather at this concert, this time it was moved indoors to Geiseman Auditorium (South Gym). Again, University Band and Chorus played joint concerts December 11, 1998 and April 9, 1999. On June 27, 1999, U-Band played a concert outside in front of the Pillars. It rained most of the day and even during the set-up, but the weather cleared up by the concert. In the summer of 1999 there was an additional summer concert on July 31 titled The Sounds Of Chicago. This concert was sponsored by Lutheran Brotherhood Greater Chicago Agency.

THE SEVENTH SEASON 1999-2000

On October 2, 1999, U-Band performed another Homecoming concert, this time in the chapel. The title of this concert was Marching Around the World from A to Z. Professor Jean Harrison led the audience on a musical tour around the world as she announced interesting facts about the pieces depicting different parts of the world, as well as composers from many countries. Cliff Johnson was the guest bass soloist for Ol’ Man River. The December 10, 1999 and March 31, 2000 concerts were again the combined efforts of University Chorus and University Band. The March 31 concert featured Bruce Nelson playing euphonium in the Willson Suite by Robert W. Smith. Cliff Johnson also returned as bass soloist for The Road to Mandalay and an encore of Ol’ Man River. Also, Greg Rohlfing, Brian Becker, and Paul Gruenwald were featured on trumpets for Bugler’s Holiday by Leroy Anderson. The 2000 summer season featured an unprecedented number of concerts, with performances on June 24 (A Celebration of American Music), July 22 (In The Good Old Summertime), and an extra concert on July 29, 2000. At this concert, University Band was called upon to “flesh out” the Concordia Band and Chorus Alumni Reunion Concert held as part of the Concordia Alumni Reunion festivities. The concert consisted of much of the same pieces as July 22 with some additional repertoire. The summer concerts also featured several soloists. At the June 24 concert, Beth Spilker and Gina Knight were featured on xylophone, performing Serenade for a Picket Fence by Norman Leyden. On July 22 and 29 Kirk Garrison was the guest trumpet soloist for Carnival of Venice by Jean Baptiste Arban.

THE EIGHTH SEASON 2000-2001

On August 31, September 8, 2000 selected members of U-Band, Wind Symphony, and Concordia’s music faculty attended rehearsals for a special reading band to play new band literature for area band directors to hear to promote the pieces. On September 9, 2000 the reading band performed. Frank Ticheli was the featured composer and was present to conduct his own works. In spite of the attraction of a big name composer, the audience was disappointingly small, and was mostly grade school and middle school conductors, so the pieces performed were more difficult than what their schools could perform. In the 2000-2001 school year, Dr. Fischer was on sabbatical and did not conduct University Band. Jonathan Walsh conducted the band for the next three concerts on September 30, 2000, December 8, 2000 and March 32, 2001. The December concert was the last joint concert of the University Chorus and the University Band. The University Chorus was disbanded after this. Dr. Fischer returned to conduct the June 30, 2001 concert. Greg Rohlfing, Matt Wolf, and Brian Becker were the featured trumpets for Bugler’s Holiday at the June concert.

THE NINTH SEASON 2001-2002

Beginning with the ninth season of University Band, all concerts were entirely by the band. On September 7, 2001 the second annual Reading Band held a rehearsal. Once again, this was a group made up of a combination of selected U-Band, Wind Symphony, and Concordia faculty members. Based on the needs of the previous year’s audience, this session focused on easier music. James Curnow was the featured composer this time. The session was held on September 8, 2001. Again, turnout was low, and as a result, the Reading Band event was not repeated. Because University Chorus no longer shared the December concert with the University Band, in order to have time to prepare to play the entire December concert alone, there was no fall concert this season. Jennifer Nelson was the featured soloist on Elegy for English Horn by Jack Stamp. The concert was the first to feature a composition by a member of the University Band, David Jander, on Baby’s First Christmas. This concert was also the first in which Jean Harrison Bojes’ commentary became a regular feature of all concerts. She began giving commentaries in the late ‘90’s for outdoor concerts, primarily because there were no printed programs at those events. Her thoughtful insights to the pieces became such a hit with the audience that many were asking why she was not doing the indoor ones too, and so she became a regular feature. There was a concert March 22, 2002. The Patriotic Concert on June 29, 2002 had to be moved into the chapel at the last minute due to excessive heat. Susan Kraut was the guest soprano, singing “I’ve Made My Plans for the Summer” by John Philip Sousa.
