Notes
Notes on the Atom
You may know most, if not, all of this stuff
![Page 10: History of the Atom. Opener Copy question and answers What are the building blocks of all matter A. Mass B. Molecules C. Atoms D. Pure Substances.](https://reader031.fdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022012919/5a4d1b527f8b9ab0599a7e84/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
First off, what is an atom?
Atoms are the smallest parts to which an element can be divided yet still be that element.
Atoms are the building blocks of all matter.
![Page 11: History of the Atom. Opener Copy question and answers What are the building blocks of all matter A. Mass B. Molecules C. Atoms D. Pure Substances.](https://reader031.fdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022012919/5a4d1b527f8b9ab0599a7e84/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
How small is an atom?
An atom is so small that a penny contains about 2 x 1022 or 20,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms!!!
![Page 12: History of the Atom. Opener Copy question and answers What are the building blocks of all matter A. Mass B. Molecules C. Atoms D. Pure Substances.](https://reader031.fdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022012919/5a4d1b527f8b9ab0599a7e84/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
But there’s more…
Atoms consist of even smaller particles. These include:– Protons– Neutrons– Electrons
![Page 13: History of the Atom. Opener Copy question and answers What are the building blocks of all matter A. Mass B. Molecules C. Atoms D. Pure Substances.](https://reader031.fdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022012919/5a4d1b527f8b9ab0599a7e84/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Parts of an Atom
The protons and neutrons make up the center or nucleus.
![Page 14: History of the Atom. Opener Copy question and answers What are the building blocks of all matter A. Mass B. Molecules C. Atoms D. Pure Substances.](https://reader031.fdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022012919/5a4d1b527f8b9ab0599a7e84/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
The Nucleus
The center of an atomSmall, dense (packed tightly)Contains protons and neutrons:
most of the atom’s massSo dense, if it were the size of a
grape, it would weigh over 9 million tons!
![Page 15: History of the Atom. Opener Copy question and answers What are the building blocks of all matter A. Mass B. Molecules C. Atoms D. Pure Substances.](https://reader031.fdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022012919/5a4d1b527f8b9ab0599a7e84/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Protons
Located in the nucleus
Positive charge (+)Mass of 1 atomic
mass unit (amu)
protons = positive
![Page 16: History of the Atom. Opener Copy question and answers What are the building blocks of all matter A. Mass B. Molecules C. Atoms D. Pure Substances.](https://reader031.fdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022012919/5a4d1b527f8b9ab0599a7e84/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Neutrons
Located in the nucleus
Have no charge - neutral
Mass of 1 amu
neutrons = neutral
![Page 17: History of the Atom. Opener Copy question and answers What are the building blocks of all matter A. Mass B. Molecules C. Atoms D. Pure Substances.](https://reader031.fdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022012919/5a4d1b527f8b9ab0599a7e84/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Electrons
Found outside of the nucleus in electron clouds – (think of rings around a target)
Negatively charged (-)Mass of almost zeroNumber of electrons equals the numbers
of protons to cancel out the charges – (think of -1+1=0) electrons = negative
![Page 18: History of the Atom. Opener Copy question and answers What are the building blocks of all matter A. Mass B. Molecules C. Atoms D. Pure Substances.](https://reader031.fdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022012919/5a4d1b527f8b9ab0599a7e84/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)

Protons = Electrons
Protons + Neutrons = Mass number– Mass number – Protons = Neutrons– Mass number – Neutrons = Protons
