Why did people use these instruments to make music?

Songs were a way to pass on stories and history.

Around 2000 years ago, something happened that caused music to become more important.

Organized Christian Religion due to the birth of Jesus.

Music became a part of European religious ceremonies. The church leaders wanted people all over to be able to sing the same songs and have them sound the same, so a system of musical notation was devised.

In groups of 4-6, use the supplied instruments to create a small song.

Use chart paper to devise a way of

recording what you play so someone

else could play your song.

Besides hearing music in church, the rich would pay minstrels to sing for them. The minstrel's songs were very repetitive which helped them remember the long verses that often told stories. Being repetitive made them easier to dance to as well. Sacred (church) music and secular (non church) music often used the same melodies as the idea of someone owning music had not happened yet. Unlike today and the law suits that happen.

By the 1300's, instruments had become more complex and people would write either secular or sacred music that could be played by a number of people with different instruments at the same time. These people were called composers, as they composed music.Guillaume de Machaut was one of the earliest composers. He was born in France in 1300 and died in 1377.

The Renaissance: 1450 - 1600

Renaissance means Rebirth. During this time period, the arts were reborn. Previously, art and music were mostly used to honour God or the King. People were now starting to recognize human achievements and the world around them. This shift in thought allowed for science to make great advancements. Secular music became more expressive. Music could now be printed and shared. Singing and music became a form of entertainment for many.

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina

He was born around 1525 in Italy.By 20 he was an organist and choirmaster in a Catholic church. His career focused on composing music for the church. His music was simple so that you could pay attention to the words sung by the singers.

Here is a sample of his work.

The Baroque period: 1600 - 1750

During the Baroque period music was full of elaborate detail. Music was now being created that was for instruments and not voice. Music was composed that showed the contrastbetween different instruments. Ballets and operas were being performed. Many of thesecomposers are still know today and their music is still played.

Johann Sebastian BachBorn in Germany in 1685 he was surrounded by a family of musicians. He was very religious and composed music for the church. He liked his music to be simple and repetitive and developed a form know as the Fugue. In the fugue, the same sequence of music is played over and over again with subtle changes in tone, speed, and volume. Listen to this and see if you can hear the repeating pattern.

A sample of a fugue.

The Classical Period: 1750-1827

Orchestra's were needed to play the type of music now being composed. Balance in the music was important. Names like Mozart and Beethoven are examples from this time period. You have probably heard some of their music.

Flight of the Bumble Bee

Ode to Joy

Romantic Period: 1827-1900

Tradition and individuality were both important. Although they often conflicted. Music was characterized by a single melody with harmony. Composers were no longer bound to expected ways of putting instruments and voice together so new combinations of sounds were invented.

The Early 1900's - Swing with the Big Bands

The war was over. People were happy. People wanted lively music. Orchestra's started to play music that people could dance to. The Big Band sound was born. These Big Bands developed style of music called swing, which was very popular in the 1930's, especially when records became popular so people could listen the music they liked in their own home when ever they wanted, instead of having to go to a concert or listen to live music played on the radio. The advent of the record also helped increase the popularity of radio stations, as favourite music could be played over and over without having to bring the musicians into the radio station. The Big Bands were know by their conductors such as Tommy Dorsey or Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. Ask your grandparents about any of these band leaders. As you listen to some of these songs, compare to the music you had heard before.

In your classrooms, create 1-4 groups. Use your instruments to create an orchestra and prepare a song to play for everyone. Consider, volume, notes that sound good together, instruments that sound good together (you don't all have to play at the same time) speed. Try to create a mood with your music.Meet back in the library at 2:40 to perform.

ROOTS OF ROCK N' ROLL

"The heart of Rock n' Roll is the beat"Huey Lewis

The early roots of Rock n' Roll can be traced back to Africa. Music with a hard driving rhythm played an important part of daily tribal life. Songs were used during work and for entertainment. Songs also kept a kind of vocal history written in books. When slaves were taken to America in the 1600s, they brought their music with them. African music supplies the rhythm or beat, which eventually developed into Rock n' Roll.

When the African people were brought to North America in the 1600's, they were broughtas slaves. Families were separated, parents never to see their children again. Slaves weresold to wealther land owners to work on theirplantations. If they tried to escape, they were hunted down and usually killed. They did not have an easy life. If they had children while working they farm, the land owner could take the children away and sell them. Their songs helped them pass the time working in the fields and often told of their hardships.

THE BLUES

"The Blues ain't nothin but an achin' broken heart's disease." Robert Johnson

Slavery ended in 1865 but newly freed Blacks continued lead hard lives as share croppers. This newfound sense of isolation and hardship was the basis of the blues.

The first blues singers wandered around the South with guitars singing about their lives and hardships. The musical form used in Blues was called Twelve BarBlues. This style combined European structure with African rhythm and vocal techniques. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s Black musicians such as Robert Johnson sang the blues in roadhouses and juke joints.

Characteristics of Blues are:1) Slow and sad music2) Instruments are guitar (often with a slide), harmonica3) Lyrics are very simple and repetitive (Twelve bar Blues)

TWELVE BAR BLUES

The Twelve Bar Blues is a common chord progression or pattern found in many types of Rock N' Roll. The simple and repetitive nature of the Twelve Bar Blues makes it easy to play and sing.

Long ago, in the heart of Africa, a great hunter was born to the Watutzi tribe. He was called Zaboway, which means "ghost in the jungle". As he grew, he became strong and fast and skilled with a bow and spear. On his 16th birthday, he was sent into the jungle to make his first solo kill and move from boyhood into manhood. He left the tribe, and walked into the deep underbrush of the jungle. The leaves were so thick, that the noise was deadened, and the animals seeing this great hunter, hid in fear. Zaboway did not want to kill a small animal as his first prey, he was after a prize, the mighty tiger, Kahula. As he walked deeper into the jungle, it started to rain, a slow steady mist that cooled his hot body in the midday heat. The further he went into the jungle, the more the rain beat down, many drops hitting the broad leaves of the low folliage. Still he continued on, and the rains became torential, and thunder sounded. He thought he may have to give up his hunt as the animals had all taken shelter from storm. As he was about to turn around and head back to his tribe, he spotted a familliar shape, up in the crook of a tree, sheltering from the weather. He yelled up at the animal. Kahula, do not be a coward, come and face me. The giant tiger stood in the fork of the tree, and with one mighty leap, landed on the jungle floor, not 10 meters from where Zaboway was standing. Knowing he did not have time to grab his bow and notch an arrow, with Kahula being so close, he picked up his spear. Kahula looked at him and growled. "What are you going to do with that, little child? Go back and let your mother look after you, or I will use it as a toothpick to clean your bones from between my teeth after I devour you." But Zaboway was not afraid, he yelled back at Kahula, "I am the greatest hunter that has ever lived, I am not afraid of you or anything else in this jungle." At that moment Kahula charge Zaboway and leapt into the air. Zaboway, having no protection in the open glade, turned and ran. Zaboway was fast, but so was Kahula. The chase continued for many minutes, with neither of them tiring. Finally Kahula chased Zaboway into a dead end canyon. Kahula figured he had Zaboway trapped and he would be an easy dinner. But as he pounced, Zaboway anchored his spear in the ground, with the sharp tip pointing up, and Kahula impaled himself upon the weapon. Zaboway, cut off Kahula's head, and wore it as a crown as he went back to his tribe amid cheers and admiration. Zaboway became the greatest hunter the Watutzi tribe had ever seen.

American Folk Music A third popular style of the late 1800's and early 1900's was Folk Music. The common folk who lived in the country and worked on farms had their own brand of music. It was not sophisticated like orchestra music. It was common music about the common things people encountered in life and their work. The songs told stories and passed on history about local people and events. As this music spread west, it developed into Country and Western. It's combination of instruments, guitars, bass, slide guitar, fiddle, drums and others were smaller than an orchestra and needed less people to play.

Woody GuthrieWoody Guthrie is one of the more famous American folk artists of the early 1900s. His song 1913 Massacre tells the story of a tragic event. The song revolves around a tragedy that took place on December 24, 1913, in Calumet's Italian Hall. Over five hundred striking miners and their families had gathered at the Hall for a Christmas party that night. The hall could only be accessed by a steep stairway; along with a poorly-marked fire escape which could only be reached by climbing out of the windows, the stairway was the only available exit.During the course of the party, somebody shouted "fire!", although there was no fire. However, people began to panic en masse, and rushed towards the stairway. While trying to all make their way down stairs, seventy-three people were trampled to death, fifty-nine of which were children.

Country music started in the early 1900's as cowboy music. "When the Work's All Done This Fall", is considered the first cowboy song to be recorded by a major artist. Jimmie Rodgers, is known as the "Father of Country Music". He is credited with the first million-selling single, “Blue Yodel #1,” and his catalog of songs, all recorded between 1927 and 1933, established him as the first preeminent voice in country music. Henry Ford, the auto maker, put more money into promoting country music in the 1920s than anyone else. Ford was frightened by what he saw as the urban decadence of couples jazz dancing. In response he organized fiddling contests and promoted square dances across the country to encourage what he saw as the older, more wholesome forms of entertainment.

THE FIFTIESBIRTH OF ROCK N' ROLL

The Blues had a baby and they called it Rock n' roll

Chuck Berry

Rhythm and Blues

The fifties began with rhythm and Blues which was music played by, and listened to by Black Americans. Rhythm and Blues used the twelve bar blues chord progression but had an electric sound. It was also fast, cheerful and easy to dance to which made it different from the slow, sad blues. Fats Domino and Chuck Berry made Rhythm and Blues records but they were listened to mainly by Black Americans. These records did not receive wide air-play until Buddy Holly and the Crickets started to make inroads into white listening audiences.

Alan FreedIn 1955, a white disc jockey named Alan Freed introduced Rhythm and Blues to the large white radio audience in Cincinnati. he changed the name from Rhythm and blues to Rock N' Roll. Record sales boomed with young people and Billy Hailey's "Rock Around the Clock" was the first giant hit. Later, Freed was disgraced for taking bribes to play certain records on his radio show. This scandal which became known as Payola shook the recording industry and ruined Freed's disc-jockey career.

ElvisAlso in 1955, a man named Sam Phillips discovered Elvis. Elvis was a 'white boy who sang black music". Even though many parents claimed Rock N' Roll was an evil influence on youth, Elvis was an instant success, especially with teenagers. His good looks and gyrating hips vaulted Rock N' Roll into every household in America. Elvis had become the first Rock superstar with remakes of old rhythm and blues songs.

THE BEATLES & THE ENGLISH INVASION

In the sixties, British rock groups such as the Beatles and The Rolling Stones began to re-make old rhythm and blues songs (cover versions) using more amplification. The Beatles became the first super group and had a very large impact on rock music. However, The Beatles had an even larger impact on young people and society in general. A fad towards long hair started a "rebellion" against the ways of the older generation. This idea of using music to express frustration with the ways of the older generation can still be seen today.
