History of laughter yogan March 1995, Dr. Madan Kataria was writing an article Laughter - The Best Medicinefor a health journal. In his research, he discovered many modern scientific studies, thatdescribed in depth, the many proven benefits of Laughter on the Human mind and body.In particular, Dr. Kataria was impressed by Norman Cousins' book Anatomy of an

Illness and the research work by Dr. Lee Berk. Profoundly inspired and being a man ofaction, Dr. Kataria immediately decided to field-test the impact of laughter on himselfand others.Starting with just a handful of (5) persons, at 7 am on March 13, 1995, at a public park inhis neighborhood in Mumbai, India; and managed to persuade four people to support himin launching a Laughter Club. They laughed together in the park that day to theamusement of bystanders; and the small group quickly grew to more than 50 participants, within a few days. In the initial meetings, they stood in a circle with one person in thecenter, to tell a joke or a funny story. Everybody enjoyed and felt good for the rest of theday. After two weeks, the Laughter Club hit a snag. The stock of good jokes and stories ran

out, and negative, hurtful and naughty jokes started to emerge. Two offended participantscomplained that it would be better to discontinue the Club than to continue with suchjokes. Dr. Kataria asked the Club members to give him just one day to develop abreakthrough that would resolve the crisis. That night, Dr. Kataria reviewed his research and finally found the answer he waslooking for: Our body cannot differentiate between pretend and genuine laughter. Bothproduced the same Happy Chemistry. The next morning he explained this to the group, and asked them to try to act out laughter with him, for one minute. Amid skepticism theyagreed to try. The results were amazing. For some, the pretend laughter quickly turnedinto real laughter - this was contagious and in no time others followed. Soon the groupwas laughing like never before. The hearty laughter that followed persisted for almost ten

minutes. This breakthrough was the birth of Laughter Yoga.Realizing that there are ways other than humor to stimulate laughter, Dr. Katariadeveloped a range of Laughter Exercises including elements of role-play and othertechniques from his days as an amateur theater actor. Giving a thought to the importanceof childlike playfulness, he developed further techniques to stimulate this within thegroup. As Yoga practitioners, Dr. Kataria and his wife Madhuri, Co-Founder of Laughter Yoga, saw the similarities between Laughter and Pranayama exercises, and incorporatedelements from this ancient form of Yoga into Laughter Yoga, including the deepbreathing exercises now used between Laughter Exercises, to deepen the impact. The result - Laughter Yoga: A blend of Yogic Deep Breathing, Stretching, and LaughterExercises that cultivate child-like playfulness.

    What People Say

Initially, I was very skeptical about the Laughter Yoga course. I attended thecourse because my friend, Doreen (a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader graduated in Sept2008 under Teacher Lee-Jean) strongly recommended this program & I just obliged her. Iused to rely on sleeping pill to sleep. After this 2-Day program, I no longer require thesleeping pill and there was no disruption in my sleep. I felt light hearted. I wish to spreadLaughter Yoga to my friends. It is simply so easy. You can do it anywhere, in the office,in the car or on your beautiful bed. I have started practicing it daily. It has changed myoutlook in life. To all human beings, go for it!!!Hohohohahahahehehe..Josephine Tan Sioh Hoon

LY- is it a gimmick? I know for sure it lifts up my spirits in the morning, it is difficultto feel great about anything especially if you are still feeling sleepy. But after a shortsession, I feel recharged and lighter. Is it crazywell, who cares? The bystanders missbeing crazy cos they feel out of place. If you feel good after feeling crazy, by all meansgo ahead. If it makes you feel high, a legitimate kind of high, well you have benefitted! Itis not a gimmick..it is good for you. --- Teresa Yeo

If we are happy, we are in a better position to be of benefit to others. Joining sessions inLaughter Yoga, we can be happy for no reason and experience spontaneous joy everyday. My insurance sales increases too as I'm a 'happy' carrier and people can sense it andfeel good. Just come and laugh and enjoy the results. .......Best Regards ........Esther

If I am alone inthe car I will chant loudly, afterall my windows are closed and nobody outside knowswhat I am doing! I feel great after that! I too realised that my sinus and throat problems

The laughter exercises actually helps in the release of more 'stale' air fromour body system during exhalation, hence, making room for more fresh oxygen intake toour brains, body and system during yoga breathing. So, after a laughter and yogabreathing session of 30 mins, practically I feel my whole body is stretched, stimulatedand exercised.....I feel good and 'light'.

http://www.laughteryoga.com.my/laughter-yoga/testimonials.htmlWhat is laughter yogaLaughter Yoga is a unique exercise routine which is fast sweeping the world and is acomplete wellbeing workout. It is the brainchild of Dr. Madan Kataria, an Indianphysician from Mumbai who started the first laughter club in a park on 13th March 1995,with just 5 people. Today, it has become a worldwide phenomenon with more than 6000social laughter clubs in 65 countries.

Laughter Yoga combines unconditional laughter with yogic breathing(Pranayama).Anyone can laugh for no reason, without relying on humor, jokes orcomedy. Laughter is simulated as a body exercise in a group but with eye contact and

childlike playfulness, it soon turns into real and contagious laughter.

The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on a scientific fact that the body cannotdifferentiate between fake and real laughter. One gets the same physiological andpsychological benefits.

Laughter clubswere also featured on Oprah Winfrey Show, BBC, CNN, ZDF (Germany) NHK (Japan),ABC news (USA) and many other TV networks in the world.

Why Laughter Yoga - 3 Reasons:

    1. In order to get the scientifically proven health benefits of laughter, we need to laughcontinuously for at least for 10 to 15 minutes. Since in Laughter Yoga we do laughter asan exercise, we can prolong our laughter as long as we want. On the other hand, naturallaughter comes for just a few seconds here and there and is not enough to bring aboutphysiological and biochemical changes in our body.

    2. To reap the health benefits of laughter, laughter has to be loud and deep coming fromthe diaphragm. It should be a belly laugh. It might not be socially acceptable to laughloudly, but Laughter Yoga clubs provide a safe environment where one can laugh loudlyand heartily without any social implication.

    3. Natural laughter that courses through our life depends upon many reasons andconditions, but there are not many reasons which make us laugh. That means we areleaving laughter to chance, it may happen it may not. In contrast, in Laughter Yoga club

I had a two full day class during the weekendsfor the certified Wellness Planner program atUniversity Malaya campus. After half day ofanatomy and physiology, free radicals andother health topics.we all needed anenergizer!! Oh Yes, Laughter Yoga!!HOHOHAHAHAAs a matter of fact, human brain cannotconcentrate for more than 90 minutes afterwhich the attention span reduces. Laughter

Yoga session provides a great energy boostduring long workshop sessions and conferences, even just a short session of 5-10minutes. By flooding the brain with oxygen, raising dopamine levels, (which are crucialto concentration) and relieving stress, laughter exercise naturally jump starts the brain. Ithelps to increase the attention span, enhance learning skills, concentration powers andpotential. Therefore, if you've been stuck at your desk all day or feel like or feel like youve got afuzzy brain, just stand up and get some laughter exercise. This simple act tells your brainits' time to be awake! HOHOHAHAHA.
