Isle Of Wight Radio

The Isle of Wight radio first began transmitting on the 15th of April 1990, from Briddlesford farm. At this point they were only transmitting through AM and switched to FM in March 1998. It’s main transmitter is now at Chillerton Down.

Isle of Wight Radio was independently-owned for two years before being purchased by GWR (now Global Radio) and then by The Local Radio Company. After being owned by The Local Radio Company, the station was controlled through a joint venture between TLRC and the Portsmouth FC, under the name of Quadrant Media Limited. The joint venture also owned Spirit FM in Chichester and 107.4 The Quay in Portsmouth. In August 2009, the station was sold in a management buyout by programme controller Paul Topping, Claire Willis, Ian Walker and Hedley Finn MBE making it independently owned again.

Andrew David – Managing Editor

or                                                  I’ve been in BBC radio for ages – ever since 1972 when even Terry Wogan was a young man –

I used to work on providing music for his Radio 2 show. Since then I’ve worked at BBC Radios Nottingham, Kent and Lincoln and been the front man on TV – East Midlands and Midlands TODAY.I’ve been looking after the radio station, Siren FM, since before the studios existed and I can honestly say it’s the best job I’ve ever had, working with a fabulous team of dedicated and exhaustively hard working volunteers.Long may it continue!

Vectis radio

Vectis Radio was launched on the 23rd of January 2010, by Ian Mac, who previously worked at Isle Of Wight Radio for 15 years.

He had a vision for creating a ‘Community Internet Radio Station that works within the community promoting events for charities, schools, advertises local companies at very affordable prices, help the unemployed get back into work and give the community the chance of doing their own shows on a regular basis regardless of age or ability.’

The station includes many old school music shows and chat shows. Which are hosted by volunteers. There is also many opportunities for members of the public to become involved and create their very own Vectis island disk.
