It all started in late 1970s, Chicago, IL and New York.Created by the African American community, House music developed from traditional music such as soul,

jazz, gospel and blues.Spiritually and aesthetically, it developed in the U.S. out

of the need of oppressed people, African Americans, gays and Latinos, to build a community through dance.

It eventually made its way to the UK in the late eighties via Ibiza, where it was embraced and adapted by the

youth and turned into Acid House.

Influential Clubs• Paradise Garage, NY

1977-1987Resident DJ Larry Levan boomed 'garage’ music from the speakers and

globalised a new wave of digital music.

• The Warehouse, IL1977-1982

Lured from NY, DJ Frankie Knuckles

brought his progressive tracks to Chicago

• Hacienda, Manchester1982-1997

For over 15 years, it guided the U.K. house

scene from garage raves to acid house, leaving a

legacy.

• Amnesia, Ibiza1976-Present

Been around since Disco, Amnesias desire was to mix pop, hip hop

and funk and label it ‘Balearic’-style house.

Influential Names• Frankie Knuckles

1970-2014Achieving success in NY ‘loft’ parties and clubs, moving to Chicago he

became resident DJ at The Warehouse where he

innovated house music.

• Larry Levan1970-1992

Starting from the shadow of Knuckles, Levan

flourished at the Garage. Blending house, soul and

disco

• Paul Oakenfold1979-Present

Started off as a journalist sneaking in to Studio 54. Found himself in Ibiza on his birthday wowed by

Balearic house. In 1988 he was a jack of all trades.

• Jungle Brothers1987-Present

Earliest mergers of rap and house music and had a

long-ranging impact in hip-hop in the 90’s and 2000’s creating a bridge between

genres.
