The 1st Buddhist Council was being held immediately after the death of Buddha

Many Scholars believe it was held around 400 BC

The 3rd Buddhist Council was held in 251 BCE In the Popular Beliefs, 3rd Buddhist Council

was convened by the Mauryan King Ashoka The main objective was to purify the

Saṅgha, in particular from non-Buddhist ascetics who were highly attracted by the royal patronage

During this Council, Ashoka asked suspected Monks about Buddha’s Teachings
