MAJOR REQUIREMENTS OVERVIEW !Course Minimum: A minimum of 12 courses is required for the history major. !Lower Division Course Restriction: No more than four of the minimum 12 courses may be lower division (HIS 1 - 99). !Upper Division Requirement: The history major requires a minimum of 40 upper division units (eight upper division courses). !The Disciplinary Communication (DC) General Education Requirement is satisfied by completing an exit seminar (one quarter: 190 series, 194 series, or 196 series) or a thesis (two quarters: courses 195A and 195B) in your chosen region of concentration. !Transfer Courses: Up to three history courses completed at another college or university may be applied to the history major. Courses must appear on the UCSC Transfer Credit Report in order to receive major credit. Community college courses transfer to UCSC for lower division credit. !Course Substitution: With the approval of a history faculty member from your chosen region of concentration, you may substitute an upper division individual study or “related” courses for the history elective requirement. !Study Abroad: With the approval of the History Undergraduate Director, a maximum of three EAP courses may be applied to the major. !A minimum of five regularly scheduled history courses plus the comprehensive exit/DC requirement must be taken from members of the UCSC history faculty. !
