In 1882, people in Katayamazu finally succeeded in getting hot water source from the bottom of the lake and started the hot spring business. Aizenji temple was originally located in Kanazawa, but in the middle of Meiji era, the temple was transferred to its current place for guardianship over the hot spring. People have visited Aizenji and prayed for its continuous growth and prosperity of Katayamazu hot spring town.

Dr. Ukichiro Nakaya was well known for the first person in the world to make artificial snow. We publicly honor him for becoming a world-famous scientist. This museum was established in 1994 to honor his achievements in snow and ice.☎0761-75-3323 Admission ¥500; Hours: 9:00-17:00 Closed: Wednesday

Foot bath is a local people’s favorite place, and people gather around here. The hot spring water warms up your feet and core of your body. Being in the hot spring water for 10-15minutes, you will feel refreshed, calm, and peaceful. Admission free ; Hours: 5am-midnight daily

In 1653(Edo era), a local feudal lord found a

source of hot water on the bottom of

Shibayama Lagoon when he saw waterfowl

swarming on the water surface. He and many

people tried to get the source of the hot water

from the lagoon but failed to do so. In 1876

(Meiji era), one hector of the lagoon was

reclaimed by thirty thousand pine trees, and

people finally found a way to secure the hot

water source for the hot spring. The next year,

the first Hot Spring ryokan (Japanese-style

hotel) was opened. Since then, many people

have visited Katayamazu Onsen throughout

the years.

Katayamazu Onsen No.1 Attraction!

Until 1909, hotels in Katayamazu did not have spas as they do today, so people used “Soyu” (a public bathhouse). By bathing in and drinking Katayamazu’ s hot spring water emerging from the source of 75℃, people were able to recover from a variety of illnesses, such as neuralgia, stom-ach, intestinal diseases, and skin diseases.　☎0761-74-0550¥440(Adult)/¥130(6~12yrs)/¥50(3~6yrs); Hours: 6:00-22:00 daily

A public bathhouse “SOYU” 総湯

Shibayama Lagoon is a freshwater lake of which the perim-

eter is 6.5km. Before 1952, the lake was 3 times larger than it

is today, but to manage the postwar food shortage, two third

of the lake was reclaimed for a cultivated area, mainly for rice.

On fine weather, you will see a beautiful view of the sacred

mountain “Hakusan” (one of three Japanese biggest moun-

tains). Also, fireworks are launched every night from July to

August, for 30 minutes. In winter, you will see whistling swans

and ducks before they fly back to Siberia.
