HISTORYUnity is Strength
By the mid-1990 there were three
producer-owned wineries in Bonnievale.
Bonnievale Cellar, Merwespont and Nordale.
The leadership of the wineries discussed the
idea of amalgamation, realizing that
combined production capacity, expertise in
winemaking, marketing and industry buying
power will lead to a distinct competitive
advantage.
In 2006, the companies merged to form
Bonnievale Wines. Financier John Barnardt
was recruited from the banking industry to
lead the enlarged group.
The new Bonnievale Wines grew into one of
South largest wine producers whilst
increasing exports and share in the domestic,
bottled market with the Bonnievale Wines
ranges.
Building a Town
Bonnievale Wines is named after our quaint
town that was founded by the visionary
Scotsman, Christopher Forrest Rigg around
the turn of the 19th century. Rigg, with his
entrepreneurial spirit, bought a sizeable
track of land in the luscious valley and
began developing an irrigation canal to
ensure a reliable water supply to the
valley.
Rigg used most of his personal resources
and all of his persuasive ability to sell the
idea to like-minded pioneers who certainly
took his philosophy to heart. Through sheer
hard work and dedication the successful,
thriving town of Riggton was born.
Rigg later renamed the town Bonnievale
(Beautiful Valley) after his
residence in Scotland.
WINERIESBonnievale Wines has three modern cellar
facilities processing 25 000 28 000 tons
per season.
The three facilities enable Bonnievale Wines
to manage each of the grape and wine
classes independently. It allows the
winemakers to track and monitor the source
of the best wines back to the exact vineyard
where they were produced and continue to
work with the growers on improving even
further.
The owners of these vineyards are
encouraged to practice advanced grape
growing techniques, supported by a team of
top viticulturists to ensure that the cellar is
able to produce premium wines year after
year.
Over more than half a century Bonnievale
Wines has built up a sustainable grape supply
network from 100 grape producers. The fertile
land in the Bonnievale valley boasts a variety of
geology, geography and climate, creating a
varied terroir that is evident in the selection of
grapes produced here.
The area extends to within 100km from the
ocean and includes two rivers (the Breede and
Riviersonderend) and hills and mountains that
offer a variety of slopes and micro-climates.
The winemakers get to play with this rich
palate, picking and choosing from the treasure
chest of terroir potential.
With the strict policy of bottling the
Bonnievale Wines has managed to establish a
reputation for excellent consistent quality.

LOCATION
SOCIAL RESPONSILIBITY -ELETHUElethu is a successful 100% black-owned grape farming initiative
that benefits the workers at Bonnievale Wines. The project is
approaching a significant milestone as in May this year the equal
shareholding in the 30ha Elethu farm initiative comes to an end and
100% management is transferred to the Bonnievale Workers
Empowerment Trust. The trust recently declared a dividend for its 31
beneficiaries from the Elethu is 2017 harvest.
All the beneficiaries are Bonnievale Wines cellar or farm workers,
including the farm manager. The Trust owns the 32ha farm of which
16ha have been planted. The farm is operated in 50/50 collaboration
with a commercial farmer. When this agreement comes to an end in
May 2018, the Trust will take full responsibility for the farm
management, under the continued mentorship of the Bonnievale
Wines management team. An application has been submitted for
funding to plant a further 16ha of grapes next year. This will mainly
be Cabernet Sauvignon.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY -WIETA
WIETA is a not-for-profit, voluntary association of many differentstakeholders in the South African wine industry, who are committed to thepromotion of ethical trade in this sector. WIETA has a strategic partnershipwith farm worker organisations and labour unions working in the sector.
mission is to promote ethical trade in the agricultural sector by:• formulating and adopting a code of good practice governing employment
standards for those involved in the growing, production, packaging andbottling of agricultural products;
• promoting the adoption of and adherence to this code of good ethicalpractice among all producers and growers;
• educating producers and workers on the provisions of the WIETA code;• managing independent social audits to ensure that members of the
association observe and implement the code of good practice;• supporting and implementing development initiatives towards integrated
ethical trade planning and management in the sector; and• determining ways of encouraging implementation of ethical practice and
compliance with the code, and determining measures to be taken in thecase of non-compliance with the code.
Bonnievale completely buys into and adheres to the WIETAmission and code of conduct and as a result all Bonnievaleproducers as well as the cellar are WIETA accredited.
