HISTORICAL PREŠOV
The town of prešov• The first written note about the
developing town named Epuries is in the royal document from November 7th, 1247. On the request of the German settlers, King Ondrej III. Grantedthe town rights to Prešov in 1299.
• Prešov got the rights of a free royal town in 1347.
Historical Prešov• The medieval
development of the town is associated with guilds manufacturing and trade. The town was surrounded by the walls. The historical square of Prešov was declared an urban protected area in 1950.
Town Walls• Started in 1374 and
completed in the 30s of the 15th century.
• The best-preserved parts are the northeastern bastion called baker´s bastion and some parts of the walls in Kmeťovo stromoradie.
Florian Gate• At the end of the
Florian Street is the largest construction of the original town walls.
• It is decorated with the picture of St. Florian, the patron of fire-man, by Prešov painter Max Kurth.
Town Hall It was originally a
Gothic burgher´s house changed into a wine bar.
Its changes were connected with the big fires in 1786 and 1887.
It was enlarged into a two-floor building and it got its Pseudobaroque decoration after the latter fire.
Rákoczy Palace It was built of two
burgher´s houses by Žigmund Rákoczy at the end of the 16th century.
The building has a rich decorated attic facade.
At present, the Regional Museum uses the building.
Neptune´s Fountain It is the only
preserved tank of the former ten water tanks that supplied the town with water.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the leading Jewish tradesman Marek Holländer had the sculptural group of Neptun built as his thanks for the privilege.
The Black Eagle It was built of some
burgher´s houses that werw adjusted in town inn after 1561.
In 19th century, the new building of a concert hall and theatre was added to the complex.
It is luxorial place of social life in Prešov.
Country House It was built in years
1769-1770 as anadministrative building of the former Šariš County. The building has a rich Baroque-Classicistic decoration with two portals and a triangular gable- tympanon.
Caraffa´ s prison It was built in years
1504- 1509 as a warehouse and repository of the town measuring equipment and scales.
It is known as a prison, too
The building with fulcrum walls is a typical example of the Gothic architecture.
