A Brief description of historical events in Nicaragua.

My country has had many historical events, but the major historical event for me was the Sandinista Revolution in 1979.It was realized when all the sectors of the country, the countrymen, the workers, the businessmen, the students and the guerrillas, joined each other and finally they overthrew the SOMOSA dynasty and their National Guard. The Sandinista Revolution changed our way of life and the way we saw it. We had to learn how to unite and help each other, to overcome many problems and difficulties. The Revolution had the sympathy and solidarity of the whole world. This historical event ended the inhuman SOMOSA regime in Latin America. It also began another process of change in the Nicaraguan life. People lived in oppression and without freedom of speech, freedom of the press. All of the people lived in fear of the government and they didn’t have many opportunities, for example the needy people didn’t have access to education, or health care. There was a lot of illiteracy and the only people who had opportunities were the rich and powerful; because of these injustices the people lost their fear of reprisals and there were many insurrections, where many people preferred to die before following the unfair regime.

These kinds of things kept happening; many people died, other people were tortured and others lost their families because they fought for freedom.After the Sandinista Revolution, lead by Daniel Ortega Saavedra, a civil war began. A lot of young people died in this war. The country was destroyed, and the reprisals against people began again. This regime lasted from 1980 to 1990. During this period we didn’t have national elections and the war was a war without purpose. The government was forced to know that. In February 1990 we had national elections and the people punished the Daniel Ortega’s government with the popular vote. This election was the beginning of democracy in Nicaragua. For many people this election ended the Revolution, because the Sandinista government made a lot of mistakes in the 80’s, the people dismissed them. However there were a lot of good changes in education and health care and the rights of women and children

Each year, on the morning of July 19, thousands of people come together at the revolution plaza to commemorate this inspiring historical event.

Twenty eight years have past since the Sandinista revolution, and the people are changing day by day, but they keep in their hearts and their homes the valor and priorities that they learned in difficult times. Now my country is “an open house” for all the people of the world. Sex, color, religion and political ideology do not matter and all people are welcomed with open arms.
