hether you hail from New York, Norfolk, Newport News or (as I do) Williamsburg, Yorktown offers a delightful escape with history, one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants, a beach with riverwalk, fifes and drums, sailing

and Segway tours, concerts, a farmer’s market, festivals and more. A day trip is fun, but to fully experience all that Yorktown offers, plan to stay two or more nights, and immerse yourself in this historic riverfront town.

I start my tour at the Yorktown Victory Center at the northwest end of town on the Colonial Parkway. Heads up—you may see construction cones as workers complete a new American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, but the center and living history areas remain open. No matter how many times I visit, I have to spend time gazing at the rare broadside 1776 printing of the Declaration of Independence. I also enjoy reading about the colonists toppling the statue of King George III and converting it to lead cartridges for guns. Check out French General Lafayette’s pistols and a rare portrait of Lord Cornwallis.

You may not know: The bench with a seated statue of another George (that would be Washington) is a good photo op, perfect for your holiday card.

Then it’s off to Yorktown Battlefield where, in the museum, you can stand under General Washington’s tent. Standing under that tent where

Washington planned battles always gives me chills. You may not know that the earthworks here are unique in that they were first built by British soldiers defending Yorktown, repaired by French soldiers fighting with the Americans in the Revolutionary War, then built upon again by Confederates in the Civil War and then maintained by the Union Army.

I stop at the Yorktown National Cemetery, where soldiers who died at Yorktown are buried. Many of the graves are unmarked. I imagine worried mothers with no word from their sons. I stand for a minute on Surrender Road, envisioning the rows of British soldiers surrendering to the American and French forces on Oct. 19, 1781. That’s why Yorktown is famous, but there are plenty more reasons to enjoy a visit.

I check into the Duke of York Hotel, where my king room offers a balcony

with a stunning view of the York River. You may not know: although other area hotels have a Yorktown address, this landmark riverfront hotel is the only hotel in the historic village. Owners Paul and Becky Crockett tell me that several times a year, visitors arrive at the front desk thinking they have a reservation when they are in reality booked into a hotel miles away from the village and waterfront. The Crocketts tell me that one Richmond couple stayed at the Duke of York on their honeymoon in 1974 and now return regularly to the same room. I enjoy the five-sided pool, refurbished for the 2013 season. The grassy pavilion is perfect for sipping wine and watching the sunset.

In my room, I’m already halfway up Yorktown’s famous hill and partway to my next stop, the Carrot Tree in the Cole Digges House for a sampling of wine garden afternoon fare. The wine garden is open 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday during spring, summer and

fall, and guests can order wine, desserts and appetizers. The Carrot Tree is also a locals’ favorite for lunch daily and dinner on some nights. My favorites are the tomato basil soup, crab cake quiche and chocolate cake.

The house, built in 1720, is the oldest in Yorktown.

My next stop is Riverwalk Restaurant with a window front table with a view of the York River and a passing Navy destroyer heading for the Chesapeake Bay. Guitarist Robert Keys segues easily among tunes by Bach, James Taylor and Kansas. The signature crab cakes with corn on the cob are a big hit. The restaurant makes its own Green Goddess dressing.

Eco Tourism Itinerary

Morning: Leave your vehicle at the Riverwalk Landing parking garage. Or come via boat and dock at the award winning Virginia Clean Riverwalk Landing Pier. Then, start with Fair Trade Certified, organic and delicious coffee at Ben & Jerry’s/Green Mountain Coffee at Riverwalk Landing. Navigate Historic Yorktown via the free Yorktown trolley, which stops at nine locations. Rent a bicycle from Patriot Tours & Provisions and tour Historic Yorktown. Visit and tour the Yorktown Battlefield and Visitor Center. Your entrance fees will support conservation to parks and protected sites. Plan your visit to coincide with Yorktown’s Market Days and purchase Virginia locally grown products.

Afternoon: Make a picnic lunch and eat on the banks of the York River. Launch a canoe or kayak from Yorktown Beach, one of several parks, or from several York County boat landings and tour York County’s Blueways. Or go fishing with York River Charters. Visit Charles Brown Park and tour the Wetlands Interpretive Sanctuary for Education.

Evening: Dine overlooking the York River at the casual Water Street Grille with its outdoor courtyard. Take a sunset sail on the Schooner Alliance.

Overnight: Stay in one of York County’s official Green lodging properties—the York River Inn Bed and Breakfast in town or the nearby Staybridge Suites and TownPlace Suites.

The next morning, a beautiful sunrise and my bike from Patriot Tours and Provisions await me. The river sparkles, and I pass by a few early morning joggers, power walkers and what looks like a group of Navy or Coast Guard men out for a run. After a few passes on the flat ground along the water, I am ready—I think—to head up The Hill linking the waterfront to the historic village. I ride around the Yorktown National Battlefield, around the village, part of the way up the Colonial Parkway, past the Yorktown Victory Center and then back along the Riverwalk. You may not know: you can arrange to rent a bike and have it waiting before Patriot Tours and Provisions opens.

Then I’m off to Green Mountain Coffee/Ben & Jerry’s for a light breakfast. Tough choices face me including apple crumb muffins, chocolate muffins, blueberry muffins and more. I’m not a coffee drinker, but owner Bob D’Eramo talks me into trying

an espresso that’s good enough to make me reconsider. Green Mountain Coffee serves fair trade certified, pesticide free and organically grown products.

At lunch at the Beach Delly, a blackened grouper sandwich narrowly edges out Jamaican jerk chicken and a shrimp burger.

A relaxing cruise on the Schooner Alliance is next. Crewmembers engage two passengers to help, one on each line as they raise a sail. These macho men try to outdo one another until the crew reminds them this is a team effort, not a race. The rest of us enjoy the show and scenery. You may not know: you’re likely to see porpoises—the York River is salty enough for ocean life.

It’s on to supper at the River Room next door. Jimmy Krikales, former chef of the landmark Nick’s Seafood Pavilion, prepares well-remembered dishes from Nick’s and other specialties. On my plate, the Greek sampler platter and seafood shish kabob are big hits. Still hungry? Try the Baked Alaska.

The sound of classic rock beckons where the well-known regional band Slapwater plays as part of York County’s summer Shagging on the Riverwalk beach music Thursday night concert series. The crowd ranges from toddlers to seniors. Some sway and smile in lawn chairs while others dance on the lawn to

A drive on the Colonial parkway linking yorktown to Williamsburg and Jamestown is relaxing and rewarding. At the end of the parkway, check out the new exhibit, Jamestown’s Legacy to the American Revolution, with more than 60 objects on display.

a variety of crowd favorites such as the Commodores’ Brick House. You can buy food from local restaurants and set up on the lawn.

I enjoy one more sunrise along with breakfast at the Island Café. Whether you’re in the mood for pancakes or a seafood omelet, this is your destination for a scrumptious breakfast.

I make a quick stop to tour the York County Historical Museum on the lower level at York Hall where you can see artifacts from Native American tools to 20th century exhibits of the USS Yorktown

Then, I’m off to window shop, first in the historic village and then at the Riverwalk where a variety of stores offer one-of-a-kind antiques, quilts, fine gold jewelry, wine, kites and of course patriotic items. Here, I know I’m sure to find the perfect gift—for someone else or myself.

When I’m shopped out, I set up my lawn chair on the beach to read, watch the water and daydream about my next Yorktown sojourn. n
