My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

We are a people born of the Spirit! Just as in the beginning of creation the Spirit came as a “mighty wind” sweeping over the face of the earth, that same Spirit comes today to renew the face of the earth. Happy Pentecost, and happy birthday, people of God!

The Jewish feast of Pentecost called all devout Jews to Jerusalem to celebrate their birth as God’s Chosen People in the Covenant Law given to Moses at Sinai. The mysteries prefigured in that feast are fulfilled in the pouring out of the Spirit on Mary and the apostles today. We have a New Law and a New Covenant brought by Jesus not written on stone tablets but on our hearts. Everything is new as we witness in the Gospel the new Adam, Jesus, breathing new life into the apostles, our fathers in faith. The effects of the pride and arrogance displayed at the Tower of Babel have been reversed as all hear the Gospel in their native tongue. Truly, every nation and people are called to communion with God.

It was a glorious day and a wonderful time! This year’s picnic was heaven on earth! To go from Eucharist to a communion of relaxation and play with one another on such a beautiful day was glorious! A huge thanks to Nina Eshleman, Paul Sescilla and all who lent a helping hand to make this year’s event a huge success. Those with email addresses on file should have received pictures, compliments of Silvia Doe. Call in your email address if you want to be included.

Last Saturday night we celebrated milestone anniversaries of our married couples. To all who stood before us and proclaimed their vows, thank you. Thank you for inspiring us to love as we have been loved by God and by you, faithfully, fruitfully and unconditionally. A special thanks to our Family Life Coordinator, Joe Clupp, for arranging this year’s celebration.

Next weekend, our parish will bless and send forth 25 teens and adults as they journey to our Sister Parish, Sacred Heart Church on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota! We’re driving there… so keep us in your prayers! We see this as a spiritual pilgrimage with daily Mass, devotions and spiritual discussions that will take place on the road and while we are there. We also see this as an opportunity for mutual growth and understanding as we seek to develop our relationship with one another. Know that we will also be praying for you, the good people of St. Mary’s who have embraced and sacrificially supported this worthy project.

Stewardship Tithing: God’s Plan for Giving

Tithing weekend of June 5, 2011: $15,657

Student offerings: $2

From Fr. Leo. In the second reading today, St. Paul reminds the Corinthians, “There are different gifts, but the same Spirit; there are different ministries, but the same Lord.” How am I using my gifts for the common good?

From the Pews. We believe that tithing’s time has come and is part of a spiritual renewal for our parish. Our family has begun to tithe, and already we have seen God’s blessings on us. We hope that all our parishioners will also begin to give back to God what He deserves.

My child’s good deed for the week. Several of our children offered these as their tithe in addition to their financial gift: I helped set up for my sister’s First Communion party. I played with my baby sister.

“Christ was calling me to serve Him as a priest … I am deeply grateful to God for my vocation to the priesthood. Nothing means more to me or gives me greater joy than to celebrate Mass each day and to serve God’s people in the Church. That has been true ever since the day of my ordination as a priest. Nothing has ever changed it, not even becoming Pope.”

—Pope John Paul II, September 15, 1987

“And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one

of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different

tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.”

A Moment with Mary

The moon illuminates the night when

the sun has set and before the next

sunrise; Mary, too, often illuminates

those who are in the night of faith and

being tested . . . if they invoke her.

—Raniero Cantalamessa

“Father John Baptist Causse, a German priest, was sent to Lancaster during the autumn of 1785 (as St.

Mary’s seventh pastor) by the Prefect-Apostolic in America, Rev. Dr. John Carroll. Succeeding Father Luke Geissler as pastor of St. Mary’s Parish, he was the first secular priest to serve the congregation; all of his predecessors having been members of the Jesuit order. ...Father Causse was one of the founders of Franklin College, which later became Franklin & Marshall College after merging with Marshall College in 1853. ...When Father Luke Geissler made his last stop at St. Mary’s in the spring of 1785 (he also served several other missions), he was suffering from an illness which caused his death a year later at Conewago. Apparently knowing there was no priest available to replace him, he took the register of baptisms, marriages and funerals with him. It was never returned to Lancaster and there is no evidence that it still exists. More than a year after his arrival in Lancaster, Father Causse started a new church register for St. Mary’s Parish. It began with the year 1787…”
