The National Trust for Historic Preservation

(www.PreservationNation.org) is a non-

profit membership organization bringing

people together to protect, enhance and

enjoy the places that matter to them. By

saving the places where great moments

from history—and the important moments

of everyday life—took place, the National

Trust for Historic Preservation helps

revitalize neighborhoods and communities,

spark economic development and

promote environmental sustainability. With

headquarters in Washington, DC, eight

regional and field offices, 29 historic sites,

and partner organizations in 50 states,

territories, and the District of Columbia,

the National Trust for Historic Preservation

provides leadership, education, advocacy

and resources to a national network

of people, organizations and local

communities committed to saving places,

connecting us to our history and collectively

shaping the future of America’s stories.

From the President

In 2010, the National Trust for Historic Preservation awarded more than $61 million in grants, loans, and direct equity investment to support preservation work across the country.

This financial support was catalytic in communities nationwide. As you will see on the pages that follow, we found financing to transform an Oklahoma warehouse into an art studio and instruction space, helped homeowners in Ithaca, N.Y., learn how to repair their historic windows, and welcomed our 18th class of diversity scholars to the National Preservation Conference in Austin, Texas.

We are tremendously proud of these efforts, and deeply grateful to the generous corporations, foundations, and individuals whose support made this work possible. To highlight just a few:

z American Express affirmed its support for Partners in Preservation by pledging an ad-ditional $10 million to the program over the next five years. The program has already invested $5.5 million to help preserve more than 100 sites in select cities nationwide.

z Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation provided $815,000 to support 19 resto-ration projects on historic schools nationwide. Nine of these grants went to Rosenwald Schools, important landmarks that were built in the early 1900s to educate African-American children in the segregated South and Southwest.

z The Robert W. Wilson Charitable Trust continued its challenge grant program to strengthen statewide and local partner organizations across the country. To date, Part-ners in the Field has supported 54 field representatives who are helping preserve more than 1,600 historic resources.

We also owe a special thank you to the members, partners, and friends who pledged more than $400,000 to the Richard and Julia Moe Preservation Fund for Statewide & Local Partners, in honor of Dick’s retirement as president of the National Trust. The funds will spark innovation at the statewide and local level.

I hope you will take a minute to read about what the National Trust is doing to save the places that matter in your community. State by state, project by project, we are creating a brighter future for America’s cultural heritage.

Thank you for your commitment to this important work.

the national trust Preservation Fund

When the phone rings at the National Trust’s

front desk in Washington, the most frequent-

ly asked question is “What kind of funding is

available to help us save our town square?”

Or theater, cemetery, city hall, fire station,

dance pavilion, historic home…whatever it is

that tells the story of that community’s past.

Fortunately, thanks to the generosity of

donors who recognize the need to nurture

and assist preservationists working at the

local level, we can help many of these call-

ers through the National Trust Preservation

Fund. This fund provides a critical source of

“seed grants” to advance local preservation

efforts and jump-start promising rehabilita-

tion projects.

In 2010 more than 870 organizations requested

$18 million in funding from the National Trust.

Responding to this need, the National Trust

distributed more than $4.7 million in grants,

loans, scholarships, and awards, and $56

million in equity investments in rehab proj-

ects made possible through National Trust

Community Invest-

ment Corporation.

These funds went

to a diverse range

of groups: local and

statewide preserva-

tion organizations,

museums, historical societies, city agencies,

Main Street organizations, and community

development corporations.

2010 New Funds, Gifts, and Grant Activity

In 2010 donors provided grant funds, both

endowed and immediate pass-through, to

bolster preservation activities nationwide.

...Critical funds allow the national trust to leverage new opportunities and respond quickly to immediate threats.

In June, the Seattle–Puget Sound area became

the fifth region to receive $1 million in funding

through the Partners in Preservation program.

Through this unique collaboration between

american express and the National Trust, the

public was invited to vote on their favorite proj-

ects from a slate of 25 historic places. Eleven

major rehabilitation grants were awarded, and

the remaining 14 projects received recognition

awards for their commitment to preservation.

for a total of $1 million in grant funding.

In 2010 lowe’s Charitable and educational

Foundation renewed its support of historic

places in the United States by contributing $1

million to restore historic schools nationwide.

More than 250 applications were received

and 19 schools received funding including

nine Rosenwald Schools.

The Los Angeles County Preservation Fund

was made possible by support from the Getty

Foundation, the ahmanson Foundation,

and the ralph m. Parsons Foundation. An

additional gift was made to the fund by the

National Trust Board of Advisors in recogni-

tion of nine years of service by Timothy P.

Whalen, director of the Getty Conservation

Institute, who served as one of two advisors

from California.

The kirkpatrick Foundation provided an

$80,000 grant to establish a dedicated In-

tervention Fund for Oklahoma City, managed

by our Southwest Office. In close collabora-

tion with local partners, these critical funds

allow the National Trust to leverage new

opportunities and respond quickly to imme-

diate threats to the city’s unique heritage.

In 2010 dedicated preservation advocates

came together to build support for the

Utah Preservation Initiatives Fund, a pass-

through grant fund that has helped preserve

the state’s heritage since 2001. In addition

to a $25,000 contribution from the George

In a continuation of its long commitment to

our nation’s historic places, the Charles evans

hughes memorial Foundation, inc., awarded

$25,000 to advance preservation projects

in states that do not have adequate funding

from other sources.

The National Trust also secured a renewed gift

from the summerlee Foundation, which pro-

vided $10,000 in intervention funds to benefit

historic places in the state of Texas.

Endowed Funds

These vital pass-through funds provide an im-

mediate impact today; however, the National

Trust also remains strongly committed to ex-

panding its endowed funds to benefit historic

places in perpetuity. Gifts to create and ex-

pand endowed funds are a testament to our

Preservation lost one of its true heroes in

2010 with the death of Chairman Emeritus

dr. henry a. Jordan. As a testament to his

deep commitment to historic places, Dr.

Jordan provided a $250,000 gift through his

estate to expand the Henry A. Jordan, M.D.,

Preservation Excellence Fund. This important

resource provides grants for historic sites and

communities across the Mid-Atlantic region.

The harry e. linnemeyer irrevocable trust

contribution to expand the Missouri/Kansas

Preservation Fund, with an emphasis on

serving communities in eastern Missouri.

lt. Col. and mrs. William k. konze gener-

ously provided a $20,000 gift, continuing

their longstanding commitment to expand-

ing the Eldridge Campbell Stockton Memo-

rial Fund for Washington. Named in honor

of Mrs. Konze’s brother, this dedicated fund

benefits historic places statewide.

Advisor and longtime preservation ad-

vocate ann Bedsole contributed $12,500

to expand the Gwyn Turner Preservation

Fund for Alabama.

richard and Julia Moe Preservation Fund for Statewide and local Partners

To recognize the leadership of Richard Moe,

who retired as president of the National

Trust in 2010, the preservation community

came together to celebrate his service by

making generous gifts to expand the fund

he and his wife established to spark innova-

tion among the National Trust’s statewide

and local preservation partners. Together,

these gifts significantly expanded the rich-

ard and Julia moe Preservation Fund for

statewide and local Partners, strengthen-

ing an endowed fund that serves as a testa-

ment to the vision and dedication the of the

National Trust’s President Emeritus. (See

Crystal Prigmore, Jeffe Summer Fellow>

thanks to a $5,000 gift from the James and elizabeth Pickman Foundation, summer intern Crystal Prigmore was able to work with the southern Field office to help document sites for the Civil rights heritage trail.

Funds for internship Programs and Fellowships

Through the generous support of Trustees robert

and elizabeth Jeffe, four MBA candidates were re-

cruited in 2010 to research potential entrepreneur-

ial and business pursuits for the National Trust. The

Jeffes’ gift of $50,000 over two years will allow the

National Trust to hire another group of Jeffe Sum-

mer Fellows to continue that work in 2011.

A $5,000 gift from the James and elizabeth Pick-

man Foundation, used by the National Trust to

>

leverage additional intern funding, supported

the hiring of two interns who worked on

key projects over the summer. Their funding

also allowed the interns to attend the 2010

National Preservation Conference in Austin,

Tex., providing even greater educational and

professional development opportunities in

the areas of preservation and community

revitalization. The Pickmans have generously

renewed their gift for 2011.
