RITIQUE Towards a Socialist istory We are publish ing Simon Clarke s essay on Socialist Humanism and the Critiq ue of Economism as a further contribution to the debate on the relationship between history and theory opened by Richard Johnson in Issue (Thompson, Genovese and Socialist Humanist History , HWJ, 6, Autumn, 1978). In the letter pages, we also publish an interim response ro m Richard Johnson to the replies that followed his article in Issue 7 Like the con tributions n Issue 7, Clarke s essay is also strongly critical of Johnson s argument. I t criticises in particular, what it maintains, is a logical implication of Johnson s thesis: that historians should return to Dobb.
