Hispanic/Latino Collection, 1951 - . (Bulk Dates: 1980-2008).
24.0 cubic ft.
Scope and content note:
The Hispanic/Latino Collection is comprised of materials donated by immigrants of Hispanic
descent on Long Island, or organizations that serve this expanding population. The collection
highlights folk musicians, percussionists and interpreters of popular Latin American music from
different countries. The collection also includes videotapes of folk dance ballet and CDs and
photographs of other dance folklore groups, from a variety of countries as well as biographical
information, photographs and clippings representing Hispanic American arts in New York State
in different disciplines.
Unique items within the collection include a harp donated by Colombian folk musician Pavelid
Castañeda; a mixed media guitar sculpture from Pura Cruz, a Puerto Rican born artist; folk
crafts and weavings from Latin America; and a Flamenco dress from Spain. Also included are
music CDs interpreted by Hispanic American musician Theo Torres (Vientos del Sur), Los
Macondos de Colombia, La Familia Castañeda, pianist Marianela Santurio, and percussionists
Andrea Pryor de Manrique and Mike Santurio among many others.
An important element of the collection is the representation of Hispanic community leaders on
Long Island as well as Hispanic American organizations serving minorities in New York State.
There is extensive documentation which includes correspondence, announcements and
photographs of community based organizations offering language classes to foreign born speakers,
health services, housing, and other services to Hispanic Americans in New York State.
The collection offers a glimpse into the social life and customs of minorities in the U.S. The
papers and documentation of the Brookhaven Citizens for a Peaceful Solutions reflect the civil
rights struggles of illegal aliens in the U.S. after the bias attacks at Farmingville, Long Island, in
2000. Also present in the collection are materials (e.g., posters, press releases and photographs)
related to the making of Farmingville, the award-winning documentary movie co-produced by
lawyer, writer and filmmaker Carlos Sandoval, who is of Hispanic descent.
