Hip-Hip HOORAY! We are more than half way

through the 2016-2017 academic year! Marking

Period 2 grades are available on Genesis for your

review. If you are having trouble accessing your

Genesis account, please contact

[email protected] for assistance.

Students and Staff are working tirelessly to reach

the school’s goals by the end of the year. Continue

reading to learn all about the exciting programs

and plans the Counseling Dept has in store!

Freshmen & Sophomores

Students, continue to challenge yourself by choosing rigorous classes for next school year. Be sure to talk with your teachers and counselors if you have specific questions about course placement. All inquiries about recommendations must be directed to the content area teacher and/or department supervisor. Contact information is available on the PHS website.

For Summer, jumpstart your search for summer enrichment opportunities such as academic programs, college stay-overs, volunteering positions, internships, or a part-time job. Explore Naviance and talk with your counselor for additional summer program suggestions.

Begin to use Naviance to explore possible college interests. Think about what appeals to you: size, location, major areas of study, etc. Try the ‘SuperMatch’ to filter your interests!

Juniors

Prepare to make your course selections for your senior year. Challenge yourself! Learn more

about advanced classes. Senior year is no time to slow down!

Attend your counselor group meetings or request an appointment if you have questions or

would like additional assistance with college planning.

Register for the SAT or ACT in the spring of your Junior Year. Register for SAT at

www.collegeboard.com, and for the ACT at www.act.org. Speak with your counselor for more

information or if you think you qualify for a fee waiver.

If you are taking Advanced Placement classes, plan to register for the AP examinations that are

administered in May.

Seniors

Congratulations if you’ve submitted all of your applications! If not, continue to apply as Spring

deadlines are fast approaching! If you are still looking for schools, make an appointment with

your counselor to get some guidance on which schools may have open opportunities.

Start your application for the FAFSA! The FAFSA is completely free, it’s the ‘Free Application for

Federal Student Aid’. Submitting your FAFSA determines how much financial aid you are eligi-

ble for (grants, institutional grants/scholarships, and loans). Every senior should be completing

a FAFSA!

Hopefully by this time you’ve ordered your cap and gown, if not hurry! The prices may increase

over time and you want to make sure you’re ready to line up with the rest of the Class of 2017!

Visit gradstyle.com to place your order.

Interested in partaking in senior activities? See your Senior Class Advisors Ms. Kelly Chilakos &

Mr. Sean Horan– they can answer your many questions about prom, senior trip, etc.

Academic Groups for 9th & 10th Grade:

Counselors have been meeting in groups with students in need of academic support. Various topics are

discussed and explored including time management, motivation, study skills, and organization.

Naviance Groups for 10th Graders:

Counselors are meeting with 10th graders to continue discussing college/career readiness, options af-

ter high school, as well as continuing to familiarize students with how to utilize the many benefits of

Naviance.

Academic & College Preparedness for 11th Grade:

Counselors are running groups with all junior students to discuss various topics including post-

secondary plans, the college admissions process, financial aid/scholarships, NCAA Clearinghouse, and

SAT/ACT information. Groups meet on a weekly basis in the career center.

College Application and Readiness for 12th Grade:

Counselors are continuously meeting with Seniors to assist in the college application process. The

CCPG Dept sends local scholarships via Naviance on a weekly basis. Additionally, we send monthly

Scholarship Blasts listing various scholarships with upcoming deadlines. If you are aware of any local

scholarships within the community, please reach out to the CCPG so that we may forward the opportuni-

ties to our students.

Rising 11th and 12th Grade

Parent Conferences

In order to best serve your child as he/she

prepares for post secondary endeavors, the

CCPG Department would like to invite you to

attend an appointment to discuss educational

planning/scheduling, as well as initiate col-

lege planning. In order to accommodate as

many parents as possible, counselors will be

offering a twenty minute session per student.

These dates and times can be accessed

through the Genesis portal, similar to sign ups

for parent-teacher conferences in November.

More details will be emailed to parents.

2017-2018

Course Advisement

Counselors are currently working with rising 9th-

12th grade students to get them scheduled for

their 2017-2018 school year courses. Counselors

discuss career opportunities, life during/after PHS,

as well as other future endeavors during their indi-

vidual meetings with students. Course advisement

will continue through March.

2017 Theme: Helping students realize their

potential! Feb 6th-10th the CCPG celebrated

with students and staff!
