Gateway to Work Overview

Gateway to Work is a Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) program that seeks to improve HIP members’ physical and mental health, overall financial stability, and well-being.

It connects HIP Members with jobs, training, education, and volunteer activities (Work, Learn and Serve).

Gateway to Work Status

HIP members are assigned a Gateway to Work status based on the information they submitted to FSSA.

• Exempt – Members who meet any of the defined exemptions will not be required to participate in the program.

• Reporting Met – Members who have reported at least 80 hours per month of employment to DFR.

• Reporting – Members who are required to complete requirements to keep HIP benefits.

How Do Members Know Their Status?

They can look up their status on the FSSA benefits portal.

They can call MHS to find out their status.

Their status is also on their monthly POWER Account statement.

MHS Tip: If a member says they are not receiving their POWER Account statements, make sure they have updated DFR with their current address.

Exemptions

Some HIP members are exempt from having to participate from Gateway to Work based on health, education and other factors.

Exemptions included are:• Student

• Pregnant

• Certified Illness or Incapacity (temporary)

• Medically Frail

• Age 60 or over

• Caregiver of a dependent child younger than 7 years old

• Primary caregiver of a disabled dependent

• Substance Use Disorder (SUD)

• Homeless

• TANF/SNAP recipients

• Recently incarcerated (more than 30 days)

• Kinship caregiver of abused or neglected children (CHINS caregiver)

• Good Cause

What if a Member is Reporting but Qualifies for an Exemption?

If a member meets one of these exemptions and was not given a Gateway to Work “Exempt” status, they should call MHS at 1-877-647-4848.

Work

• Employment

• Job search activities like job fairs and applying for jobs

• Education related to employment like on-the-job training

• Homeschooling

Learn

• Adult or General education – MHS can help members register to take the High School Equivalency (HSE) test

• Job skills training

• Vocational education or training

• English as a Second Language education

What are Qualifying Activities?

Serve

• Volunteer work like helping at their children’s school, church or helping people in their neighborhood

• Community service/public service with any organization

• Community work experience

• Caregiving services

How Do Members Find Qualifying Activities?

They can complete an online assessment to help find what activity might be right for them.

• Members can also call MHS to complete an assessment.

Search HIP.IN.gov for a list of places where they can work or volunteer.

Attaching Documents

Members can attach a document to the activity, like a volunteer confirmation.

Members do not have to attach documents to get credit for their hours.

MHS Tip: Gateway to Work attachments will not be seen by anybody but the Gateway to Work team, so do not put other kinds of documents here.
