soon after it was founded in 1915, James Allison's Indianapolis Speedway Team Company became recognized for its expertise in building and refining

the modern automobile. One observer once heard Allison tell a workman, "Whatever leaves this shop over my name must be the finest work possible." These words endure at Allison to this day, 96 years later.

Since Hino Trucks introduced its conventional truck line up in 2004, Allison transmissions have been the transmission of choice. The combination of Hino Trucks’ proprietary J-Series engine and Allison transmissions have proven to provide Hino customers with maximum uptime and industry leading fuel economy. In fact, Hino Trucks have ranked highest in JD Power’s Medium Duty Truck survey for highest customer satisfaction four years in a row in the Medium Duty Engine and Transmission category.

To further solidify this relationship, Hino Trucks and Allison Transmission recently signed a multi-year, long-term agreement that will make Allison transmissions the preferred and exclusive transmission for all current and future Hino conventional trucks in the United States.

wHeRe It All begAnBefore automobile manufacturers began paying J.D. Power and Associates for insight into their customers, Dave Power was a Ford employee who found that management wasn’t especially receptive to consumer opinions. That would change in time, but not before Power launched what would become the world’s largest automobile consumer-research company.

In the beginning, J. D. “Dave” Power III worked in the auto industry, taking early jobs as a financial analyst for Ford and doing marketing research for Buick. He briefly worked for a company that produced chainsaws, where he convinced management that chainsaws shouldn’t be made and marketed with only the tree in mind, but the consumer as well. A switch to a lighter chainsaw that the company’s customer base wanted proved Power right, and sales for the company soared.

On April 1, 1968, Power, who worked from his kitchen table, took the step of starting his own research company. His first big break came from a then relatively unknown foreign auto company, Toyota, who was interested in understanding the American consumer’s taste in cars. Power’s young company provided the data.

J.D. Power and Associates is now a global marketing information services company that conducts research and surveys to develop trusted ratings for a variety of different products and industries.

As competition intensifies in the medium-duty truck engine market, quality and reliability remain the most important aspect of overall satisfaction. That’s why Hino’s new 2012 marketing campaign is “You Deserve This” and “Game On”. We know that our customers expect us to build great trucks and they deserve only the best! At Hino, we are challenged each day to provide the highest quality medium duty truck in the U.S. and sustain our reputation and awards that come our way, so…..

Looking ahead to seize tomorrow’s opportunities today has been the “Allison Way” since the company’s inception. Their ability to anticipate and meet customer needs through technological innovation has been evident from the beginning. Through the new agreement, Hino will be able to offer its customers enhanced transmission coverage on Allison equipped vehicles. All Allison 2000 Highway Series (HS) transmissions will now carry a 4-year warranty and the 2000 and 3000 Rugged Duty Series (RDS) transmissions will carry a 3-year warranty through Hino Trucks. Hino has already begun to bring this message to the market by partnering with Allison at various tradeshows and other advertising endeavors.

Jim Wanaselja, Vice President of North American Marketing, Sales and Service for Allison Transmission, added “The Hino-Allison combination has been a great success story in the medium duty truck industry. This agreement highlights our close working relationship and the importance we both place on offering our joint customers industry leading products at a greater value.”

HIno of CHICAgo tAkes ResIduAl VAlue to new HeIgHts! When Lucky Truck Rental out of Chicago, Illinois finally decided to retire their 2004 Hino FE cab chassis with 937,000 miles on it, Dave Rektorski Sales Manager for Hino of Chicago knew just what to do! Not only did Dave sell this 2004 Hino truck for $11,000 and more life on the road, but he replaced it with another Hino Truck that had 358,153 miles on it!

Dave commented, “We believe that this is not just a fluke, but a pretty good testament to the engineering that goes into a Hino. This Hino with 350K mile is just a baby in Hino life – should go another 600,000 before retiring it in four or five years!” (Did we mention that this was the third time that Rektorski had sold this truck?)

We will definitely be keeping tabs on this never ending story…..

TO THE

H I N O P A R T SCONFERENCE

Apparently what happens in Vegas gets reported here! Hino Trucks held their National Parts Conference this past October in Las Vegas with

a record number of Hino dealer parts personnel in attendance. The 2011 Parts Conference not only updated our dealer body with the latest activities at Hino, but provided a one-on-one opportunity with select business partners such as Eaton, Meritor, Donaldson and 12 other suppliers. This year’s guest speakers Mark Linton with MacKay and Co, and Paul Gurizzian with Carlisle & Company shared marketing and industry insights.

For Bob Petz, Vice President of Parts & Logistic Operations, this conference gave him an opportunity to address the Parts Team on a National level. He commented, “This conference provided managers with the tools and strategies needed to develop an action plan for improving their Parts departments’ customer service and profitability. Our intent was to create an atmosphere of open discussions and topics relevant to their dealership.”

Also during the Conference, Hino held the final round of the first ever National Part Skills Competition. The

Challengers included Chris Poulin – TriCounty, David Zainfeld – Rush Houston, Joey Zarillo – MHC Kansas City, Monica Moore – Fleetcare Commercial Trucks and Bryan Lach – Rush Texarkana. (Not in attendance was finalist Dale Nicholson – Rush Atlanta)

field was narrowed down to six from the over 100 dealer personnel that tested their abilities to make the final cut. The now annual competition aims to determine the top Parts Managers across the country as well as nurture the spirit of competition among dealerships and enhance individual skills.

The person that rose above the pack was Chris Poulin of Tri-County Truck & Equipment. Chris has been with Tri-County Truck & Equipment for over 11 years and is Parts Director for the Pompano Beach and West Palm Beach, Florida locations. When asked about his experience with Hino Chris said, “I have been involved with Hino parts since 1998, and I really enjoy the relationship I am able to have with the field reps, the people at the PDC and corporate. I have always had positive experiences with each and every individual I have had the opportunity to work with. I really enjoyed the parts skills competition and the conference. Being recognized by Hino is an honor for me, and I hope to be able to compete again at the next event!”

These top competitors walked away with some great prizes and have the distinction of being the upper echelon of Hino Parts Specialists nationwide. As winner, Chris Poulin also has his choice of a 3-night trip for two to several locations. We congratulate all participants and thank them for their enthusiasm and efforts throughout the year!

What does a customer look for in a propane supplier? Dependability? Safe delivery? A commitment to service? Competitive pricing? Rymes Propane and Oil has been demonstrating those attributes to its many customers for more than 40 years. Rymes Propane & Oil was founded in 1969 by Jim and Carol Rymes and to this day, the company is still owned and operated by the Rymes family, providing full-service propane gas and heating oil delivery to customers throughout New Hampshire and the surrounding areas. Rymes currently has 34 Hino trucks in their fleet of over 170 trucks and work exclusively with Hino Trucks dealer, Rochester Truck. “We love the price and quality that is put into our Hino’s. And, we are also lucky to have a dedicated dealer who invests in the Hino brand and philosophy,” said Jim Rymes, Jr.

Rymes has found a formula that works to grow their business. The all-brother management team includes John Rymes – Sales & Marketing guru, Tom Rymes – their Computer wizard and Jim Rymes who admits to having diesel running through his veins, is the ‘truck guy’. And they measure that success by the number of long term employees still on their payroll.

mytHs bustedbIodIesel mytHs bustedMyth: Biodiesel is an experimental fuel and has not been thoroughly tested.Fact: Biodiesel is one of the most thoroughly tested alternative fuels on the market. A number of independent studies have shown that biodiesel performs comparably to petroleum diesel but with greater benefits to the environment and human health.

Myth: No objective biodiesel fuel standard exists.Fact: The biodiesel industry has been active in setting quality standards for biodiesel for more than 15 years. ASTM specifications exist for diesel fuel and biodiesel fuel blends from 6 to 20 percent (B6 – B20 (D7467-09)), biodiesel blends up to B5 to be used for on- and off-road diesel applications (D975-08a), and home heating and boiler applications (D396-08b).

Myth: Biodiesel does not perform as well as diesel.Fact: One of the major advantages of biodiesel is the fact that it can be used in most existing diesel engines and fuel injection equipment in blends up to 20 percent with little impact to operating performance. In more than 50 million miles of in-field demonstrations, B20 showed similar fuel consumption, horsepower, torque, and haulage rates as conventional diesel fuel.

Myth: Biodiesel use voids manufacturers’ engine warranty coverage.Fact: All Hino 2011 and 2012 model year cab over and conventional trucks powered exclusively with Hino’s proprietary J-Series engines are approved to use B20 blends that contain biodiesel blend stock (B100) compliant to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D6751, blended with diesel fuel compliant to ASTM D975. Hino trucks built prior to the 2011 model year are approved to use B5 (5 percent) biodiesel.

Myth: Biodiesel has fuel quality problems.Fact: A study released in 2008 by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) shows the biodiesel industry has substantially met national fuel quality standards. The study demonstrated that plants certified under BQ-9000 consistently hit the quality mark.

Myth: Biodiesel doesn’t work in cold weather.Fact: Properly managed, high quality biodiesel blends are used successfully in the coldest of climates. Biodiesel will gel in very cold temperatures, just as common #2 diesel does. Although pure biodiesel has a higher cloud point than #2 diesel fuel, typical blends of 20 percent biodiesel are managed with similar management techniques as #2 diesel.

Myth: Biodiesel increases greenhouse gases because it causes land to be cleared.Fact: U.S. biodiesel reduces lifecycle carbon emissions by 60 to 80 percent, depending on the source, making it the best carbon reduction tool of any liquid fuel commercially available. Biodiesel is the first advanced biofuel to make it to market.

Myth: Biodiesel contributes to rising food prices.Fact: Produced from a variety of renewable resources, such as plant oils, fats, recycled grease, and even algae, biodiesel is the most diverse fuel on the planet. And soybean-based biodiesel actually has a positive impact on the world’s food supply.

tRuCkIn’ on bIodIeselHino announced last July that 2011 and 2012 model year conventional trucks have been approved to use up to B20 blends. According to the National Biodiesel Board (NBB), B20 biodiesel blends are now approved for use in more than 95% of the medium-duty truck market in the United States, and by more than 60% of the total U.S. diesel vehicle and equipment manufacturers.

Hino has been selected as the recipient of one of the biodiesel industry’s prestigious 2011 “Eye on Biodiesel Awards”. The “I-Awards” represent the biodiesel industry’s top honors, and are bestowed upon companies, groups or individuals who have helped carry the biodiesel torch, fostering understanding, mentoring others and encouraging broader use of this cleaner burning, sustainable fuel. Hino was nominated for an award this year for serving as a trailblazer among the Asian manufacturers as well as among hybrid truck manufacturers in supporting the use of B20 biodiesel blends in your vehicles.

Questions & AnswersHow many Hino trucks have been produced worldwide since inception? How many countries worldwide are they sold? Hino has produced 3.2 million trucks (from 1942 to March, 2011) and are sold in about 170 countries and regions.

What are Hino’s GCWR (gross combination weight ratings) for the 2012/2013 model years (in pounds)? The GCWR for all models will now be shown on the 2013MY Spec Sheets that will be sent to dealers in February. Will HinoSpec be updated soon? Hino made significant investments into the HinoSpec software application in past years and overall feedback has been extremely positive. The latest changes that enhanced the performance reporting functionality, focusing on more user friendly weight distribution functionality was well received by our dealers who were involved in the development and testing phases. Please contact Hino Logistics if there are specific suggestions or comments. We very much appreciate your feedback so we can continue to better understand dealer issues and continue to enhance the applications.

Thank you for your questions & interest in Hino Trucks.

Mac was actively involved in the dealership until 1962. His son, Paul Matheny, joined Matheny Motors in 1952 and retired from the dealership 32 years later in 1984.

Mike Matheny, third generation, joined Matheny Motors in 1969. Mike is currently the CEO of Matheny Motor Truck Company.

The fourth generation of the Matheny Family joined the company in June 1988 with Mike's daughter, Marni Matheny Kepple, as Treasurer. June 1991, marked the addition of Tim Matheny, Mike's son. Tim is President

of Matheny Motor Truck Company, President of Matheny Leasing, Inc., and currently serves as Chairman of Hino’s National Dealer Council.

Today, Matheny Motors has dealership locations in Nitro WV, Parkersburg WV, Marietta OH, Mineral Wells, WV and Woodbridge, Virginia. The longevity and continued success of Matheny Motors is a testimony to the value of great products and personal customer service...values that will serve as a benchmark for many generations to come.

Tim Matheny summed up their business success, “The first 90 years of our business has taught us one crucial thing: we are here today thanks to our talented employees and loyal customers. Since Matheny Motors opened its doors in 1922, we have partnered with customers in good times – and we have supported them through tough economic times.
