THE POOL IS OPEN!! Hinds community pool would like to thank those who came to help clean and paint the pool, especially the Hinds Lions. Thanks to the Ashburton Council for supplying the paint. Thanks also to Tarbotton Contracting for the loan of the pump to empty the pool and ATS for their awesome chlorine prices. Thanks to the local farmers who have donated stock to help financially keep the pool open, it is such an expense to keep the pool running so it’s much appreciated. Thanks to Dave Kingsbury for all your help with maintenance and getting water in the pool. For up to date information on the pool search “Hinds Community Pool” on Facebook. Although the supper room of the Hinds Community Centre in Rogers Street Hinds, was built in 1979 and the Main Hall in 1983, these buildings simply replaced the wooden structure built in 1910 and added to over the years. The Ashburton Guardian reported faithfully on the various activities held in the hall; for many years the hub of cultural and social life. One example from 30th October 1916 follows: “The Hinds Hall was well filled on Saturday evening to extend a welcome to Mr AA Moore, AB of HMS “Pyramus” who is home on leave and Gunner RJ Moore, who is down on final leave from camp. Mr J. Cook (then the Headmaster of the Hinds School) occupied the chair, and Miss O McKenzie performed piano-forte selections....... After delivering a patriotic speech, the chairman presented to the brothers beautifully engraved medals from friends in Hinds and on behalf of Lieutenant Guiness from the Hinds Signal Troop he presented Gunner R Moore with a silver-mounted pipe in a case. Both recipients suitably responded. After supper the room was cleared for dancing. Miss Holland and Messrs J Barrett and F Lord supplied the music and Mr J Cook acted as Master of Ceremonies.” The Hinds Community Centre still plays an integral role in district activities, any further

Ashburton District and contributed to 61

injury crashes between 2010 and 2014,

including nine fatalities.

This year in Mid Canterbury alone, 80

people have been processed for driving with

excess breath alcohol. The CAAP team will

be out and about promoting the “Safety

First. Drive Sober” concept throughout the

summer months.

A safety first approach incorporating numerous target areas and initiatives is being promoted

by local drink drive campaigners as this year’s holiday season campaign gets underway.

“Safety First. Drive Sober” is the catchphrase for this year’s summer Community Alcohol

Action Project (CAAP) drink driving campaign, which was launched at a breakfast function

to around 30 people today (December 3rd).

CAAP co-ordinator Kate Spicer said alcohol was the most widely used drug in New Zealand,

with about 85% of New Zealanders aged 16-64 years reporting they have consumed a drink

containing alcohol in the past year. Locally, according to the Community Views Survey (as

carried out by the Ashburton District Council during the Local Alcohol Policy process), the

most common place those over 18 chose to drink was “at home” followed by “at a family or

friend’s house”. Over half of respondents drink at nightclubs, and over a third drink at bars.

“This is why the holiday season campaign is targeting licensed premises and social hosts,” Ms

Spicer said.

The concept, which is now in its 23rd year, has traditionally involved the launch of a holiday

season campaign, complemented with other “drink-drive” based activities. This year is no

different with activities under the “safer choices”, “safer environments” and “safer

communities” being planned and co-ordinated.

“This incorporates such things as resources including posters, bottle bags, as well an

advertising campaign, plus this year we will also man a food caravan offering free sausages

and water to those visiting licensed premises in the CBD, which is about promoting good

host responsibility and eating before you drink”. The caravan will be set up outside The

Print Room for late night revellers in the CBD on December 12 and 19th.

HINDS SQUASH The end of the year is coming for the squash club again. The draws have finished and the club is available for social games/drinks over summer for members. Our AGM has been and gone with club Patron Alan Reith standing down. Alan has been an integral part of the club with an outstanding 35 years in this position. The committee would like to thank Alan for his service to the club and welcome Shayne Jones to this role. We would also like to thank everyone who has donated calves, money and time to enable the club to run smoothly.

ATS Longbeach Coastal Challenge 2015

Our first year at Longbeach Estate and a record number of entries made for a double

celebration at this year ATS Longbeach Coastal Challenge. The event is jointly

organised by Hinds and District Lions and Longbeach School volunteers and this year

brought together 1213 bikers, walkers and runners to tackle the picturesque Mid

Canterbury coast.

It is the ninth year the event has been run and was once again it was a celebration of

community spirit with families and individuals competing, and in one case three

generations crossing the finish line together. All money raised from the event is

divided between the two organisers and goes back into our community to help

support initiatives involving youth and local families.

We are extremely grateful to all our sponsors, volunteers,

competitors and supporters for making 2015 the best year yet.

Growing up in North Canterbury and gaining a degree in geology can be seen as key inspiration for landscape artist, Dan Rutherford. The Hinds Ladies Dinner Club heard from Dan at their October meeting and a number of the guests commented that they were itching to get into the garden after Dan’s talk. He shared images of both his own life and work as well as beautiful images from gardens from around the world. Themes included outdoor rooms, considering how the garden is viewed from inside and how to create perspectives in our gardens. From this we may see a number of hedges in our district sporting windows!

His sense of humour and play is evident in his work, with Dan sharing a story of a huge, sighing orb which would startle passers-by of his home. These orbs feature in a number of his projects including landscaping at a back at Oahu – a place we’d all like to visit. Dan has won People's Choice at Singapore Garden Festival, Gold at Ellerslie International Garden Show, supreme Lighting at Ellerslie International Garden Show, but to Dan, its evident, that gardens are all about enjoying being outdoors with family and friends. Community Response Forum A public meeting hosted by the Greater Canterbury Community Response Forum will be held on 1 December at 5.30 at the Council Chambers Meeting Room, 2 Baring Square East. The meeting will focus on residents’ views on living in the Ashburton district and will complement information gathered through the Ashburton Community Survey to form a community action plan. The results of the survey and input from the Community meeting is expected to be available in March 2016. Council gets into the Christmas spirit Two Ashburton sites will glow with new Christmas lights this festive season.Ashburton District Council will light up the Clock Tower and a large conifer tree in the Ashburton Domain from early December. Additionally, new lights are being installed into Baring Square West. These are moving to LED lights that can be programmed to change colour at various times of the year.

A Message From Councillor Stuart Wilson

Congratulations to the two young Hinds School representatives who gave a very good presentation at the Young Persons Forum at Council, well done Eva And Sabrina. The Hinds Reserve with the new playground is looking great. With the pool cleaned and painted, and plans under way for the new toilets, the Southern Rugby Club changing rooms and the new and enlarged Hinds Fire Unit Shed things are on the move. The Hinds District can be proud of this public space, it is a case of locals and council working together for the benefit of all residents. We in Hinds area have always been fortunate to have people who have been willing to volunteer and support local organisations. This has ensured that our district is a great place to live. We have a top grade Community Centre used by many groups including the school children, but it needs people on the committee, to oversee and take care of maintaining the building. The Citizens Association has the potential to promote the Hinds area not only to the District Council but for everyone living here or looking to work in this area. However at the moment many organisations are struggling to operate because there are fewer people willing to give their support. The cleaning and painting of the Hinds Memorial Baths is an example of what can be achieved when everyone gives a little time and effort. I wish everyone a pleasant and enjoyable family time over Christmas and New Year.

Young Persons Forum 11 schools and the Ashburton Youth Council participated in the Young Persons Forum on 18 November in the Council Chamber including Hinds School students, Eva Kelly and Sabrina Irvine. The suggested topic was the new Ashburton Library. The students shared findings from their survey that at Hinds School 73 children used the library while 58 did not, and suggested the upgrade could change this. Ideas included interactive activities, an in house blog and visits from authors.

there is no gate charge or donation requests, everything has been made available for all people to attend by sponsors money, services and goods plus hundreds of volunteer hours. The 2015 headline act is Stevie Tonks, who is a household name since journeying to fourth place in the last X Factor NZ’s season. Stevie’s unique sound will be joined with friend Daniel Hitchens, who originates from Ashburton and is carving out a name onto stages over New Zealand. Add to this impressive line-up: Julia Bell, The Bryan Sisters, Luke Glendining, Sarah Heney, Olivia Stewart, Awatea Timothy, Matt van den Yssel, Layna Hunt and Kayla Marshall who will be accompanied by an amazing backing band directed by Mel Roberts as well as a children’s choir and of course: Father Christmas! The immensely popular Mega fireworks display will be back again for the third year to end the night around 10pm. So gather your family, work crew and friends together for a fun night of Christmas celebration at the Ashburton Domain Oval, December 12, at 7.00pm. As last year saw over 8,000 people fill the Oval, you are advised to come early to find a good spot to enjoy some of the hot food and coffees that will be placed around the venue from late afternoon onwards. The event holds a no glass rule and there will be a large security presence at the event. Things are warming up with Ashburton’s Mitre 10 Mega Christmas in the Park. The stage has been set once again for a fun-filled, talent packed night of Christmas excitement, and it’s going to be better than before! This is the third year for this event and organisers Lisa Anderson and Carmen Lye both agree that the preparations are running more smoothly each year. “We learn from each year which in turn makes each event easier to organise” says Mrs Anderson, “we are streamlining everything from the sound to the amenities and who you see on stage, so we are certain this will be the biggest and best Mitre 10 Mega Christmas in the Park ever”. With the help of some of Ashburton's churches and generous locally owned businesses, enough money has been raised once again to pay for the full event,

Meet Rachel Goodger-

Your Ravensdown Agri Manager Hello, my name is Rachel Goodger. I cover south of the Hinds River down to Temuka. I am originally from a farm just out of Pleasant Point, but now reside on a station close to Fairlie. With an agricultural upbringing, I decided I would enrol in Lincoln University after High School to study a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Hons). I didn’t know exactly where that would lead, but I learnt along the way that plants and soils were where my interests lay. I started my job with Ravensdown in January 2015 and am thoroughly enjoying it. “I love that Ravensdown can offer an exciting range of products for many different farm systems.” We’re best known for our fertiliser, but we also offer the full package in seed, agrochemical and animal health products. I love meeting new people and enjoy being able to help customers in

The goal for the HDCA this year was to publish a bi-monthly newsletter that gets dropped in RD3, RD4, RD5 and Hinds township mail boxes.

In these newsletters there is up to date information about activities that have happened, upcoming events, sporting and cultural activities that are available, what local groups have been up to, notes from Council, basically anything that is important to Hinds and the surrounding district!

In order for this to be successful we need support from local businesses in the form of advertising and would also appreciate your backing by supplying articles from groups, clubs or organisations that you belong to. This is a great way to let the district know what is happening or could be happening in the next few months. Articles will be placed in the newsletter for free and there is a small cost associated with advertising.
