WELCOME

DEAR VISITORS:

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the entire Hinds family, I am pleased to welcome you to Hinds Community College where you will find a quality education with a personal and friendly approach at a reasonable cost.

The focus of our college is on the student, and we make every effort to provide programs and services that enable students to be successful. We are extremely pleased with the graduation/completion rate of our athletes.

Among those working hard for the betterment of the college are members of the coaching staff who have gone out of their way to prepare their team for this athletic event. Also to be commended are the band, Hi-Steppers, cheerleaders and their sponsors, the athletic director and the athletes.

We are particularly pleased to have parents, students and alumni here. We thank you for your support of our educational endeavors. We hope you enjoy the game and continue to take an interest in the activities at Hinds.

The college’s athletic program is just one extension of the comprehensive academic, vocational and technical instruction offered at Hinds. Athletics complement a strong instructional base that provides educational opportunities of the highest caliber at the college’s six locations.

With the college serving the local communities since 1917, we look eagerly toward many more years of providing a wide variety of educational and cultural opportunities as we continue to motivate students with a learning environment that’s close to home, affordable and friendly.

To our visiting coaches, players and college representatives, we extend a warm welcome. We hope you enjoy your visit at Hinds as well as the athletic competition that adds excitement and challenge to the students’ educational experience.

On behalf of the Hinds Community College athletic department, I want to welcome you to our college. Hinds is the largest community college in the state, and we also have the largest sports program of any community college. Our teams compete year in and year out for state and regional titles, and our coaching staff brings a wide variety of success in every single sport.

Hinds continues to dominate in the area of academic achievement among athletes. Since 1987, we have received the David Halbrook Award 12 times. This award is given to the community/junior college with the highest percentage of graduates or completers in its athletic program.

Prior to the Homecoming game with East Central Community College on Sept. 29 we will honor our class of 2011 inductees in the Hinds Sports Hall of Fame. Please make your plans now to be a part of these activities and celebrations.

It is my hope that you enjoy watching our teams and continue to support Hinds athletics throughout the year.

2011 HINDS FOOTBALL Head Coach

Gene Murphy, Head Football CoachGene Murphy, who also serves as athletic director at Hinds Community College, has returned to the

coaching ranks in the role of head football coach for the third season in his second stint as head coach.The Raymond native has served as the school's athletic director since July 1997, after serving as the head

football coach from 1987 to 2003. Murphy had remarkable success during his tenure, compiling a 133-41-5 overall record.

Murphy has since gone 3-6 in 2009 and 5-4 in 2010 for a composite overall record of 141-51-5. The Eagles won six state and regional championships during this time frame, including four

consecutive titles from 1994-1997. Numerous former Eagles coached by Murphy continued their playing careers at four-year universities throughout the nation and in the National Football League (NFL). The 2009 Eagles went 3-6 in Murphy’s first year back.

Murphy, who was also the offensive coordinator during his first time around, was selected as Region 23 Coach of the Year six times in 16 years as the Eagles head man. He also coached 31 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Americans and two NJCAA National Players of the Year.

Before coming to Hinds in 1983 as the defensive coordinator, Murphy spent three years as the head football coach and athletic director at Caldwell High School in Columbus, where he led the team to a South Little Ten Conference runner-up finish.

Murphy also spent one season as the assistant football coach and head baseball coach at Philadelphia High School before relocating to Caldwell High.

Murphy received his Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Education degree from Mississippi State University. He also received an additional School Administration Certification from Mississippi College.

He is married to Dot, who currently serves as the assistant athletic director at Hinds. The couple has three children: son, Kelly, and daughters, Jennifer and Ashley.

Assistant CoachesReginald Dillon, Running Backs Reginald Dillon is entering his third season as the running backs coach at Hinds. Dillon also serves as

the school’s men’s track coach.His tenure at Hinds has seen a remarkable amount of success, including 16 individual national

championships and three National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) records in track. He was also the 2008 NJCAA Coach of the Year.

Dillon is a native of Tylertown and is a graduate of Tylertown High School. He furthered his education at Hinds Community College and Jackson State University. After his time at JSU, Dillon returned to Hinds, serving as an assistant football coach from 1997-2004.

Dillon has sent numerous athletes to four-year colleges around the nation, including four currently at schools around the Southeast. Perhaps his best known athlete is Trell Kimmons of Coldwater. Kimmons won the 2006 NJCAA Indoor title when he ran the 60-meter dash in 6.53 seconds. He also went on to win the 200-meter dash in 2006 at Kansas State University, finishing in 20.89 seconds. Kimmons has since signed with Adidas and runs professionally.

Dillon also worked with Tyson Gay, the American record holder in the 100-meter dash (9.77), during summer 2007.

Kenny Jackson, Defensive lineKenny Jackson will begin his second season as defensive line coach for the Eagles. The former Hinds

standout played for Gene Murphy and the Eagles in 1997 and 1998.Jackson comes to Raymond from Itawamba Community College, where he was the defensive line coach

from 2004-2008, before being named defensive coordinator for the Indians in 2009. While at ICC, Jackson also coached the punt return team and served as the team’s strength and conditioning coach.

The Indians led the state in sacks four out of six seasons that Jackson was with them, while leading the state in tackles for loss in five out of six years.

After receiving his Associate of Arts degree from Hinds, Jackson moved on to the University of Mississippi, where he was a two-year standout on the defensive line for the Rebels. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology.

Jackson continued his playing career by spending part of the 2002 season as a defensive tackle with the Detroit Lions. He finished his professional career after the 2004 season, in which he spent time as a defensive tackle/offensive lineman with the Columbus Destroyers of the American Football League (AFL).

Jackson and his wife, Vikesha, have a son, Khalil.

2011 HINDS FOOTBALL Kelly Murphy, Offensive coordinator/QuarterbacksKelly Murphy, also a Hinds alumnus, returns to his community college alma mater to begin his third

season back on the Hinds staff. He played for Hinds in 1997 and 1998 before spending the 1999 and 2000 seasons as a graduate assistant coach.

During his time at Hinds, Murphy was a part of two state championship teams, one in 1997 as a player and one in 2000 as a graduate assistant coach. The Central Hinds Academy graduate also was part of the 1999 state runner-up team as a coach.

Murphy, who will coach the Eagles quarterbacks and wide receivers, comes to Hinds from Wayne County High School, where he served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for a program that won the 2002 (5A), 2003 and 2006 (4A) State Championships. Murphy also won a 2A State Championship at Ackerman High School in his lone year at AHS in 2001.

Murphy, who received a Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State University and a Master of Science degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, lives in Raymond with his wife Katie, a former Hinds cheerleader, and their two sons, Thomas and Rhett, and a daughter, Lainey Kate.

Brian Oakes, Offensive LineBrian Oakes is in his first season on the Hinds coaching staff, where he will tutor the Eagles offensive

line.He is a former Hinds player under head coach Gene Murphy. He also competed at Northwestern State

(La.) University and Southern Arkansas University before injuries cut his playing career short. Oakes comes to Raymond from Stone High School in Wiggins, where he was the head coach from

2006-2010. The Tomcats made the playoffs in 2008 and 2009 after back-to-back winning seasons.He began his coaching career in 1998 as an assistant coach at Hattiesburg High School before moving

to Belhaven College for a year. He then served as a graduate assistant at Delta State University, where he was a part of the Statesmen winning the school's first national championship in 2000.

Oakes, who received his bachelor's degree in coaching and sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1998, spent five seasons at Warren Central High School, his alma mater, before going to Stone High.

Oakes received a master's degree in health and a specialist's degree in educational leadership from the Mississippi College in 2006.

He is married to Bridgett, a former Hinds cheerleader and 1995 Homecoming queen, and the couple has two sons, Ranson and Briley.

Lee Wilbanks, Wide receiversLee Wilbanks is in his second season as wide receivers coach for the Hinds Eagles. He comes to Hinds

from Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn., where he helped lead the Eagles to the 2008 and 2009 Mid-South Conference titles, and was part of an undefeated regular season (11-0) in 2009.

While at Lambuth, Wilbanks served as the recruiting coordinator/secondary coach and was part of a defensive unit that ranked fourth nationally and first in the conference in scoring defense. He also spent the 2008 season as the running backs coach.

Wilbanks was the outside linebackers coach and director of football operations during the 2007 season at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C. He also spent the 2006 season as a volunteer coach at the University of Mississippi, serving as an assistant offensive line coach.

Prior to his time at Ole Miss, Wilbanks was a graduate assistant coach at Murray State University in Murray, Ky., for the 2004-2006 seasons.

Wilbanks received his bachelor of business administration degree, with an emphasis in marketing, from Ole Miss in 2004. Wilbanks will relocate to Raymond with his wife, Caroline.

Dwike Wilson, Defensive coordinator/SecondaryDwike Wilson, who is the third member of the coaching staff to play at Hinds, is in his third season

back on the Hinds staff. Wilson played at Hinds in 1997 before serving as a graduate assistant coach in 1998 and 1999.

Wilson, a Vicksburg resident and graduate of Vicksburg High School, comes to Raymond from Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale, where he spent one season on the Tigers coaching staff.

Wilson previously spent one season at North Carolina A&T University, where he was the recruiting coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He also spent one season at Murray State University, serving as recruiting coordinator, as well as the defensive backs coach for the Racers.

Before coaching at Murray State, Wilson spent a four-year stint at Itawamba Community College. Wilson, who was a valuable member of the Eagles 1997 State Championship team, received a Bachelor

of Science degree from the University of Mississippi.Wilson is married to wife, Anntwaan, a former Hinds Hi-Stepper.

2011 HINDS FOOTBALL Kevin Lewis, Graduate AssistantKevin Lewis is in his second season as a graduate assistant with the Hinds football program, where he

works with the Eagles linebackers. Lewis is a former National Football League (NFL) standout and member of the San Francisco 49ers.

Lewis played defensive back for the 49ers from 1990-1994 until a career-ending injury resulted in his early retirement. While with the 49ers, he was part of the 1990 NFC Divisional Championship, 1991 NFC Championship finalists and claimed the individual award of the NFL Extra Effort award for outstanding leadership with the San Francisco 49ers.

In 2007, Lewis was inducted into the Northwestern State University (La.) Sports Hall of Fame. It was here that he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business management, as well as being named to the All-Conference first team and being selected as a Sporting News All -American team member.

He is married to Sarah and the couple has two sons, Cameron and Armani, and a daughter, Makayla.

Chris Mattox, Volunteer AssistantChris Mattox is in his first season on the Eagles coaching staff as a volunteer assistant in charge of safeties

and in the role of video coordinator. Mattox recently served as the director of football operations at the United States Merchant Marine

Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., during the 2010-2011 seasons.Mattox spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons as an offensive intern with the C.W. Post campus of Long Island

(N.Y.) University.He also spent the 2008 season as a public relations assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Mattox received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Central Florida.

Deborah Wiginton Caldwell, who came to Hinds from Mendenhall, led Hinds to the school’s first women’s basketball state championship in March 1974. Her performance on the court helped her gain All-State first team honors. After the 1974 season, she was selected to participate in tryouts for the United States team that competed in the World University Games.

Caldwell was also a standout on the 1973 volleyball team, leading Hinds to the state championship with a team record of 11-3.

Caldwell left Hinds to finish her collegiate career at Mississippi College, and was named All-American in 1977 and is in the Mississippi College Sports Hall of Fame.

Caldwell currently serves as a math teacher at Independence High School in Tennessee and is an adjunct professor at the University of Memphis.

Curtis Kynerd finished second in the state in the mile run as a Hinds freshman and was undefeated as a sophomore in every event he ran that year. Kynerd won the 1968 state championship with a time of 4:26.7, which set a state record that was not broken for 12 years.

Kynerd was very involved off the track at Hinds, serving as president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as a sophomore. He was a member of th e Wesley Foundation and Circle K Club.

After finishing at Hinds, Kynerd competed in track and field at Delta State University where he was given the Sportsmanship Award as a junior and was part of two undefeated teams.

He became the assistant media center director at Hinds Community College from 1975-1984, director 1984-1995 and was then dean of Instructional Technology and Distance Learning from 1996 to 2007. He was named a Hinds Life Star recipient in 2003-2004.

Leon Lett, a Fairhope, Ala. native, was a gridiron star at many levels as a defensive lineman, but got his collegiate start at Hinds Community College in 1986.

After standout seasons at Hinds, Lett went on to play at Emporia State University in Kansas and was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1991 National Football League (NFL) draft and embarked on a stellar 10-year career at the highest level. He was a two-time Pro Bowl selection in 1994 and 1998 and was voted MVP of the 1995 NFC title game. Lett won three Super Bowl titles with the Cowboys in 1993, 1994 and 1996. Lett finished his career in 2001 with the Denver Broncos. He was named to the list of Top 50 Dallas Cowboys of All-Time in 2009 for his accomplishments on the field.

Lett began coaching at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV) in 2009, serving as a volunteer assistant. He recently left the University of Louisiana-Monroe, where he was the defensive tackles coach.

He is now fellowship coach with the Dallas Cowboys. He is an ambassador for Rainbow Dreams, a Las Vegas Freedom School.

Thad Talley, a Canton native, was a captain of the Hinds football and track and field teams during his time on the Raymond Campus in the late 1950s.

Talley held the Hinds record for the half mile for an extended period of time. After his time at Hinds, Talley transferred to Furman University in South Carolina where he was

an All-Southern Conference performer for two years and ranked number six in the world in the 880-yard run at one point.

Talley went to Brevard College in Florida to become head track and field and cross country coach from 1965-1968. Talley spent the 1970-1972 seasons as the head track and field coach at Arkansas State University, the 1973-1976 seasons at the University of Kansas, and moved on to The Citadel in South Carolina, where he served as the head coach from 1976-1980. He then spent the 1980-1981 season as the women’s athletic director and assistant track coach at Charleston Southern University.

Talley spent the next 13 years as a teacher in the Summerville, S.C., school district before retiring in 1996.

Larry Weems, a Jackson native, was a football and track and field standout for Hinds in the early 1970s.

After serving at Jackson Preparatory School from 1975-1978 he became assistant football coach at Meridian High School from 1978-1980 in the first of his four stints with the Wildcats.

Weems was head junior varsity coach at the University of Mississippi from 1980-1982 before returning to Meridian High to serve as the defensive coordinator from 1982-1986.

Weems moved to Biloxi as the head football coach and director of athletics at Biloxi High School from 1987-1990, returning again to Meridian High School from 1990-2000 where he was the defensive coordinator and assistant athletic director.

From 2000-2006, Weems was the head football coach at Pearl High School, leading the Pirates to five consecutive regional championships and state playoff appearances.

After the 2006 season, Weems returned to Meridian as head coach. In 2008, his Wildcats claimed the 5A state championship by defeating South Panola High School in overtime.

The 2011 Hinds Community College Sports Hall of Fame honors these former Eagle athletes and coaches with an induction dinner at 5:30 p.m., Sept. 29, in the Mayo Field House Gymnasium. For details, please contact the Institutional Advancement office at 601.857.3363.

The Hinds Community College Eagle Marching Band and Hi-Steppers comprise one of the largest community college performing groups in Mississippi. In quality and complexity, their halftime performances rank among the best to be seen anywhere.

The Eagle Band is the largest student activity on the Raymond Campus, and has built an enviable reputation as a powerhouse among college bands. In addition to their halftime show, the Eagle Band performs exhibition shows at marching band contests, parades, concerts, and other activities.

The Hi-Steppers enjoy a widespread reputation for excellence. The precision dance team has performed in almost every county in Mississippi and has carried the name of Mississippi all over America – to the Miss America Parade in Atlantic City, the Rose Bowl in California, the Mardi Gras in New Orleans and to Jaycees conventions in Colorado Springs, Buffalo, St. Louis, Atlanta and Baltimore. These are just some of the appearances that have won the Hi-Steppers the name of Mississippi’s Goodwill Ambassadors.

SHANE SPRAYBERRY is the director of the Hinds Community College Eagle Band. A native of Ethel, he is a 1994 graduate of Holmes Community College and received his bachelor’s degree in instrumental music education from

Mississippi College in 1996. Sprayberry accepted the position of band director at Ethel High School in 1997. In 1999, he moved

to Norman, Okla., to pursue a master of music education and instrumental conducting degree from the University of Oklahoma. He studied conducting under Dr. William K. Wakefield and trombone under Dr. Irvin Wagner. He served as a graduate teaching assistant in the music department and for the PRIDE of Oklahoma Marching Band. In 1999, he was the founding director of the Community Christian School Band program in Norman.

He was named Teacher of the Year in 1997 at Ethel High School and Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year in 1999. He has served as halftime show coordinator and drill writer for high schools and colleges in both

Mississippi and Oklahoma.

RANDY MAPES joined the Hinds Community College staff in 1995, where he is the woodwind instructor and the assistant band director. He holds a master of music degree in woodwind performance and pedagogy from the University of

Southern Mississippi and a bachelor of music degree in saxophone performance from the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

Mapes previously served as the director of bands/woodwind instructor for three years and assistant band director/woodwind instructor for five years at Itawamba Community College in Fulton. He has performed in backup groups for such artists as Rod Stewart, Lou Rawls, Dudley Moore, Buddy DeFranco and Nell Carter, as well as in the Dee Barton Big Band and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.

Mapes has had articles published in the Saxophone Journal, the Mississippi Bandmaster and the Mississippi Flute Association Newsletter. Mapes is presently a member and past president of the Mississippi Public Community/Junior College Band Directors Association.

ANGELA HITE, a Florence native, is the director of the nationally-renowned Hinds Hi-Steppers Dance Team. Hite is also the administrative assistant to the dean of students for the Raymond Campus and the Hinds district.

A Hinds alumna, Hite was a Hi-Stepper and served as president of a 60-member dance line under the legendary Anna Bee. In the years that followed, Hite had the privilege of assisting Mrs. Bee and then taking over the group after Mrs. Bee’s retirement in 2007.

Hite has served as a dance team judge for numerous high schools and has judged on the state level for the American All-Star dance organization. She also directs the Miss Hinds Community College Pageant, a preliminary scholarship pageant to Miss Mississippi and Miss America.

Hite and her husband Jack, a Hinds counselor and cheerleader coach, reside in Raymond with their two children, Anna and Hunter.

Alumni Service AwardCarol Warren

Carol Warren, a 1977 Hinds graduate, has been sharing her passion for dance with the college for more than 20 years.

Warren, who is vice president of Administration and Human Resources at Magnolia Federal Credit Union in Jackson, has served as the president of the Hi-Stepper Alumni Chapter since 1990.

She is involved with Hinds students on many levels, including coordinating

Homecoming field performances by former Hi-Steppers, as well as coordinating previous Hi-Stepper galas, and helping with the Miss Hinds Community College pageant.

“Carol has shown kindness and a gentle spirit by supporting all nervous, new college students who are honored to embark on the journey of Hinds Hi-Steppers,” said Jenny Cox Holman, former Hi-Stepper. “She has tirelessly given her time and effort to sustain and uphold the values of Hinds, and it is because of her that countless Hi-Stepper alumnae are a part of the Hinds Community College

Alumni Association and actively involved in supporting the college.”Warren was selected to serve on the Membership Committee in

1983 when the Hi-Stepper Alumni Chapter was introduced. She was among 120 alumni who performed during Homecoming that year. In 1990, Warren was elected as president of the chapter.

During Warren’s term as chapter president, long-time former Hi-Stepper director Anna Cowden Bee has been honored several times, including renaming the gym used by the Hi-Steppers as Bee Hall in 1993.

Warren assists Angela Hite, current Hi-Stepper director, in coordinating a birthday party for Mrs. Bee each year, which includes a performance by current Hi-Steppers.

Also during Warren’s tenure the alumni chapter began a fund-raising project in 1996 to endow a scholarship to honor Mrs. Bee. The first scholarship was awarded during the 2000-2001 school year to a sophomore Hi-Stepper and has been awarded annually ever since.

“Carol is a constant supporter of the Hi-Steppers, the Miss Hinds Pageant and the Anna Cowden Bee Scholarship, always helping wherever she is needed,” Hite said.

Mike Hataway (1966) of Raymond, has been a dedicated instructor for more than four decades and is known for his adamant support of the college.

Before retiring in 2004 and taking his aptitude for teaching to Mississippi College, Hataway taught classes at Hinds in commercial art, graphics, photography, drawing and desk top publishing, for more than 33 years, in

addition to being the department chairman of the Graphic Communication Department.

One of Hataway’s own students, Beth Messina, went on to become the current department chair of the graphics department.

“Twenty-eight years ago, I walked into Mike’s classroom a young student, not quite sure which direction my life would take,” Messina said. “In his classroom, I learned the valuable training I needed to obtain a successful career in graphic design.”

He attended Hinds for two years, earning his associate’s degree in fine arts, before moving on to earn his bachelor’s degree in education from

Mississippi College in 1968, with art as his major. He later received his master’s degree from MC as well, with an emphasis in painting and graphic arts.

When Hataway accepted the graphics position at Hinds in 1971, he was challenged with much more than just teaching. He, along with the support of Walter Gibbes, vocational-technical education director, and Dr. Floyd Elkins, academic dean, worked to build the graphics program from the ground up

“Through Mike’s leadership, enrollment in the classes increased significantly and the program achieved a widely recognized reputation for excellence,” said Peggy Brent, chair of the English department and a colleague of Hataway’s. “Hinds’ graphics students were eagerly sought because they were knowledgeable, well-trained and productive.”

Some of his honors include being named National Teacher of the Year by the American Vocational Association in 1983, the 1995 legislative HEADWAE (Higher Education Appreciation Day – Working for Academic Excellence) faculty honoree, the Hinds 3E recipient and being include in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and Educators” seven times.

Homer Boyd (1956-1957), FootballHomer Boyd is a Raymond native who competed in football at Hinds Junior College in 1956

and 1957. He was also a graduate of Hinds County High School in Raymond, which was a part of Hinds Junior College at the time.

Boyd was named to the East-West Junior College All-American game in football, where he was a standout end on the 1957 Hinds football team that finished the season unbeaten. He was also named to the 1957 All-State team.

Boyd was a two-sport standout in high school, where he was voted Most Athletic and also ran the ½ mile event in track and field.

Boyd signed a football scholarship with then-Mississippi Southern in 1958, where he was once again a part of an undefeated team, as the Eagles went 10-0 in his junior season. He remains a member of the prestigious “M” Club at USM.

Boyd was an inductee in the Hinds Sports Hall of Fame class of 1989.

Boyd worked for 15 years with Penrod Drilling Company, whose home offices are in Dallas, Texas. The Learned resident is a member of Learned Presbyterian Church.
