  • Australian Census 2011

ABS Census 2011 will be conducted in Aug 2011. It is important that our community should be encouraged to participate fully

    and provide correct information.

Here is some information from ABS which can be used to encourage our community members. This information can be

included in your organisation newsletters and meetings. A sample Census form is attached for explanation . Page 6 of

the form is important to all of us where Language, Religion and Ancestry is filled. We need to encourage

everyone to participate and fill in correct information.

It is expected that this information will be available in Hindi soon. Information in other Indian languages is also requested.

People need to make sure that

    1. Write the other language spoken at home clearly - Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Bangla, Kannad, Gujarati, Nepali

    2. Religion should be filled in correctly -e.g. Hindu, Sikh

    3. Ancestry should be filled in correctly - e.g. Indian

  • The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) runs the Census every five years, with the next coming up in August 2011.

The Census collects information about every person and household in Australia and we need your help to make it a

success. Information collected in the Census helps all levels of government, businesses and communities to make decisions on

things such as roads, schools, housing and health clinics.

It is important that an accurate picture of the whole community is captured. Decisions that are made based on Census data will affect your everyday lives. Your participation will make a real

difference in helping your community tell their story and plan for their future.

No-one outside of the ABS will ever see your answers. The information you give about yourself and your family is kept

completely private. This means that Centrelink, Housing, Community Services, the Tax Office or any other agency will

not see your answers. They are not allowed to, by law.

So please shed some light on Census night and help create a brighter future for your community.

For more information call the Census Inquiry Service 1300 338 776 or visit www.abs.gov.au/census.

  • BEWARE - Phone

ScamA phone scam has come into light, which is suspected to be run by people of Indian origin

    targeting people in Australia.

Someone calls on the phone saying that you have been chosen for a reward by ATO and that you

will get $7000 if you send $200 to their nominated charity in India.

They even give an Australian number to call on and follow up with a reference number.

This HSWA member who gave us the news suspected it to be a fraud and hence did not get

    duped by it.

However, unfortunately a lady in Bunbury has lost a lot of money.

So it is just a warning for all our members to be very aware of who they give out their details to.
