Dear Friends,

This is the time of year to reflect on and share the previous year’s activities with our generoussupporters. With your assistance in 2014, HCP and its partner institutions in sevencountries treated over 800,000 people and provided 78,830 sight-restoring surgeries -- a25.2% increase in surgical activity over 2013. This increase in impact -- a result of our effortsto eradicate preventable blindness through high-quality ophthalmic care, training and theestablishment of world class eye care infrastructure -- demonstrates that we are not onlyproviding more care, but creating eye care systems built to last.

The premier example is our main partner in Kathmandu, the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology(Tilganga). In this report, you will read about Tilganga’s accomplishments since its expanded facility was inaugurated in April 2009,and how we hit another milestone with the February 2014 inauguration of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) EyeCenter in Ghana. You will also learn more about how our high-volume surgical campaigns and in-depth training efforts in Ethiopiaare reducing unnecessary blindness.

While the majority of our programmatic work takes place in Nepal, Bhutan, Ghana and Ethiopia, we continue to expand ourimpact through partnerships with other institutions. Tilganga is the implementing partner for our growing programs in India,Indonesia and, most recently, Myanmar.

When we started 20 years ago, the majority of our training was focused on teaching local teams in Small Incision Cataract Surgery(SICS), and this will continue. In 2014, we substantially increased our training efforts in the sub-specialties (especially cornea, oculoplastics and retina) with help from Tilganga and other partners such as the Moran Eye Center, University of Nebraska MedicalCenter and Duke University. We have also increased our investment in MD ophthalmology residency programs – crucial for futuresustainability.

In summary, all of these accomplishments could only be possible with the compassion and generosity of our donors and partners.Thank you for your support. Together, we are making a tremendous impact on preventable and treatable blindness in thedeveloping world.

With gratitude,

Geoffrey Tabin Job C. HeintzChairman & Co-Founder Chief Executive Officer

Himalayan Cataract ProjectRestoring Sight, Changing LivesMore than 39 million people worldwide suffer from blindness – but most don’thave to. More than half are blind due to cataracts, and close to 90% live indeveloping countries. The Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP) brings life-changingeye care to people in underserved areas of the world and trains local personnel tobuild sustainable eye care systems for the future.

In 2014, HCP and its partners provided screenings for morethan 800,000 individuals and performed over 78,000 surgeriesthroughout seven countries in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. We also directly supported the training of 42 ophthalmicpersonnel, more than doubling the number trained in 2013.

5-Year Review

The Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology has seen tremendousgrowth since its doors opened in 1994 and even more sincethe April 2009 inauguration of the 133,000 square footexpanded facility. Over the last five years, outpatients have increased by 55% and surgeries by 107%.

As a greatly expanded tertiary eye care center of excellence, Tilganga can accommodate hundreds of trainees each year. Since2009, Tilganga has trained over 3,103 ophthalmic personnel, including a sevenfold increase in the number of subspecialty (cornea, retina, pediatrics, oculoplastics, and glaucoma) fellowships thatprovide ophthalmologists from developing countries with hands-on,real-world diagnostic, clinical and surgical skills necessary to practicein their home setting. The Institute has also provided primary eyecare and allied health exposure training to over 1,750 communityhealth workers from Nepal.

Contributing to Tilganga’s financial stability, the establishment of the Refractive Surgery Unit (RSU), inaugurated in 2011,subsidizes Tilganga’s sliding fee scale and operational expenses. To date, the RSU has treated2,269 patients (10% free) and 2014 revenues jumped by 55% over 2013. Both theTilganga Expansion and RSU were partially funded with USAID support.

Successful Pilot Program –Trachoma Trichiasis PlusCataracts (TT Plus) In December, HCP and The Fred HollowsFoundation (FHF) conducted a pilotoutreach campaign, combining trachomatrichiasis and cataract surgeries at KuyuGeneral Hospital in Oromia. Ethiopia hasone of the highest rates of trachomaglobally and corneal scarring associatedwith the disease is the second leadingcause of blindness after cataracts.Trichiasis surgery is a simple surgical

procedure that eliminates deformities and prevents further scarring. Itis not uncommon for TT campaigns to turn away cataract patients.During the four-day pilot program, 308 cataract and over 30trichiasis surgeries were provided.

Ethiopia Eye Bank Corneal disease is the second leading cause of blindness in Ethiopiaand HCP has been working to train cornea specialists across thecountry. Presently there are six cornea specialists in Ethiopia – three inAddis Ababa, one at Gondar University, one at Jimma University, andone at Quiha Zonal Hospital. In 2014, the Eye Bank successfully

collected 131 corneas for transplant and is working on several awareness campaigns to steadily increase this number.Since 2011, HCP has been working in partnership with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, SightLife and OrbisInternational to increase efficiency of the Eye Bank.

TECHNOLOGY &PROCUREMENTHCP procured more than $1.3 million in ophthalmicequipment and supplies for programs in 25 countries. Fundingfrom HCP supporters helps to ensure that dependableequipment and materials are available where and whenneeded for HCP programs.

Retinal Eye Care Training andSpecialized EquipmentRestoring Sight in BhutanHCP has partnered with the Royal Governmentof Bhutan since 2000 to develop acomprehensive eye care system with a strongfocus on the sub-specialties — such as retina. In 2012, Dr. Bhim Rai completed his HCP-sponsored retina fellowship, and HCP procureda full set of highly-specialized equipmentnecessary to provide retina care. The combinedinvestment in both training and equipmentcontributed to the following success story.

Tshering Penjor, a Bhutanese student studyingarchitecture in India, was taking part in afriendly basketball game with fellow studentswhen he suffered a severe eye injury in anaccident on the court. Concerned about thepotential for permanent vision loss, Tsheringreturned to Bhutan and underwent asuccessful surgery by Dr. Rai.

Penjor attributes his successful recovery to the training Dr. Bhim Rai received with HCP support.

”My vision gradually improved with eachpassing day. And so has my confidence andhappiness I shall always remain grateful to Dr.Bhim Rai and his team for giving me the joy ofbeing able to see the world, as well as faithand confidence in the Bhutanese healthcaresystem,” explained Penjor in a letter to HCP.

Investing in OphthalmologyResidents: Part of the Solution In 2014, HCP increased support for medical residentsspecializing in ophthalmology. Residents represent thefuture of ophthalmology for their countries, and high-quality programs are vital to establish sustainable eye caresystems. HCP’s clinical faculty work with local residencydirectors on curriculum development, providing lectureswhile in country and hands-on training through cataractcampaigns. HCP also supports residency exchangeprograms to provide ophthalmology residents withenhanced clinical and surgical exposure.

“Each of us started our four-yearophthalmologyresidency programwith a lot ofenthusiasm, energyand passion ofbecoming a betterophthalmologist. Andmost importantly weare aiming to becomepart of the solution inthe alleviation of thehuge burden ofblindness in Ethiopia. The financial support hasgreatly helped us to concentrate on our studiesand will play a crucial role in our success.”

— Dr. Daniel Getenah, Ophthalmology Resident, Ethiopia

Dr. Daniel Geteneh hascommitted to returning toMekelle after residency toprovide eye care in a regionwith few ophthalmologists.(Approximately 60% ofEthiopia’s ophthalmologistslive in the capital region.)
