Princess Ruth Ke'elikölani was the honored ali'i, orroyalty, in Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center'sMonarchy Tribute this February. Held on February9 to honor the Princess' birthday, the event com-memorated the life and legacy of the Princesswho held fast to the traditions of theHawaiian people. Songs and danceswere performed by Hälau O Ka HanuLehua to honor the Princess and herlegacy.

Princess Ruth's life was filled withhardships and symbolized her dedica-tion to and perpetuation of theHawaiian culture. She is consideredone of the most pivotal and influentialcharacters in Hawaii's history. Great-granddaughter of Kamehameha I and cousin toPrincess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, Princess Ruth wasconsidered the richest woman in the kingdom.Due to her extreme generosity she bestowed mostof her land to Pauahi. Because of this gift, PrincessPauahi's dream of a place for Hawaiian keiki toreceive a quality education and sustain their cul-ture became a reality. Her contribution of landwas the foundation for the creation ofKamehameha Schools, and is considered PrincessRuth's greatest accomplishment.

The Princess was born on February 9, 1826 toMataio Kekuanao'a and Kalani Pauahi who tragi-

cally died during childbirth. Kamehameha I'sfavorite wife Ka'ahumanu then cared for her untilshe passed away when Ruth was only six yearsold. Sent to live with her father and stepmother,

Ruth remained with them until she was marriedat the age of sixteen. Her husband died

shortly after they were married, and noneof their three children reached adult-hood.

As a member of the Kamehamehafamily, Ruth had the opportunity toadopt the European lifestyle that wasslowly encompassing the island chain.

Although able to speak and write inEnglish, she continued to speak only

Hawaiian, the language of her ancestorsand strictly followed their cultural practices.

The tribute was the first for Princess Ruth in theCenter's ongoing Monarchy Series, a cultural pro-gram to share Hawaiian history and traditions withvisitors and kama'äina. The year-round programcommemorates the lives and contributions ofHawai'i's greatest royal figures on their birthdates.

Center visitors are treated to these and other storiesat each of the monarchy tributes. It is an excellentopportunity for anyone to learn about Hawaii'srich past and build appreciation for contemporaryHawaiian issues.

Key to the Center's revitalization is the incorporation of'Ike Hawai'i, or all things Hawaiian. Construction tem-porarily eliminated the stage area between Buildings Band C that once hosted the Monarchy Tributes and cul-tural performances. A new cultural room has been con-structed on the second floor of Building C in roomC205 to accommodate these programs. The new room

also serves as a mini-museum to educate interested visi-tors about the ali'i, or royalty of Hawaiian history.'Ukulele lessons, kahili making classes and lei makingare held daily in the new room. Kupuna share theirskills and culture with visitors as part of the Centerexperience. Class schedules are found onRoyalHawaiianShoppingCenter.com
