FOCUS
“A Society’s competitive advantage will not come from how well its schools
teach the multiplication and periodic tables, but from how well they stimulate
imagination and creativity.” Albert Einstein
Assemblies—British Science Week
This year's Science Week has focused on the 150th anniversary of the Periodic
Table. In assembly Mrs Boyle looked at the invention of the Periodic Table and
the imagination and creativity that was needed by the scientists who worked on
it. In lessons students in Years 7-9 explored more ideas about the elements of
the Periodic Table and carried out some experiments that are not on the
curriculum. They investigated polymer balls, made slime and set light to
methane bubbles. Wednesday lunchtime students launched fizzy tablet rockets
and the girls from Hepburn won the inter-community competition.
EVENTS IN SCHOOL
BBFC Visit to Media
Last Friday, the Media and Film Department welcomed Lucy Brett from the
British Board of Film Classification. Year 12 and 13 students were presented
with case studies and the methods of regulating films in the UK which is a vital
aspect of their studies. The event was a resounding success.
Drama exam performances
On Monday evening, the A Level Drama students performed their practical
exam pieces to an external audience. The standard of the plays was
outstanding, leading the audience on an emotional journey as they experienced
a range of genres and styles. The Drama Department would like to thank all
those who have supported them to produce such amazing performances and
are so proud of every student whose hard work certainly paid off to produce
work that you would be pleased to watch in a professional environment.
Year 7 ‘Streetwise’ assembly
Year 7 watched a performance and engaged in discussion with a group from
‘Streetwise’, a KCC-supported programme which highlights the importance of
road safety. The performers touched on many situations with which our
students have to deal, surrounding issues concerning pedestrian safety.
Discussions around how each issue could have been prevented were lively and
considered.

Visitors from Holland
The Lek en Linge school from the Netherlands visited Hillview on Wednesday. They
have been coming to us for 4 years and are always delighted to spend a day with us.
Their students love to interact with ours and they thoroughly enjoy attending
lessons that they might not have back home. Thank you to all the staff who made them
feel welcome on the day.
Easter Concert
Last night’s concert was a resounding success of fantastic entertainment! The
programme was varied and this year featured some jazz. Thanks not only go to the
Music Department and performing arts staff supporting this event which included
refreshments and a tombola, but to our wonderful, enthusiastic students who were so
supportive of one another during the performances. It was a pleasure to see.
Hopes and Dreams Exhibition & Charity Auction
We raised £70.00 for the charity, ‘Mind’ and
parents and staff really enjoyed seeing the work
that the students have produced this year which
was exhibited on Thursday evening.
Treats for Year 11 students
Throughout this week, students were given a
variety of breakfast treats as a ‘thank you’ and
sign of appreciation for their incredibly
hard work leading up to and during their recent PPEs. We understand that the next
couple of months are going to be some of the most challenging months of their lives;
we wanted them to be reminded that we are there to support them as part of their
Squad19 .
VISITS/TRIPS
Art in Bexhill
Last Thursday, Year 12 Art students visited The De La
Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea and The Towner Gallery,
Eastbourne. Students were able to engage with
contemporary artworks from a range of cultures and
genres in order to develop their contextual knowledge
and provide them with sources of inspiration for their
own art practice.
Year 11 ‘Strive for 5’ Maths Seminar On Wednesday, 15 students were
selected and given the opportunity to
attend a conference in London along with
other schools from the UK. The
conference was an intensive revision
session to learn hints and tips to gain a
Grade 5 (or higher) in their exam.
The students were extremely well-
behaved and felt they gained a lot from
the experience. The inspirational speaker
at the end gave many of them food for
thought about their revision. Many are
now confident to solve a problem like the
one opposite. Can you?
Year 12 Health & Social Care students visit Hospice in the Weald
Students today had a tour and talk about the work the hospice offers and under-
takes. Students have been thinking about how their services cater to the whole
person by taking part in arts and crafts activities. It has been a chance to learn
about different career opportunities in Health and Social Care and excellent
practice for their up-coming work experience.
SPORT
Cheerleading Nationals
Last Sunday 96 students consisting of 3 squads of cheerleaders, accompanied by 5
staff, set off early to travel to Derby for the day’s competition. Our level 3 team,
"Lightning" won 1st place with an
absolutely stunning
performance. “Thunder”, our
level 2 team were also very
impressive, taking a well-deserved
2nd place. Our brand new team of
cheerers, "Sparks" impressed with
their first-ever performance,
taking an excellent 2nd place. All
of the girls were an absolute
credit to the school, supporting
each other and demonstrating
incredible athleticism and
sportswomanship throughout the
day.

Last Wednesday we competed in the above competition and our trophy winners were:

A special mention also to Emily Davis and Emily Dearsley who had to change their

U12 County Netball Tournament
On Wednesday Year 7 travelled to the U12 Rainham Kent Schools tournament. We
were one of only two non-selective, non-private schools in the tournament, which
consisted of 40 schools from Kent and South London. Our team were drawn against
a number of independent schools in a really tough pool of games. They played
some incredible netball and, although they didn't win any games, they did really
well. Lots to take forward to next year!
