Whanau – Through Unity is Strength

Psalm 133:1 How good and pleasant it is when brothers (and sisters) live together in unity!

1 August Issue: 18/13

Principal ’ s Ponderings…

Kia ora Parents. Welcome back to Hillview Christian School. I would like to extend a special welcome to the pupils and parents who have joined the Hillview community for the first time. Our prayer is that you will transition smoothly into our school community and genuinely feel part of our family. This week signals the beginning of Term 3 and we will have 540 pupils engaged in their learning across both campuses. It was wonderful to see the return of students on Monday. They seemed to be refreshed and eager to be back at school. I enjoyed watching many of them walking into the school grounds greeting their friends and telling each other about the various things they did while on holiday. During the holidays I travelled to China and was involved in running a mission’s programme for children. It also provided us with a wonderful opportunity to learn about how the Chinese live and work within their environment. For this editorial I would like to bring a few points to your attention:

1. Teaching Staff: This term we welcome the return of Mrs Elisabeth den Hollander. She will be teaching the New Entrant class that Mrs Harland taught in Term 1 and 2. Mrs den Hollander is located in Room 7 and should be meeting parents very soon. We also welcome Mrs Jo Calder who has won the position of Year 7-10 Science teacher. Mrs Calder has previously taught at two secondary schools before joining us at Hillview. This year she was teaching at Cashmere High School and has been teaching pupils from Year 9-13. She has a real passion for young people and loves to inspire their interest in science through experimentation and investigation. Mrs Calder is married to David and they both attend Riccarton Community Church.

2. Optional Parent/Teacher Interviews (Thursday 22 August): There should be a form arriving home today attached to the newsletter. This will inform parents of how to make an appointment with their child’s teacher if they wish to meet. Please ensure you communicate with your child’s teacher if you would like to meet with them or if they have requested a meeting with you (this was indicated in the interim report). These interviews are optional. See your child’s classroom teacher for further details.

3. PrEP: PrEP market day was held last term and it was a tremendous success. Thank you for supporting what proved to be a very worthwhile day. The pupils did extremely well preparing, marketing, and selling their product. One of the privileges for the Year 10 students is to make a decision on where they would like the profit from

market day to be allocated. They are able to choose a worthwhile cause. I think it is exciting that we can bless someone else through this educational venture and understand that God has given us resources to help others in need.

4. Production: This term is very busy with two productions being presented. The first production will be the Year 3-6, “Seussical the Musical”. This is only two weeks away and I would encourage you to buy your tickets very soon. Friday has almost sold out and Thursday night tickets are selling steadily. I visited one of the practices in the holidays and was most impressed at the gifting and ability within the room. The second production will be presented by the Year 7-10 pupils. This too is shaping up to be an event not to be missed – more details to come.

5. Cultural Day: On Friday 23rd

August we will be running our very first Cultural Day. The purpose is to recognise and celebrate the different nationalities that exist within our school community. Children and parents are encouraged to attend and dress up in their national costume. More details will be sent home soon.

6. Yearbook: This year we hope to publish our very first Hillview yearbook. The idea is being driven by a team of Year 9/10 pupils and their hope is for every family to receive one. The yearbook will be professionally bound and of good quality. There will be a cost for families and hopefully this can be heavily subsidised through advertising.

Many blessings Steve Frost (Principal)

Tips for Learning

Helping a Y7-10 child with reading (by Andy Vosslamber)

Once a child matures they need to see good role-models of reading and need to be encouraged to read a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction texts in order to help them build character as well as general

knowledge. Here are some suggestions about how you could go about this:

Source a good collection of biographies of people you would want your child to emulate. Read them yourself and talk about them with your child to encourage them to read them too. Our school librarian can help you with suggested titles.

Pupil Achievements

Congratulations Matthew Fairhall became the 8 years and under Canterbury Cross Country Champion in the holidays (and that was after being Player of the Day for our Year 3/4 Hockey team on the same day!)
