School Success: Five Steps of Self-Regulation

One of our School Success goals is to learn more about self regulation and how we, as educators, can support our students in strengthening and acquiring strategies they can use to regulate their behaviour and emotions. Self Regulation is an important skill for children to develop, contributing to overall school success and strengthening students’ social-emotional skills. Below, is five steps of Self-Regulation.

Step 1: Reframe the BehaviourWe are learning about our brain, what stress is, and how stress impacts behaviours, mood and energy levels. At school we are working on reframing the behaviour from “misbehaviour” to “stress behaviour”. Tip: When children are stressed, they need a calm adult.

Step 2: Recognize the Stressor We are learning about different kinds of stressors. Tip: Develop a common language and talk about how your own stressors affect your behaviour e.g., “When I don’t sleep, I can’t focus.” “When I’m hungry, I get cranky.” “When it’s too loud, I feel angry.” Stressors affect us all differently.

Step 3: Reduce the stress We are learning about ways that stressors can be reduced. Explore some research proven strategies to lighten the stress load: Quiet time, Playing outside, Fidget, Yoga, A Hug, Cycling, Breathing exercises, Music, SingingAlso, some strategies to restore energy:Sleep, walk, time with friends, daily rituals, feel good exercise, paint, meditate, time with animals, dancing

Step 4: Reflect: Enhance Stress-AwarenessI am learning about the difference between just being quiet and feeling calm. Tip: Instead of asking your children to be quiet when they are stressed help them feel calm by using one of the strategies in Step 3.

Step 5: Respond: Develop Personal Strategies to Promote Restoration and Resilience I am learning about ways that people deal with stressors and about ways that people fill their energy tanks back up when they’re empty. Tip: Share your strategies with your family members (e.g., “Your yelling is making me feel unsafe, so I’m going to take some quiet time. I will come back to you when I feel more calm.”)

Our Parent’s Guide to High School will provide you with a snapshot of what you need to know to help your teen be successful. World Teacher Day October 5th Since 1994, parents and students from around the world have celebrated World Teachers’ Day to commemorate the work of teachers and their contributions to society. On Oct. 5, take the time to let your child's teacher know he or she is truly appreciated. Thank your child's teacher and let them know they are making a difference.
