Welcome to the Hilleberg Tent Handbook 2013!

For many years, we have dis cussed the best way to make it as easy as possible for users to choose

their Hilleberg tent. This year, we are introducing the Hilleberg Label System, which groups our

tents into one of four Lab els, Black, Red, Yellow or Blue. Each label represents a blend of what

we consider the crucial performance attributes reliability, adaptability, ease of use, durability,

    comfort and low weight.

Black Label tents are all season models built with Kerlon 1800 outer tents, and that offer the

greatest strength and the highest degree of reliability, ease of use, and comfort. They are ideal

for all users and all situations.

Red Label tents are made with Kerlon 1200 outer tents, and are our lightest all season tents,

designed for those who need all season function but who need lighter weight more than overall

strength. These models still afford a high degree of our performance attributes, but, because of

their lighter materials, not as much as the Black Label tents do.

Yellow Label tents are our lightest tents, and are purposefully designed with lightest weight

as the highest priorit y. Built with very light Kerlon 1000 outer tents, they are suited for more pro-

tected terrain in warmer, snow-free conditions. And because they do use our lightest materials,

they sacrifice strength, ease of use and comfort for that lightest weight goal. Joining the Yellow

Label group this year is the extended vestibule Anjan GT, in both 2 and 3 person versions, both

of which are amazingly lightweight for so much space.

Blue Label tents are our specialized models. Each is built for a dis tinct purpose, and is built with

the materials most appropriate to that job.

Nothing changes in the construction or production of any of the tents themselves. This new system

is simply a way to help make it easier for users to select the right Hilleberg tent for their needs.

There are changes within the company, as well. Rolf has handed over the position of Managing

Director of Hilleberg the Tentmaker AB, the h ead offi ce in Sweden, to Gran Svensk. Gran is an

outdoor enthusiast who was previously with Recall, a global leader in information management.

We are excited about the energy and skill set that he brings to our growing company. Rolf will

remain involved in the company as part of the boar d of directors together with Renate, Petra and

Bo Hilleberg, who will continue as Chairman. Petra remains President of Hilleberg Inc, which

handles all business outside of Europe.

We hope you all have a fulfilling year, and we wish you many memorable tent adventures in 2013!

Sweden. Their marriage was the final, necessary ingredient in the mix

that has become Hilleberg the Tentmaker.

Before Renate, Bos fledgling company was primarily a forestry

equipment concern, with tent making as a hoped-for sideline. An avid,

lifelong outdoorsman, Bo was terminally frustrated with tents that re-

quired pitching the inner tent first and then covering it with a loose rain

fly that usually displayed the same properties as a kite in the wind. He

AdaptabilityYour Hilleberg tent must perform equally well across the entire spectrum of itsLabel category performance range. Thus, Black and Red Label tents must betrue all season ones. Specifically, Black Label models must be fully functional inboth the most and least demanding conditions. Red Label tents must be nearly asadaptable, but with the constraint of their prioritizing lighter weight over absolutestrength. Yellow Label tents, designed for warmer environments and for snow freetrips in less exposed terrain, must still adapt to hot or cool, rainy or dry, and windyor still conditions.

ReliabilitySimply put, you must be able to depend on your Hilleberg tent, whether its oneof our strongest, Black Label models, or one of our lightest, most minimal YellowLabel ones. We deliberately choose all materials, design elements and constructiontechniques outer tent fabrics, pole diameter and guy line placement, for example to exceed the performance parameters in each Label category.

The Hilleberg principles and backcountry shelters. Thats all we do, and from our

first tent in 1973, we have been driven by a single, simple point of refer-

ence: define the capabilities of the tent or shelter we envision, then build

it with the most advantageous balance of six essential principles for its

desired performance. We believe this method of design and construction

yields the highest performing backcountry shelter solutions available.

To outline a tents capabilities, we use our Label categories: Black

Label models are all season, all condition tents ideal for any user; Red

Label tents are all season models that favor light weight over absolute

Low weightMaking a reliable, adaptable and easy-to-pitch tent that is heavy doesnt meet our standards. But neither does creating a tent that is super light at the expenseof any of our other criteria. The key to our low weight principle is that we never consider the weight an end in itself, but as the mortar that binds our other criteriatogether. The development of both our lightweight Kerlon for Red Label tents and our even lighter Kerlon for Yellow Label tents produced a number ofchoices. In both cases, we opted for the ones that best balanced light weight and strength. We could have chosen a lighter fabric, but it simply would not have metour standards. Our ultimate aim is not to make the lightest tents, but, within their performance range, the lightest, strongest, most reliable, dependable, comfortable and durable ones.

DurabilityGiven its performance range of use, your tent must be able to withstand not onlythe daily rigors of your trips, but it must also last as long as possible. Our BlackLabel tents are designed and built to offer the greatest durability. Red Label andYellow Label models are made to give the best durability possible given their lighterweight materials. At the same time, we are very conservative, so we over-test andunderstate the specifications of all of our tents.

Ease of useNo matter how reliable a backcountry shelter is, if its complicated or difficult to putup, it plainly falls short. Every Hilleberg tent features linked inner and outer tents, which provides simultaneous pitching of both as well as the inherent simplicitythat allows for simple, straightforward set-up, even in bad weather. For our Blackand Red Label models, that means being able to pitch the tents easily, even in highwinds and blowing snow, in the dark, alone, and while wearing heavy gloves. OurYellow Label models, similarly, must be as uncomplicated to set up, by one person,at night, in rainy, blustery conditions as they are in calm ones.

ComfortComfort in the backcountry is not mere luxury; its basic livability. Thats why all

Hilleberg tents are built with bright, spacious interiors and venting solutions thatkeep air flowing in all weathers. It is also why all our tents have the small details thatturn a mere house into a home: well-placed interior gear pockets; clothes lines; andappropriately placed ring and toggle or clip and loop fasteners for open doors or vents.

strength; tents in the Yellow Label group prioritize the lightest weight,

and are geared for warmer climates and for use in snow-free times and in

more protected conditions; and Blue Label models are individually task

specific. Our performance principles the six attributes we consider

critical to superior performance are reliability, adaptability, ease of

use, durability, and comfort, all integrated into the optimal synthesis

for the intended performance range, at an appropriately low weight.

Thus, Black Label models offer the highest level of these qualities.

Since lighter weight is given higher priority in the Red and especially

in the Yellow Label performance blends, there is some sacrifice of reli-

ability, adaptability, ease of use and so on in these groups.

Design & manufacturing , has always been driven by problem-solving rather

than by creating something new. Bo Hilleberg established this protocol

40 years ago when he set out to build a tent that was easier to pitch in

challenging weather. And while his solution the linked inner and outer

tent construction was both novel and pioneering, the innovation was

the result the solution to the problem not the cause.

Today, Bo still heads our design team all of which are inveterate

all-season backcountry adventurers and he a nd they still see design

through that function-first, problem-solving lens. Bo and his team spend

a great deal of time in the tents, in all seasons, so many if not most of

our designs are literally born in the wilderness.

From there, solutions are sketched, drawn, and digitized in our CAD

system, and usable prototypes are created. Design then morphs into

development, and every detail and every tent goes through months

and oen years of testing before it goes into production.

Of course, designing a great tent creating an elegant solution to a

problem is one thing, but manufacturing it is another. To ensure that we

    Pre-production

We order materials for every production run manymonths in advance, and do exhaustive quality controltesting. This way, we ensure that we c an replace anyinferior component long before production begins.

We test every roll of all our fabrics for proper color, abrasion resistance, waterproofness where appro-priate, weight and hand properties. We also test asignificant sampling of outer tent and floor fabric rollsfor tear strength, and, in the case of outer tent fabrics, color consistency and color resistance to light. We alsosubject our tent floor fabrics to tapability tests alongwith the other, more standard tests.

In addition, we ensure that poles, zippers, fasten-ers, webbing and the like all meet our quality criteria.

    . & . Making the Tents

Fabric pieces are cut using pattern shapes. The rel-evant pieces including fabric, zippers, and all detailsneeded for each model are assembled, and passedon to the sewers.

    . Assembly & Quality Control

Every tent we make is completely set up and inspectedbefore it is shipped.

A Tent Inspector visually inspects both the innerand outer tents, puts the two together, inserts thepoles and puts on the ground straps. After erecting thetent he or she makes sure the ground straps have theproper tension, and opens the tent to check zippersand seams. After closing the tent up, he or she does

    another quality check and af

line runners. If at any point a the affected piece goes backfor correction.

Once the tent is certified adown. Poles and pegs are put sacks and bundled with the tFinally, an instruction bookletcontrol and hang tags.

Coated on both sides with a total of layers of % silicone, and treated for UV resistance during dyeing and

    Durable Water Repellent (DWR)

    Highly puncture & abrasion resistant.

NSL poles are nearly the same diameter as t he pole section itself, so the

poles are both significantly stronger and lighter than standard-style poles.

We select the optimal pole length(s) and diameter for each tent

model, and, if necessary, we pre-bend them. 9 mm poles go into both

our Yellow Label and our Red Lab el models because, like these models

Kerlon 1000 and 1200 outer tent fabrics, they offer plenty of strength at

a very low weight. We use stronger 10 mm poles with our Black Label

tents, since these are designed to handle the most extreme conditions.

Other materialsWe choose and evaluate the other materials on our tents zippers, guy

lines, pegs, and other fittings with the same rigor we apply to fabrics

    and poles.

We use YKK zippers, which we have found are the strongest and

    most reliable available.

Our proprietary guy lines are a blend of super strong Vectran fibers

and polyester, uniquely interwoven so there is no sheath to separate

from the core. They are very light and strong, absorb almost no water,

    and have negligible stretch.

All of our tents come with the appropriate aluminum pegs: extra ro-

bust yet quite light pegs with the Black Label tents; very light and strongpegs with the Red Label tents; and super light but still quite strong pegs

    with Yellow Label models.

Smaller fittings are equally well-considered. The simple polymer line

runners will hold tenaciously even on wet or frozen cord, and yet ca n be

easily adjusted. The polymer pole clips, pole tensioner cups, the metal

ladder lock buckles on pole and peg tensioners (we use metal because

these buckles must be as strong as possible) and the adjustable peg

loops are all immune to wet and cold, and can be operated easily, even

    while wearing bulky mittens.

    . . . . These are the

qualities we demand from all the materials that we use, and we have

rigorous standards that every material must meet. Such materials are

almost always more expensive, but they also yield a final product that

substantially outperforms one made with even slightly lower quality

materials. It is that kind of exceptional performance that is the hallmark

of Hilleberg tents. We are also constantly testing that performance, from

the strength and durability of our fabrics and poles to the reliability of

our zippers, guy lines, line runners and fittings. We use lab tests and

field tests, and we are always seeking better material solutions.

FabricsA tents fabrics are what protects you from the elements. In a Hilleberg

tent, those fabrics must perform to exacting criteria in a number of areas,

which we check in the lab, with standardized tests, as well as in the field.

Hilleberg Kerlon outer tent fabrics must meet a specific tear strength,

(see The Importance of Tear Strength on the next page), as well as a

minimum waterproofness rating, or hydrostatic head, and a minimum

    color resistance to light.

While the outer tents fabric keeps the elements out, the inner tent

fabrics must serve to keep the occupants as comfortable as possible. Our inner tent fabrics are very lightweight and both air permeable and

highly breathable, so they let moisture vapor escape while keeping actual

    water drops from penetrating.

Also vital to the tents performance are its floor fabrics. Ours are not

only extremely waterproof, but are also highly puncture and abrasion

resistant, and will stay flexible even in the coldest temperatures.

PolesA high performance tent must have a skeleton worthy of the strength

of its skin. We use DAC poles, because we believe they offer the kind of

superior performance that our fabrics do, and on most models, we use

the DAC Featherlite NSL poles. The section-connecting inserts on the

. It is that simple. The

stronger the fabric on your outer tent is, the less likely it is to tear because

of bad weather, rough handling, or inadvertent mistakes.

And Hillebergs Kerlon outer tent fabrics are strikingly strong. Kerlon

1800, used in our Black Label models, and Kerlon SP, used in some of

our Blue Label tents and in our tarps, have a minimum tear strength

    of 18 kg/40 lbs and 15 kg/33 pounds, respectively. Kerlon 1200, found

in our Red Label collection, has a minimum tear strength of 12 kg/26.5

lbs. Even the fami lys lightest member, Kerlon 1000, used in our Yellow

Label tents, has a remarkable 10 kg/22 lb minimum tear str ength. Even

better, this strength comes in impressively low weight packages. In real

life usage in the field, that combination of strength and light weight

translates into tents that, in our opinion, outperform those made with

    other fabrics.

The Silicone ConnectionIn 1975, Bo Hilleberg received a sample of a new, lighter, more water-

proof fabric. When Bo cut the edge of the sample and tried to tear it, he

couldnt. The fabric, Bo learned, was coated with silicone, rather than

the usual polyurethane. And while this new fabric was indeed very light

and waterproof, it was also exceptionally strong. It was exactly what Bohad been looking for, and our Kerlon fabrics were born.

Not all silicone-coated fabrics are created equal, however. Our Kerlon

fabrics are coated, on both sides, with a total of three layers of 100 percent

silicone. Certainly they are completely waterproof and very light, but our

process also imparts a strength to the base materia

magnitude greater than is possible with the more com

coating process. Perhaps more importantly, our co

are also far, far stronger than so-called siliconized

typically employ a coating mixture of silicone and o

still produce outer tent materials that are stronger

case of Kerlon 1800, 1200 and SP, that are strong

It also means that if your outer tent

does suffer a puncture, our high

tear strengths make it far less likely

that the puncture will develop into

is easily tough enough to handle the strain of polemovement when pitching or taking down the tent.We also make the sleeves wide enough to accom-modate two poles, which is a good option for themost extreme conditions. The raised profile of thesleeve makes it easy to insert the pole, and protectsthe seam against wear. And separate pole sleeveskeep the poles off the tent fabric for extra safety.

, is a major performance attribute, because

in a tent, comfort is not about luxury. Its the comprehensive measure of

a tents overall performance, since it includes everything from keeping

you dry when its wet and comfortable when its warm, to how much

room there is to sort gear or move around. We achieve such comfort

by considering seemingly small things in every aspect of every tent.

We favor double wall tents not only because they offer the greatest

ventilation and breathability possibilities and overall comfort but

also because they provide the greater confidence of having two layers

of protection between you and the elements.

We link the inner and outer tents and put the poles on the outside

so that a broken pole is less likely to compromise the tents integrity,

and so that the t ent goes up in one step. That single step pitching means

you can get out of the weather quicker, and stay drier longer. It means

your inner tent stays dry when you are setting up camp in wet weather.

It also means you can quickly put up your tent during, say, a midday

break, disconnect the inner tent, and youve got a dry, roomy shelter

    from wind and weather.

We make sure that all models are at least big enough for their intended

number of occupants and their gear. Our inner tents are designed with

as near vertical inner walls as possible to create the maximum usable

space and headroom without adding weight, and their doors figure

prominently in the tents ventilation system.

These considerations and those detailed here on these pages are

only some of some of the details found on our tents. Others include zipper

flaps to help protect the zipper; toggle and ring or pole clips for securing

rolled away doors in both outer and inn er tents; and pockets and either

a clothesline or loops for a clothesline in all inner tents.

one of four categories, or Labels, Black, Red, Yellow

or Blue, each representing a performance range based

on materials, construction or both. This grouping makes

it straightforward to see the differences

and so makes selecting the right Hillebe

    much easier.

The tents above are representative of each Label: every model in each Lab el has all the same characteristi cs that are listed here. We chose these models to show the diff erences between theLabels because they are, in many ways, each Labels version of the same tent.

In our all season, Black and Red Label models, the outer tent goes all the way tothe ground, and there is at least one main vent placed high up (two on Black Labelmodels), to allow rising warm, moist air to escape upward even if the tent is pitchedin dense grass, or sand, or dug down into snow. The vents are fully adjustable frominside or outside the tent, and the inner tent doors have no-see-um mesh panelscovered with zipper-adjustable fabric panels. As a result, Black and Red Labelmodels work well in all seasons.

Since our Yellow Label tents are not meant to handle snowy conditions, theirouter tents do not go all the way to ground, thus incorporating ventilation directlyinto their construction. In addition, large mesh panels, which cannot be covered, encourage constant air circulation. Part of the outer tent walls are also designed toroll back and expose the mesh for even more air flow. Yellow Label tents functionbest in warmer and/or snow free conditions.

, but there is a right tent for you.

Choosing that right tent is less about what you do on your adventures

climbing, hiking, hunting, sea kayaking, bicycle or motorcycle touring

and so on than it is about determining what your tent needs to be able

to do on those adventures. We advocate that you establish when, where,

and how you will most oen use your tent as well as any specific features

or performance attributes that are important to you, and that you assess

your general level of experience and confidence in your backcountry skills.

With this information, you can then determine the tent (or tents) with the

most suitable qualities for your needs.

Where & when you travelIn general, the more demanding the terrain and/or the weather you are

likely to encounter, the more advisable it is to have a more robust tent. The

stresses on a tent in the protected, forested terrain of the Southeastern

United States during the summer are very different than those in the

exposed expanses of Greenland in nearly a ny season. Typically, the more

exposed the terrain, the more severe the weather can become, in all seasons.

And while exposed certainly includes high peaks such as the Alps, the

Himalayas and the like, it also means almost any terrain where there is

little to mitigate fierce extremes in weather. The oen windy mountainsof Scandinavia, the windswept uplands and h igh deserts of the United

States, and the moors of the British Isles all fully qualify as exposed.

So, too, do most deserts the Gobi, the Sahara, t he Sonoran, among oth-

ers whose notoriously bad weather and sandy, gritt y environment puts

enormous strain on a tent. Add snow a nd ice to exposed think storms

in the mountains or high plains, or glacier travel in any weather and the

demands on your tent also increase significantly.

And the more remote your trips the farther you are away from the

possibility of fabric and zipper repair the higher safety margin you need

and the more durable your tents materials should be made of.

Such conditions and situations call for an all season tent, and for the

greatest durability and comfort and for extended trips in exposed terrain

AND snow use, heavy or prolonged desert use, and the like our Black Label

models are the best possible choice. These tents were created specifically

for handling the most challenging conditions, and their stronger materials

provide welcome extra insurance. And Black Label tents offer the most

versatility in any condition, from the most challenging to the mildest.

If, however, you are an all season traveler whose trips are less demand-

ing, but that may include some challenging terrain and weather, then our

Red Label tents are an excellent choice. And if you go out almost exclusively

in protected terrain, in warmer locales, or during the snow free parts of

the year, then our lightest weight, Yellow Label tents are good options.

How you travelDo you tend towards mobile journeys, where you ta ke down and pitch

the tent every day anything from extreme, long distance expeditions and

long distance hikes to short overnight trips close to home or do you take

short trips out of a base camp? Our tunnel tents offer outstanding space

to weight ratios, and so are well-suited to travelers who carry ever ything

all the time. For treks in the warmer seasons long distance or otherwise

our very lightweight, airy, Yellow Label models are superb, while fortrips where snow or other kinds of challenging weather conditions are

likely, our Red Label models are a better choice. For more demanding

expeditions, especially in harsh conditions a Greenland crossing, a high

mountain ski traverse, or a long hike in remote high country our Black

    Label models are ideal.

Those who establish a base camp mountaineers, high mountain

hunters and the like and do shorter trips from there, oen value a tents

static strength the ability to handle snow loading when le unattended,

for instance over other considerations. Our Black Label dome models

afford tremendous static load capabilities, and so excel as base camp tents.

Whats important to youIt is vital that any features or performance qualities that are important

to you are included in your selection process. You may place a premium

on light weight although getting trapped by that can be ill-advised (see

the lowest weight misconception below) or you may favor maximum

strength or extra comfort. You may prefer to share your shelter or go it

alone. Here are some of the factors you should consider:

: Black Label tents offer the most comfort, but

irrespective of the Label category, another option is to go up a size: a

Hilleberg 3 person tent has r oom enough for three people and their gear,

but it is very comfortable for two, with very little weight penalty.

:Some users simply prefer one type

over another, but each has its advantage. Our tunnel tents offer lighter

weight and more usable space. Our dome tents provide better static load

stability and can be a better choice in tough pitching conditions, but at

    the price of greater weight.

    - : We distinguish between

self supporting tents, where the vestibules need to be pegged out, and

free standing models, which have integrated vestibules and require no

pegging for pitching. The latter are oen better choices where there are

limited pitching possibilities, such as rock slabs and gr avelly soil.

: Our dual door/dual vestibule tents offer

greater convenience, more storage, and, in some cases, more venting op-

tions. Taller people oen find them more comfortable, since a two doorinner tent has more usable space. The downside: extra weight.

Self assessmentMany experienced users take super light gear into the backcountry all the

time, with great success. They make this choice on purpose, knowing that

they are giving up security, comfort and durability and t hey oen do it

Choosing the right tent for how you go into the backcountry will enhance all your adven-tures. Photo: Sonnet Ludwig. The lightest weight misconception

In choosing a tent, there are a few important truths. One is that while low

weight is clearly a big factor, selecting a tent or shelter solely because it is

the lightest in weight is rarely the best course. Another is that the lighter the

weight, the lighter the materials; and the lighter the materials, the less strength,

UV resistance and durability the tent offers. Also, the lighter the tent, the less

features it will have and so, consequently, the less comfort it will offer and

possibly the less security it will give you in adverse conditions.

If you need maximum strength for dealing with situations you will en-

counter, then you need it, and weight should become less of a priority. In any

situation, a simple tarp or a shelter such as our Blue Label Rajd is easily the

lightest solution, and many people use them quite successfully. But there is

a decided sacrifice in comfort, in resisting condensation, in durability, and in

simple strength. Riding out truly bad weather with such minimalist protection

can be miserable, if not downright dangerous. That is why, in all of our Label

categories, we have tried to find the best balance of strength and light weight

    for their intended performance range.

Rather than basing your decision on the weight of the tent, look instead

at everything you carry, and calculate what the REAL relative weight of a

tent is. For instance, for people, a Keron , which weighs . kg ( lbs oz),

equates to only . kg ( lbs oz) per person, which is light by any account.

Alternatively, two Nallo s weigh . kg ( lbs oz), and are neither as strong

nor as roomy for the weight as the Keron. Even for people, the Keron

weights just over . kg ( lbs oz) per person, still an impressively low weight,

especially given the comfort and security the Keron offers.

for families, hikers and regular users anyone wanting a tent that is excep-

tionally sturdy yet relatively light in weight, that will work for any situation, and

that will handle many years of use. Indeed, the Keron and Keron GT models

JTunnel design requires only four pegs forpitching, and the simple, single-opening,continuous sleeve and pole tensionerpole system is quick to pitch and re-markably stable.

JDual entrances and vestibules ensurethat one door can always be situated outof the wind and provide flexible entry/exit and storage options.

JOne standard and one extended vesti-bule in the Keron GT afford even moregear storage and comfort.

JAn optional footprint covers the entirearea of the outer tent, including the ves-tibules. It connects directly to the tent, and can be left attached during pitching.

JThe outer and inner tents can be usedseparately. Pitching the inner tent alone(below) requires optional pole holders(sold separately; see page ).

extended winter expeditions, to long or short rambles in mountains and/or

forests, to casual coastal jaunts, to relaxed overnight camping outings in your

    local recreation area.

And the GT version is a fine choice for dog mushers and cycle tourers

because its extra large vestibule allows plenty of storage space for sled or bike

equipment. In fact, you can park two bicycles in the Keron GTs vestibule!

THE NAMMATJ AND NAMMATJ GT are the masters of both high and low

country, equally suited for a high altitude expedition or a weekend walk in the

local hills. These robust all-season , all-arounders pitch quickly and easily, can

be taken down and moved in a flash, yet are far stronger and lighter than any

    other tent in their class.

Because of their superb weight to strength ratio and compact footprints,

both the Nammatj and Nammatj GT have become immensely popular with

extreme users, such as polar travelers looking to save weight, mountaineers

doing remote routes in the highest ranges, professional guides, and military

special forces teams. But these same characteristics are ju st as highly prized

by more regular users, as well: backpackers, cycle and paddle tourers, and

anyone needing maximum strength while reducing weight.

THE IDEA BEHIND THE TARRA was to create a

kind of hybrid tunnel dome model, with a tunnel

tents usable roominess and the static strength

of a dome. The resulting boxy inner tent has near

vertical walls, while the four pole structure boasts

five crossing points for an exceptionally strong

structure. Like its big brothers, the person

Saitaris and person Saivo, the person Tarra is

simple to pitch, makes a fine base camp tent, and

is fully capable of taking on the most challenging

weather. So, as with the Saitaris an d Saivo, the Tarra is often the choice of mountain cl imbers, and ski or

paddle tourers. But its simplicity, strength and roominess also make it quite popular with travelers who

take extended trips in remote, rugged locales, and with backcountry walkers, especially those who enjoy

    travelling in unruly conditions.

THE STAIKA IS ALL ABOUT SIMPLE but simple

does not by any means equate to sparse. Easy to

pitch, immensely stable, remarkably spacious, and

quite light, the Staika is an excellent go to tent for

any use where sturdy strength is the high priority.

We originally designed the Staika for paddle tourers,

who wanted a highly stable, fully free standing tent

for handling tricky pitching conditions. Since then, it

has garnered a large, loyal following amongst a wide

    assortment of other adventurers: mountaineers,

polar travelers, and ski tourers find it a supremel y stable base camp tent in all conditions; bicycle tourers

love its simplicity and completely free standing construction; and even regular backpackers find great

comfort in its roominess and relatively light weight as well as in its strength and stability.

Staika means high, or pointed in Sami, the language of the

    people indigenoustonorthern Scandinavia.

    RED LABEL

RED LABEL TENTS ARE BUILT for both

short and longer trips in generally less

demanding conditions in all seasons, suchas less exposed mountain terrain, forests

in both winter and summer, and the like, but where you still may encounter se-

vere situations. Their emphasis on lighterweight makes them less than ideal for

harsh environments and extended adven-tures in demanding conditions. They are,

however, quite capable of withstandingheavy storm conditions. Experienced

users sometimes choose these tents for

more demanding adventures becausethey knowingly accept the trade off of

strength for lighter weight.Red Label tents materials favor lighter

    weight over absolute strength:

JOur Kerlon outer tent fabric, which

has a kg/. lb tear strength.

    J mm poles.

J mm Vectran & polyester guy lines.

J Lighter weight inner tent and floor fabrics.

    JSmaller guage zippers.

JV-Pegs, our lighter, but still very strong,

    pegs.

Red Label tents are designed to maxi-

mize light weight while still retaining

appropriate strength, ease of use and

    comfort in all conditions:

JOuter tent goes all the way to the ground

    for all season protection.

JDifferent length poles in some models

    reduce weight.

JAt least one vent high up for ventilation

even if the tent is dug down into the snow.

J The interior is designed to offer roomi-

    ness at the lightest weight.

BECAUSE OF THEIR T WO DOOR/TWO VES TIBULE configuration, their

lightweight yet strong materials and their construction, the Kaitum and Kaitum

GT provide a stunning balance of super light weight, overall comfort and

high strength. Backpackers gravitate toward the Kaitums light weight and

remarkable roominess, as do paddle and bicycle tourers, who also appreci-

ate its small packed size. Hunters, winter campers, ski tourers, and climbers

favor the Kaitum because of its all-season strength as well as its low weight.

And taller users will find the Kaitu ms plentiful floor space, vertical entrances,

and vertical walls a roomy pleasure. Those same users opt for the Kaitum GT

when their trips demand the increased space and flexibility the extended GT

vestibule affords: with very little weight penalty, the larger vestibule offers

considerably more space for both gear storage/sorting and food preparation.

The extended GT vestibule also has two entrances, one on the side and one

up front, on the opposite side , offering both more entry/exit options. And by

rolling back the front section of the extended vestibule, you create a ful l tent-

width covered porch deep enough to keep all but the worst weather away

    from the inner tent door.
