Hill Center Regional Education Model Year One Woodcock-Johnson III Evaluation Results
Brunswick County Schools2009-2010
Presented by:Tamara Walser, Ph.D., Lead Evaluator & Emily Grace, M.Ed., Project CoordinatorThe University of North Carolina Wilmington
Evaluation Method
• Students were pretested in Fall 2009 and posttested in Spring 2010
• Individual assessments using four subtests of Woodcock Johnson III Achievement Test
(WJ-III)• Raw scores were converted to age-referenced
standard scores to measure growth
Description of Subtests
• Letter-Word Identification: List of individual words for student to read aloud
• Passage Comprehension: Short sentences containing a blank for student to read and supply appropriate word
• Reading Fluency: Short sentences for student to read quickly and identify as true or false
• Word Attack: List of “nonsense” words for student to read aloud, measuring phonics skills
What are Standard Scores?
• Age-referenced standard scores account for expected academic growth.
A student who makes expected growth would have the same standard score at the pretest and posttest. An increase in a standard score indicates greater than
expected growth; a decrease indicates the opposite.
• The AVERAGE standard score for the WJ-III is 100 where 90-110 is the average range.
Next Steps…For the 2009-2010 Annual Evaluation Report:• Will analyze pre- to post-implementation North Carolina End-of-Grade Reading Assessment scores•Will analyze HillRAP student attendance data•Will analyze HillRAP teacher implementation proficiency dataFor the Longitudinal Evaluation:• Will conduct WJ-III posttesting in spring 2011
