The fifth annual “Procession of the Species Parade” in Albany on Saturday, April 21st is a perfect event for children and adults to have fun and celebrate the natural world. The Procession brings families, neighbors, businesses, schools, organizations, and all interested people together in a colorful parade that will serpentine in downtown Albany for several blocks. People of all ages will dress up as their favorite animal, tree, flower, or other natural element. The Procession of the Species Parade originated in Olympia, Washington, in January 1995 when a group of local residents wanted to organize an event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Earth Day. In 2007, Albany residents Tiah Swanson and Patty Evans were looking for a way to unite people in Albany and the outlying communities with an event to honor and respect the natural world. They were impressed by the success of the Olympia Procession and in 2008 the Albany Procession began bringing hundreds of people together. Participants are asked to use art and music avenues when creating their “species”. Think of your favorite animal, creepy crawly insect, wiggle-waggle fish, picturesque plant or colorful bird. Create a costume, mask, puppet, flag, musical instrument, or whatever you might imagine. You can even take part in a fabulous pre-parade workshop on Saturday, April 14th from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the Albany Public Library at 2450 14th Avenue S.E. This FREE family workshop is sponsored by the Willamette Valley Puppeteers and will provide materials and assistance to prepare for the Procession Parade. The only guidelines are: No written words, motorized vehicles, or live animals Come celebrate and enjoy the activities on Saturday, April 21st starting at 10:00 a.m. beginning at 4th Avenue and Broadalbin in front of the Linn County Courthouse. Procession of the Species BY LOUIE WHITE POST 10 MEMBER July fourth, 2010 started out like any day. Reality sat in about the time I turned off Pacific Boulevard in Albany to go to the Lions Club Breakfast at Eleanor Hackleman Park. I watched the home of American Legion Post 10 and Unit 10 Auxiliary settle into a pile of ashes at the hands of an arsonist. Inside that building were historical items and artifacts that were hard won by those Veterans that helped to keep us free for all of our lives. Hopefully, we will now complete a new home and begin the process of documenting once again the rich history of service that is the American Legion. Throughout the years, Post 10, along with the Unit 10 Auxiliary, have been an incredible team. Together we have provided much needed services to the community and to the Veterans in the hospitals in Roseburg and White City. We hosted numerous banquets and parties for local veterans and their families, worked to instill patriotism in our schools, and honor local law enforcement officers, firefighters and of course our local Veterans. With the completion of our new post home, we will have a banquet capacity of 500 and will be able to host multi-gatherings at the same time. We will have the potential to provide services to the community we never thought possible. The realities of the fire that deprived us of our home begin to set in very early on. The hoops we had to jumped through began to consume our insurance settlement. The delays as we waited decisions were expensive delays. Throughout all of this, we have been able to occupy a temporary home on First & Lyon in downtown Albany in order to have a “command post” for our membership. Over the years of our existence here in Albany, Post 10 has been a leader in the development of the community. We brought the first stoplight to town. The first ambulance. We brought about the Albany Municipal Airport, and the list goes on. We were on the cutting edge of the Armistice Day observance which began with a handful of WWI Veterans and a very few onlookers. That event eventually grew into and continues to be the biggest and best Veterans Day celebration in the nation. The Legionnaires and the Post 10 Auxiliary and the community as a whole are the victims here. We have come a long way towards completing our new home. Unfortunately, we are about $400,000 short of the funds needed for completion. Until that goal is achieved, we will have an empty shell. We deserve better than this, as does the entire community. Please help us to make Post 10 the command center once again come Veterans Day 2012. This month we give a special salute to Dena Burian Blacklaw. Dena came to SafeHaven Humane Society as a volunteer over 2 years ago. I am not sure how we survived without her prior to her joining our volunteer team. She has been an amazing addition.

Dena goes above and beyond when it comes to helping within the community; especially SafeHaven. She is often the first one to arrive to help (even before staff) and typically doesn’t leave until the last person is gone. She helps with all of the Community Outreach and Adoption events and our big fundraisers.

Dena is the coordinator for the Senior Meals on Wheels delivery program. She also delivers pet food to the Albany, Brownsville, Sweet Home, Lebanon and Mill City Senior Meal Sites, as well as the Lebanon Soup Kitchen site as needed. Dena recently took over the pet therapy visits. She travels with her dog “Spirit” and other SafeHaven dogs to several nursing homes in the area.

Dena owns Unique Property Management and has a

great rapport with all of her owners and tenants as well. She is well respected in her business and community alike.

She puts in countless hours at SafeHaven (over 100 every month) and is always helping strangers on the

street. I have seen her secretly pay for someone’s meal at a nearby table at a restaurant, (usually an elderly person or a soldier) just because she knows it would make their day. She is the first one to donate to a charity, food bank or holiday coat drive. I have literally seen her take the coat off of her back and hand it to someone on a winter evening and not think twice about it.

Most people have good hearts and posses one or two of these

traits. Dena has them ALL. She is the most amazing person you will meet. If you haven’t had the pleasure of knowing her, this is someone you want in your life. She will make your day, EVERY DAY! She is just that kind of woman! Thank you Dena for your big heart!

(Editors note: If you have someone you would like to nominate for a Good Job column, please type up 300 to 350 words about your nominee and email along with a photo of the individual or group to: [email protected].)

Every neck has a natural curve which is vital to the overall health of your spine. In the good old days there wastherewasonly one common waytolosethiscurve and that was through a trauma like whiplash. Now there is a new high techwaytolosethis curve and it is probably sitting in your pocket right now. That’s right…. It’s your phone.

According to a Pew Internet study performed in September 2011, 83% of American adults own cell phones and 73% of them send and receive text messages. Those 18-24 years old average as many as 100 text messages per day! Some people even prefer texting to talking on the phone.

All of this texting, Facebooking, and Angry Birding happen with the phone down around navel level. To see the screen the neck must be flexed. Flexing the neck and holding it in that position straightens the curve in your neck over time. Ligaments and muscles become stretched and don’t just snap back to their normal shape and length. Basically you are left with a neck sprain which is caused by postural stress. Losing the curve in the neck also increases the compressive forces on the mid and low

back. The new term that has been coined for this condition is called “Text Neck”.

It seems silly but the damage canbeseriousand carry lasting implications. Some common symptoms include: Neck Pain, Upper Back Pain, Headaches, Numbness/Tingling to the arms or hands, Arm Pain, Elbow Pain, and more. Ultimately this

condition can lead to an early onset of arthritis in the spine, nerve damage and damage to the discs between the vertebrae in the neck.

The best way to prevent Text Neck is to limit the amount of sustained neck flexion you are doing every day. This may mean talking more and texting less. Limit the amount of time you spend using apps on your smart phone. Another useful practice is to hold your phone up in front of your face to keep from having to flex your neck. Sadly, this means you may have to stop texting while you drive so that you are not blocking your view of the road with your phone (hint, hint). Texting while laying on your back or stomach is a good way to avoid needing to flex your neck excessively.

In the United States, 99.5% of adults over the age of 40 years had chickenpox as children and recovered without incident. However, they are vulnerable to a shingles outbreak later in life.

Interestingly, the virus that causes chickenpox, herpes zoster, remains in the body even after the disease has resolved. The virus goes “underground” and resides in our nerve cells. While we are young and healthy, the body’s immune system keeps the virus in check. You may think of the virus as being “contained” by our immune system’s “troops”. As we age, our immune system becomes less robust; we experience a gradual “troop” drawdown. This process usually goes unnoticed unless our immune system is presented with a challenge, (i.e. illness, injury, surgery, chemotherapy etc.) We now have a new battlefront that “troops” must respond to, which leaves fewer “troops” in the rear to “contain” the herpes zoster virus. The virus breaks free causing a characteristic rash (shingles). This is a simplistic explanation for why shingles occur most often in the elderly and typically shortly after some sort of other medical issue has arisen. It also helps one understand why a person may experience multiple herpes zoster outbreaks in their lifetime.

The severity of a shingles outbreak is unpredictable. Symptoms may range from merely an irritating rash

to excruciating pain. Keep in mind that the virus is associated with nerve tissue, so the pain may travel or “shoot” along nerve pathways. The pain has been described as: burning, throbbing, sharp, or stabbing, and can

persist for months or even years after the rash resolves. Up to 25 per cent of patients will have ocular involvement. The virus can cause chronic eye disease and or vision loss.

An outbreak of herpes zoster can greatly affect one’s quality of life. The severity may be such that you can no longer drive, or properly care for yourself. Fortunately, a vaccine has been developed to help prevent the life-changing effects of shingles. The vaccine does not rid the body of the zoster virus; rather it fortifies our defensive “troops” to keep the virus under control. Even if you have already had the shingles, you may be immunized to help prevent a future outbreak. The US Center for Disease Control now recommends being vaccinated against

Every year when spring rolls around the auto industry typically enjoys a surge in business that lasts well through the summer and into the fall. Of course people buy cars year round, but it’s much more enjoyable to shop for cars and test drive them when the sun is shining. Some people enjoy the experience of finding a vehicle and negotiating the purchase of said vehicle…others not so much. If you’re somebody that isn’t comfortable with the process or would like to minimize your trepidations before shopping here are some simple things you can do to prepare yourself:

Use your computer: it’s much more effective in terms of cost and time to shop online. You can look at specific manufacturer’s websites, dealerships, or other sites such as Autotrader.com. Use a search engine such as Google or Bing to assist your search if you know specifically what you want.

Once you have narrowed your search to vehicles that you like, find out what you should be paying for any particular vehicle by visiting edmunds.com, nada.com or kbb.com. These sites will allow you to familiarize yourself as to what price ranges you can expect to pay whether you are purchasing through a dealership or a private party.

If you have a trade-in, make sure you know the book value of your own car so that you know what to expect a dealership

to give you for a trade credit.

Utilize people that do this all the time: Visit your credit union or bank and get pre-approved. I recommend this before you start looking at vehicles so that you know exactly what price range

you should be looking in according to a payment you can afford. You’ll also know exactly what interest rate you qualify for and you can also pick an ideal date for your monthly payment. You can rely on the dealership to find financing but you’ll avoid, potentially, multiple inquiries to your credit and financing with an unfamiliar financial institution by getting pre-approved. Once pre-approved you can expect the process of purchasing to be expedited…all you have to do is pick out the car and come to an agreement on the price with the dealership.

Know that you can purchase through a private party with a pre-approval as well. Talk to your loan officer and they will explain the process.

Buying a vehicle can and should be a fun, rewarding experience! To avoid buyer’s remorse make sure to utilize

Car Buying 101

What would happen to your lifestyle if you were sick or hurt for a year or more and could not work? Can you afford to retire right now?

Most of us do not want to think about being sick or hurt. Do you know anyone who has had a heart attack? Cancer? Or diabetes? These are leading causes of disability in the United States. They are also main causes of partial disability or limitations in daily living for almost 1 in every 10 Americans today.

A disability isn’t always caused by a devastating accident or illness. It can mean a health crisis that takes away your ability to earn a living as you always have. At Life Happens web site Alysia Lim’s father, found out how Disability Insurance protected him. Dr. Lim had an aneurysm and after surgery he was no long able to continue working as an emergency room physician. Dr. Lim had prepared for the unforeseen with adequate amounts of insurance including disability insurance. Now Dr. Lim works as a professor at a local college, but his drop in salary has not changed the way the Lim family lives. His disability insurance has supplemented his income, allowing the Lim’s to stay in the dream house they built

and to maintain their lifestyles.Bill Reid was 32 when a horrific car

accident nearly claimed his life. He had to relearn how to walk and talk and short-term memory loss had made it impossible for him to return to work. Fortunately, Bill had purchased individual disability insurance and had additional coverage through work, which has enabled him to maintain the same

lifestyle ha had before the accident. A disability can strike at any age. At

24, Ashley Tew was just beginning her dream job as a pediatric nurse when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and went on disability leave. Disability insurance helped pay for her medical bills and other expenses. Since Ashley couldn’t be on her feet for long periods of time, she couldn’t return to her previous job. Through the return-to-work program that her insurance company offered, Ashley got vocation-rehab services as well as job-seeking assistance, which helped her land a desk job with her previous employer.

Replacing a water heater is not as easy as it used to be. The choices used to be electric or gas and how many gallons. Now, it can take some research to choose the best investment. Some options use less energy, or may qualify for tax credits or energy rebates, some provide limitless hot water, and some have special requirements. The water heater options explored below are standard upright, tankless, and heat pump.

The standard high-efficiency upright water heater is designed to hold water in a tank and heat it to a set temperature. Energy saving technology has been incorporated into the unit to increase its operating efficiency, like a control board that can “learn” when there is no hot water demand (middle of the night) and it will let water cool during these times. Then, before times when hot water is normally used (morning showers), it will heat water up. These units are available in electric or gas and are about 7% more efficient than standard water heaters.

A tankless gas whole house water

heater will only heat water on demand. This unit is about 30% more efficient than a standard gas water heater. However how much energy is saved depends on how the family uses water. Studies have shown when hot water is limitless there is a tendency to use more hot water, and no energy is really

saved. If consumers regulate the use of water they can seeareturnoninvestment in four

to five years. These units often last ten years or more and require very little maintenance. Tankless can be a very good investment in the right situation.

Heat pump water heaters use electricity to heat water the same way a heat pump heats air in the home. It functions as a standard water heater, heating a tank of water to a set temperature. It also uses a control board for timing hot water demand like the high efficiency unit. The heat pump technology makes operating this unit about 55% more efficient than a standard water heater. It does have space requirements and venting requirements, but even with the added costs of installation, the return on investment is 2-3 years. This solution

Need a Water Heater?let’s examine some options.

A living room sofa is likely to outlive a lot of things-from the family car and microwave to the kids’ trendy hairstyles. Most people keep a sofa from six to 15 years before buying something new. In a recent survey by Furniture/Today, a leading trade publication, more than half of consumers in the market for a new sofa were replacing one that was ten years old or more. If you are one of those consumers-or soon will be-here are some tips on how to choose your next sofa wisely.

read the fine printBefore you buy, be sure to read the

fine print in the warranty. Note what is included and how long the company guarantees the product. The duration of this warranty reflects the collection’s quality craftsmanship.

Mainstream furniture manufacturers are bringing the fashion-forward looks consumers see in magazines and designer showrooms onto retail floors-but at much more affordable prices.

know what’s on the inside There are a number of high-end

standards that mean more than just good looks.

Down, for instance, is a great indicator of quality and comfort. Down-proof ticking

used in pillows and seat backs adds a desirable “crinkle” effect upon sitting.

Choosing down-blend seat cushions will provide an even more luxurious sit. Soft padded outside arms and back also add to

the overall comfort of the piece.

note what’s on the outside

If you want a sofa to make a great visual impression for years to come, look for the following cues:

Deep decking (the fabric under the seat cushions) to ensure that only the sofa’s primary fabric is revealed when sitting. Six inches is ideal.

Welting (the cotton cord covered with fabric that is sewn along the seams of the upholstered frame and cushions) that is straight and free of puckers.

Skirts that hang smoothly with crisp corners.

Fabric patterns that are matched seat to cushion to back to frame.

make a statementThe more your new sofa speaks to

your personal style, the more likely it will stand the test of time. At Rife’s we suggest starting with a classically designed frame and adding personal flair with

Life FaithMore Sweet TemptationsTen Tortured Words

One of the best selling books on our shelves lately has been “Ten Tortured Words” by Stephen Mansfield and at the next Christian Chamber meeting we will review this book and discuss its importance today especially with the upcoming election.

From the book’s jacket:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”

Few Americans understand the miracle in world history these ten words represent. For the first time in human experience, the legislative power of a nation was forbidden from legislating the conscience of man. For over 150 years, religion flourished, institutions of faith multiplied, and revivals transformed whole communities. The elected representatives of the people often called for days of prayer, recognizing that religion is essential to national character.

So what happened? Why is it that today a cross-shaped memorial

or a religious symbol in a city seal is considered a violation of the Constitution? Why are pastors

threatened if they speak out about politics and children kept from even asking about religion in the public schools?

Ten Tortured Words separates historical fact from fiction,

illuminating the events and personalities that shaped the writing of the Establishment Clause. In his straightforward, award-winning style, cultural historian Stephen Mansfield

interprets the societal shifts that have led to the current rift between religion and politics, and takes a surprising look at what lies ahead for

freedom of religion in American.Special Promo: A Free copy of Ten

Tortured Words Valued at $25.99 will be there for every one that attends the next Christian Chamber meeting at Novak’s on April 9 starting at 7:30am!

I love Kaiser rolls! More than 50 years ago, my beloved Grandpa would take me to a little European bakery on a side street in New Brunswick, N.J. And give me a choice- a buttered Kaiser roll or a dozen chocolate-tipped spritz cookies. The Kaiser roll won hands down every time. Besides, I knew he’d buy the cookies anyway.

As a classic baker I have to say: real Kaiser rolls are NOT stamped, as in most bakeries, they are FOLDED!

Kaisersemmel originated over 500 years ago and were made to resemble the Germanic crown of Frederick V. They are made from a lean dough, no fat and very little sugar and do not last well, a one-day bread like French baguettes. However, they freeze perfectly, so you are only 30 seconds from a treat.

Proof 2 tsp yeast in 2 C warm water with 1 tbsp sugar about ten minutes, or until very foamy. Add 2C flour and 1 tsp salt and mix well. Add enough flour to make a medium dough and let rise

to double. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and divide into pieces about the size of a small apple. Form into smooth rounds and let rise about 10 minutes. Flatten the dough and roll out about ¼ inch thick. Using the diagram

start folding from the left side. First fold-left side to center. Press at center. Second fold-place your finger at the X on the fold and bring the dough over your finger to the center and press. Continue to fold and press firmly until the last triangular fold is in place. Trace the diagram onto a piece

of paper and practice a few times, it gets easier.

Place the folded rolls onto a piece of parchment paper, upside down, to rise. This helps keep the folds together. Let rise about 30 minutes and transfer to a lined baking sheet. I like to give the center one more good press just before baking. Glaze with 1 egg white beaten with 1 tbsp water and sprinkle with poppy seeds or sesame seeds. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 350 degrees about 20

I remember when we were kids and would get so excited for Mother’s Day because it meant we would be eating creamy, sweet homemade ice cream! The excitement would begin as soon as I knew that we were stopping at a local family’s farm that sold cream. No electricity, no phone, but the best cream in the world! They skimmed it right off the top of the fresh milk and sold it to my folks in a mason jar. Buying that cream meant we were going to make ice cream (for Mom of course)!

We would go home or to my grandparents farm and my mother would get out the hand held mixer and begin beating the eggs (she loved to help). She would pour the wonderfully thick creamy mixture into the tub of the ice cream maker and then it was my dad’s and my turn! I was a very important part of making ice cream, you see. My dad would pack the ice and salt around the tub and then he would put a folded up towel and a folded up quilt over the top of the cranking mechanism. My job was to sit on that and keep it in

place while he cranked. At some point we got an electric ice cream freezer. I was probably too old to be interested

in “helping” any more but eating ice cream continued to be a Mother’s Day tradition! What I can tell you for sure is that I love ice cream and so does Mom!

So this year when Mother’s Day rolls around, make it special by taking

her to your local Coldstone Creamery where we make ice cream the old fashioned way! Ice Cream is more than a food, it’s a feeling, it is memories it draws families together and it makes your heart soar! If you can’t make it in on Mother’s Day, come on in and we’ll make you a special Mother’s Day cake or get some of her favorites made up and take it home!

Being a Mother myself I can tell you I LOVE it when my husband and kids remember the little things and the main thing I love to do on Mother’s Day is spend time with my family and what better than to add a little Coldstone to that picture! I can’t wait and from my house to yours Happy Mother’s Day Moms!

Prior to the 16th century, cauliflower was available exclusively in Italy. It eventually made its way to other European countries and was brought to North America in the late 1600s. Almost all cauliflower that is grown in the United States comes from the Salinas Valley in California. It usuallyiswhiteincolorbutcanactuallybeorange, green, or even purple.

Cauliflower is a member of the cabbage family - in fact the name cauliflower actually means “cabbage flower”. It is available year-round, but is especially plentiful in the spring and fall.

Cauliflower is high in vitamin C, vitamin K, and folate. Just 1 cup of cauliflower a day will provide you with 70% of your daily vitamin C requirements. Enjoying raw cauliflower will give you the highest nutritional benefits. If you choose to serve it cooked, lightly steaming it is the best way to retain the maximum nutrients.

When purchasing cauliflower, look for a creamy white color. A cauliflower head should feel heavy and compact. Be on the look out for brown spots on the florets (the

edible flowering portions of the cauliflower head) which indicate it is beyond its nutritional peak. Also, avoid heads with smudging or speckling which is caused by insects.

It is best to use cauliflower promptly after purchasing it. By wrapping cauliflower loosely in a paper bag, it can last 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator.

To prepare cauliflower to eat, fill a bowl with cold water and add 3 tablespoons of lemon juice. Remove the outer leaves and discard. Use a knife to cut around the underside of the head to remove the core. Detach the florets where they join at the center. Submerge the florets in the lemon water for at least 10 minutes and then rinse.

A common Italian way to serve cauliflower is to first clean and then dry the florets. Place a large skillet on the stove top on medium heat. When the pan is warm, add a little olive oil. Once the oil is warm, add 2 smashed cloves of garlic and cook until the garlic are fragrant, approximately 30 seconds. Quickly add the cauliflower florets to the pan and cook until they are nicely browned. While it is cooking, mix together 3 tablespoons of tomato paste, 2 tablespoons of water, and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice in a small bowl. When the florets are finished cooking, add the tomato paste mixture and toss with the cauliflower in the skillet until the sauce is warm and evenly distributed. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese (if desired, a little crushed red pepper can be added to taste). This is an easy and delicious Italian dish.

Cauliflower is a vegetable that is often overlooked

because of its mild flavor, but it pairs with many other foods. Flavors that best compliment cauliflower are those of parsley, garlic, lemon, hollandaise sauce, butter (especially brown butter), bread crumbs, and Cheddar, Gruyère or Parmesan cheese.

One of my favorite ways to serve cauliflower is to enjoy it roasted. It brings out a sweet and caramelized flavor. The amazing soup recipe below is from my cookbook, A Taste of Italy… My Favorite Soups, which can be purchased at Pizza King.

ruBy leWiS,PizzA KinG

DirectionSPreheat oven to 425˚F.In a large bowl, toss the cauliflower, potatoes, garlic,

and onions together with the oil. Place the vegetables on one or two baking sheets.

There should be a generous amount of room around each vegetable for the roasting process. If they are crowded on the baking sheet, they will not develop the delicious depth of flavor that roasting creates. Stir the vegetables once or twice during the roasting process so that they cook evenly. Remove the vegetables from the oven just as they begin to brown.

To a large stockpot, add the roasted vegetables, broth, tomato juice, and pepper flakes. Simmer for 35 minutes. Remove from the heat and purée half of the soup in a blender. Fill the blender half full and allow the soup in the blender to cool for 10 minutes. Always use caution with hot liquids in the blender; place the lid on and place a folded towel on top of the blender lid so that the hot steam will not burn your hand. Pulse the blender a few times before puréeing. Add the puréed vegetables to the stock pot and warm. When ready to serve, adjust the salt and add pepper to taste. Serve in warmed soup bowls and serve with Parmesan cheese and croutons.

tips for Successfully overseeding a lawn

Now is the best time to seed or over seed a lawn in the Pacific Northwest. If you have decided that your lawn needs help this year, but maybe you don’t believe you need to replant an entirely new lawn, overseeding may be just what you need. Overseeding a lawn can be an effective technique in achieving healthier grass. Here are some tips will help your lawn project be successful.

Preparing your lawn for overseeding

• Mow the grass as short as your mower will cut. Almost scalp the grass.

• If you have time, aerate the lawn. Aeration will improve oxygenation, which will help the new grass seed grow faster and more robust.

• Top-dress the yard with a compost/topsoil blend. This will help incorporate organic matter into the lawn, improving soil structure, which will, in turn, improve grass germination and long-term health.

• Water the grass thoroughly-giving it at least one inch of water a day after top-dressing. This will put

waterintothesoilsothat as the grass seed starts to germinate, ithasthenecessarymoisture to do well. How to achieve even coverage of Seed

Once the yard is prepared for overseeding, use

these techniques to achieve even coverage of the lawn with the grass seed.• Calibrate your spreader-you do this to

set the spreader drop rate according to your stride. How fast you walk will influence the coverage. Your spreader will have instructions for doing this.

• Then, fill the spreader with half of the seed and spread the seed evenly walking in one direction. Next, fill the spreader with the other half of the seed and overseed walking perpendicular to the previous direction. Whether you overlap each row slightly depends on whether you are using a drop spreader or a broadcast spreader. With drop spreaders, you do not overlap-but you do precisely line up with your row. Broadcast spreaders require overlapping the throw pattern by

Once again, I’m bringing out my high horse and climbing on. This is the perfect time to plant a perennial herb garden. Fresh herbs are a huge flavor boost to any good recipe. Once established, the plants are practically care free and they last nearly forever- my herb garden was established 22 years ago and it’s still going strong.

First, I recommend a good upright rosemary. Tradition says that when planted by a doorway, it keeps out evil. Over the years, mine has grown so large I occasionally have to chop my way to the house, but my neighbors all appreciate the bounty.

At least one Mammoth sage plant. Your turkey and family will thank you.

A good English or French thyme. Check that it is a culinary variety, as there are many ornamental types that aren’t tasty. Look for small lavender flowers.

At least two oregano plants. Make sure they are Greek or Sicilian white-flowered varieties. They have the best flavor.

Horseradish- one plant. The root is best in fall and winter, but the leaves, finely chopped add zest to salads. There are beautiful variegated types available.

As many chives as possible! Plant regular and garlic chives. Garlic chives have flatter stems and white flowers, instead of the usual purple. The flowers are edible and they look cool. Remember, eggs love chives!

Saffron, the most expensive spice, is ridiculously easy to grow. The corms are available in August and September and they will have flowers the following year. I have never had any pest or disease problems, but you do have to beat the slugs to the flowers!

And of course, parsley. You can never grow enough parsley. Parsley is a biennial so it just edges into a perennial garden because it does reseed readily.

Now that the long-timers are taken care of, you can start the annual list.

Don’t forget basil, cilantro, borage, tarragon and angelica! The list could go on for pages, but it’s your garden, so plant to your cooking style!

Check that the plants are sturdy, compact and not too pot-bound.

With these guys up and producing, you will never have to resort to expensive packets in the produce section, and the taste they will give to ordinary dishes will have you hooked. Happy Herbing!

Elmer’s... A Lot More Than Pancakes

BY ricK roGers

When Walt and Dorothy elmer opened their first restaurant in 1960 it was a pancake house featuring their own special batter made from the family’s secret recipe. the legend goes that the batter recipe was so secret it was kept locked away in a safe. since those early days, elmer’s has expanded throughout the northwest and features an extensive menu. elmer’s came to Albany about 30 years ago and has become a local institution serving everything from steaks to the traditional breakfast served all day long. that includes those famous pancakes still from Walt and Dorthy’s secret batter recipe from all those years ago.

two years ago the Albany elmer’s franchise was taken over by David and Doneta thomason of Grants Pass, owners of several other elmer’s franchises. they immediately set out to update the look and feel of the Albany restaurant which is now operated under the watchful eye of general manager and long-time employee shelly Matteson. shelly says the extensive remodeling of the restaurant gives it a homey, welcoming family feel and the friendly staff is ready to serve you no matter what time of day you visit. shelly also credits her management team for the restaurants success

including Melinda Butler who manages the front of the house and Jeffrey Barksdale who manages the kitchen. she credits them with helping the Albany restaurant in receiving three 100-percent health inspections in a row.

Besides the complete full menu with something to please everyone, elmer’s also offers some of their most popular items on a “lighter fare” menu for children and seniors who want smaller portions. shelly points out that elmer’s goes out of the way to use northwest products in their kitchen keeping everything as fresh and local as

possible. shelly says that besides offering great food, elmer’s is also on the forefront in helping out with fund raising efforts for local schools and other non-profit groups. Located at 2802 s.e. santiam Highway, they are open from 6AM until 9PM on sundays through thursdays, and until 10PM on fridays and saturdays.

now, the Albany and corvallis elmer’s restaurants are proud to be a part of the Points for Profit program, so save those receipts and turn them in to your favorite

participating non-profit organization. You’ll be rewarded twice, once by being served delicious food in the best restaurants in oregon; and with the knowledge that you have helped out a worthy cause by turning in your receipt.

Cyanoacrylates, (CAs) have become the adhesive of choice for most hobby and household applications. High quality CAs such as INSTA-CURE™, when used properly, form bonds that in many cases are stronger than the material that is being adhered. INSTA-CURE™ is a highly refined CA which, combined with its freshness, gives a guaranteed 2 year shelf life. CAs are reactive monomers that chemically link (polymerize) when pressed into a thin film. The very thin layer of water moisture present on most surfaces acts as an alkali, or weak base, which is the catalyst that results in bonding; however, the presence of detectable amounts of water usually degrades the performance of CAs.

INSTA-CURE™ has a water-thin viscosity that wicks deep into joints by capillary action and cures in a matter of a few seconds. Surfaces to be bonded must be tight fitting and should be held together while you apply the CA around the edges of the seam. At the moment CAs cure, they give off a vapor that can irritate the nose and

eyes, so be prepared. Thin CAs work very well on balsa since they penetrate into the wood and form more than just

a surface bond.INSTA-

CURE+™ is a higher viscosity CA for loose fitting joints inwhichtheadhesive must bridge gaps. Normally, the thicker CA is

applied to one surface and then the parts are held tightly together for about 5 to 15 seconds. For large surface areas, including those with close fitting joints such as laminations, INSTA-CURE+ ™ should also be used. To prevent premature curing, don’t spread the glue into a thin film. Lay down a serpentine bead with about 1” separations on one surface, and then assemble the parts, letting the pressure spread the CA out.

Eventually, someone you know will move to a new house — and this idea will come in very handy indeed when you want to come up with a house warming gift that is a little bit more meaningful and interesting than just handing over a pot plant.

There is an old Celtic tradition which involves the humble snail.

Now the snail carries its house on its back and so it is never homeless; but more, the spiral design of thesnailshellwasalwaysvery special to the Celtic people, so it makes perfect sense that any kind of snail makes the perfect house warming present.

To be warm, safe, snug and protected inside one’s own home is a wonderful idea and the snail symbol, or the more abstract spiral, lends itself to all manner of wonderful house warming gifts.

You can make a card very easily by cutting out a spiral and affixing it with glue; any snail motif on a greeting card or a picture of a snail drawn or

cut out from another source will make the house warming card special.

Snails are very popular as ornaments, so you can get an enormous variety of all sizes of snail figurines, from small brass snails to large garden ornaments made from marble and they’re all easily found, online and

off.An exotic snail shell, or the shell of

a sea snail is an extension of this idea and particularly good

for beach front properties. As the basic snail/

spiral shape is natural and easy, you can even just find a beautiful

stone and paint a spiral on it for a superb and

extremely personal and lovely house warming present; further, it is the type of gift that the recipients will treasure and keep, and that will remind them of you and your good wishes every time they see it.

People who work in sleep medicine have always been troubled by the public’s lack of awarenessaboutsleep apnea. If you ask your average person about sleep apnea, you’re likely to get a response like “Oh, I think my uncle used to sleep with some kinda machine but he hated it!’

While the public is still largely unaware of the dangers that sleep apnea (a disorder characterized by persistent pauses in breathing during sleep) poses, awareness about the disorder has been slowly building within the community of healthcare professionals. But while sleep apnea is normally associated with disorders such as obesity and hypertension, there is also a growing awareness of the association between sleep apnea and glaucoma.

“Glaucoma is not just one eye disease, but a group of eye conditions resulting in optic nerve damage, which causes loss of vision. Abnormally high pressure inside your eye (intraocular pressure) usually, but not always, causes this damage.” (MayoClinic.com, 1998-2012, pp.01) Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness and can be very difficult to

detect before the damage is irreversible. New studies have found that there

may be a correlation between Glaucoma and sleep apnea. One such study found that out of 83 randomly selected OSA patients, 33% suffered from some kind of glaucoma (Harby, 2003). 33% is an extremely significant number,

especially when compared to glaucoma’s prevalence in the general population of just 1.5% to 2.5%.

“Our study rationale looked at OSA because it causes profound changes in oxygenation, circulatory hemodynamics, and inflammatory factors” says Dr. Rick Bendel of the Mayo Clinic of Jacksonville, Florida. “All of these may influence optic nerve integrity and possibly intraocular pressure, as well.”

Dr. Bendel recommends that all sleep apnea patients be screened for glaucoma. “OSA may be a modifiable risk factor that is easily treatable,” he told an audience at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Since some forms of glaucoma can be so insidious, screening sleep apnea

Does your pet have breath so bad it could eat the rust off the bumper of a ’57 Buick? In the majority of cases bad breath is the result of periodontal disease, which starts with the inflammation of gums known as gingivitis. Your regular veterinarian can confirm the presence of dental disease and rule out a few other causes of bad breath also known as halitosis. Dental disease starts with the adherence of bacteria to tooth enamel where they produce a thick film known as plaque. Over a period of days the plaque mineralizes and becomes the rock hard material known as tartar. When plaque and tartar contact the gums it causes inflammation known as gingivitis.

Plaque that covers the enamel can be removed by brushing the teeth once every one to two days and will prevent it from mineralizing into tartar. The tongues of cats and dogs are actually pretty good at removing plaque from the inside surface of their teeth so we need to focus on the outsides. Using pet friendly toothpaste, with flavors like chicken or beef, can help to get pets to accept brushing. It does take time and patience to train pets to accept this practice. Let’s face it, some pets; especially cats will never accept a good brushing. That’s where other products are helpful.

Your Vet can provide you with water additives that help to reduce the number of bacteria that cause plaque. Gels and pastes can also be applied to help reduce oral bacteria. Dental treats like Greenies, Dentabone, and rawhide chews infused with anti-plaque additives are available at pet stores and veterinary offices. When shopping for dental treats look for the

VOHC logo. This is the seal of approval from the Veterinary Oral Health Council. Bones should not be used to help clean teeth. We have seen too many broken teeth in dogs fed bones whether they were raw or cooked. Once formed tartar

can only be adequately removed through ultrasonic scaling, especially when it accumulates under the gums and begins to cause gingivitis. Only your veterinarian can adequately

scale and polish the surface of the teeth that lies under the gums. So, home care should be guided towards reducing the rate plaque and tartar form on the teeth and thus reduce their chance of progressing under the gums.

One thing you can depend on is the smaller the dog the bigger their risk is for developing periodontal disease. Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Pomeranians, Yorkshire Terriers and many other small breeds are notorious for having dental disease. Small breed dog owners need to begin training their pets at a young age to accept tooth brushing. This is where flavored toothpaste can be helpful.

Keeping your pet’s teeth clean will help reduce the chances of bacteria moving under the gums causing gingivitis and progressing to the loss of bone that holds teeth in their sockets, eventually progressing to tooth loss. As periodontal disease progress bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause significant damage to the filters of the kidneys and the valves of the heart.

In short there are two things that will go farther than anything else in helping your pet live a longer and healthier life: Maintaining a good clean mouth through combining home care with regular visits to your veterinarian and helping your pet maintain a lean body mass.

In the cold morning hours of April 14, 1912, The RMS Titanic slipped beneath the waves of the mid-Atlantic Ocean carrying over 1,500 of its 2,223 passengers and crew to a watery grave. This April 14th will mark exactly 100 years since that tragic night. Since then, the Titanic has been the subject of dozens of movies on both the big theater screen and on TV; some good, some terribly distorting the facts. It is my belief that if you are going to make a movie about a historic event, you should stick to the facts. Otherwise, as future generations see the film, what is fiction in the story telling is then interpreted as fact.

I’m sure that if you talk to young people now, their only exposure to one of the most tragic events of the 20th century is James Cameron’s 1997 spectacular “Titanic”. Instead of concentrating on the facts of the event, Cameron tells a love story about a third-class passenger running up and down the stairs to romance a first-class passenger. NOT HARDLY! The third-class passenger would have probably been clapped in irons as soon as he tried to get up the stairs. At that time, there was no such thing as a mixing of immigrant classes with the hoi-poli rich.

The first film versions of the sinking were made as silent documentaries

starting as early as late 1912. The first sound movie is the British “Disaster at Sea” released in 1929. Although it was based on the sinking of the Titanic, it was a highly fictionalized version. The good news is that it survives and is available on DVD. You may have to look for it but it’s out there, I have it in my collection.

Again, it would take up this entire paper if I were to list all the Titanic related movies made over the last 100 years. One of the most well remembered films is “Titanic” made in 1953 by 20th Century Fox and starring Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck. Again a fictionalized story about a couple getting a divorce but meeting on the ship. In the 1960’s even the musical “Unsinkable Molly Brown” with Debbie Reynolds featured the Titanic. After all, Molly Brown was a real person and did survive the sinking. For a real “hoot” try the 1980 film, “Raise the Titanic” Its a full-fledged drama that is so ridiculous its good.

For my money the best and most accurate version is the British “A Night to Remember” released in 1958, based on the Walter Lord book and with a great cast headed by Kenneth Moore. Forget onboard romances and classes intermingling with each other. This is pretty much the real story of the heroes

A customer recently told me that The Book of Lies by Brad Meltzer had one of the most intricately worked plots of any thriller he had read in at least a decade. So when the chance arose to read a copy of Meltzer’s first novel, The Tenth Justice, I thought it worth the chance.

The title refers to the legal clerks who work in the Supreme Court: their collective effort is sometimes referred to being as powerful as a tenth Supreme Court justice. Our hero is Ben Addison, a clerk who prematurely reveals a major Supreme Court decision to someone who takes advantage of the inside information to make a fortune. When Ben finds out, he panics because his seemingly harmless breaking of the Court’s ethical code could get him into serious trouble. In an effort to protect himself, he proceeds to try to track down the bad guy, Rick Fagan.

Unfortunately for Ben, Rick not only does not appreciate Ben’s efforts to find him, he also tries to bribe, blackmail, and threaten Ben into revealing more Court decisions. The real story here is the breaking up of the lifelong friendship Ben has had with his three roommates:

as his suspicions mount about his friends (could they be leaking information to Rick?), their relationships quickly

deteriorate.This is one of

those books in whichtheherois a thoroughly unlikeable character. Unlike most books of this ilk, however, I don’t think Meltzer intended for us to dislike Ben. However, Ben proves

himself to be petty, egotistical, dishonest, whiny, and disloyal. Not the kind of friend for me!

The book is dark, and even though there’s a sort of patched-on happy ending, it is little better than a Band-Aid on a broken arm. This kind of broodiness could make for good future stories; the plot was not amazingly intricate, as The Book of Lies is reported to be; the writing was acceptable if unimaginative, though the main flaw was the admonition of some character to another to “Relax!” or “Calm down!” every third page.

So, I failed to become so enthralled that I had to go right out and read the next one, but for a first book, this is a winner, with enough strong points to make it believable that his most recent ones are excellent!

This morning as my lovely Toodle Gretchen woke me enthusiastically leaping onto my face and dancing around upon me it reminded me to write. As I told myself to breathe in and then slowly out ….what towriteaboutthismonth came to mind…Taking time out for ourselves and personal self care.

A list so long of what we are and what we do everyday came to mind so long that my editors strict word limit simply will not allow me to list all of them. Careers, parenting, relationships, are core yet do not even begin to list or describe the obligations and drains to our energy and spirit.

Let’s think of the analogy of the full cup. The fuller our cup is, the happier and more authentic we are. The more we give to life and those around us. Sadly the emptier the cup becomes the more harried and empty we become. Ultimately having less to give in every way in all we do. With each time we “give” our cup becomes a little bit emptier. Every day, many times a day, maybe all day long we are “giving” from our cup. Soon as we peer over the rim what do you see? The bottom……. Gasp!

You may ask yourself as I do at times… What now? Deadlines are approaching family is crying out for their needs to be meet and you are simply empty. Time to brew another cup boys and girls and it is up to you to grind the beans and brew it. No

one else can do that for you. How?Make time for self care everyday in

small ways daily, and weekly in even larger ways. Daily add a bit more to your cup in small ways. Have a list maybe folded in your wallet or bag of at least ten things you can do. Some of mine include: have a cup of tea, give or get a hug, smile a lot! Weekly fill up your cup and put yourself on your schedule.

I do mean write yourself in! Schedule a massage or relaxation treatment, get a new haircut, take a walk, ride your bike in the sun, schedule a coaching session, have a pillow fight with your spouse or kids. Occasionally I must admit that stopping in to see Marianne at ReStyle in North Albany has been a favorite or a glass of wine at a great place like Novak’s.

It can be light hearted and fun or so relaxing it puts you to sleep. Just make sure YOU decided and make it what YOU need to fill up your cup each week. If you are feeling overbooked and overwhelmed and really do not know where to start give me a call this month. We are planning a workshop retreat at the coast and local workshops focusing on practicing self care and self improvement. Yet also as an overbooked Mother of five with three in the military I will be taking notes and lots of deep breathes with you all.

Pouring into a cup now……. Hugs to you all!

Astigmatism is a vision condition that occurs when the front surface of your eye, the cornea, is slightly irregular in shape. This irregular shape prevents light from focusing properly on the back of your eye, the retina. As a result, your vision may be blurred at all distances. Most people have some degree of astigmatism.

The following are my own thoughts from over thirty years experience of observing visual development in children. Unaided vision of children who have astigmatism can have the following complaints while performing concentrated tasks:• Burning and stinging of the eyes• Loss of place on the page• Blurred vision• Sleepiness• Frontal headaches

War on PestsNow that spring is upon us, insects and unwanted

wildlife are waging war on our homes and businesses, which may feel like a losing battle. Many of us are simply caught off guard by the surge of insect, rodent and wildlife activity that is typical this time of year. Because one of the biggest investments you may make is purchasing a home, an often over looked way to protect your home is to have a pest control program in place. Not only can a good pest control program protect your home, it can protect your family. Insects, rodents and nuisance wildlife can damage your home and if left untreated can end up costing you the homeowner hundreds if not thousands of dollars in repairs. These unwanted guests could do more than damage your home; they often carry diseases that can be spread to you or your pets. When people think of pest control programs they tend to think of harmful chemicals being sprayed throughout their home and what affects this may have on their family and the environment. Spraying tons of chemicals around your home should be a thing of the past. A good pest control company should follow the IPM (Integrated Pest Management) approach or what we like to refer to as Intelligent Pest Management in solving pest problems. In short, they search out the source of the problem, treat it and set up protective barriers. This allows for less chemicals and longer results.

Here are just few tips to help minimize unwanted pests in your home this Spring.1 Trim back all hedges and trees around your home

about a foot or more from the structure. Plants and shrubs touching your house can provide a super highway for bugs to enter and encourage infestation.

2 Patch any openings in your home that may serve as a bug’s entrance. Check the gaps around doors and windows and make sure they are sealed tightly. Replace or repair torn screens in windows or doors to ward off bugs from coming in. Check other openings in your home as well such as around dryer vents, exhaust vents, and around utility openings and make the necessary work to repair these holes.

3 Store pet foods in a sealed container. Do not let them sit out in the open as flies, moths, rodents, skunks, opossum and raccoons are attracted to the pet food.

4 Make sure to clean up promptly. Food particles lying around as well as beverage spills draw the attention of bugs. Cleaning up the mess right away discourages insects from coming in and stop them form infesting your home.

5 Stack firewood off the ground, outside and away from the home. For more

Spring has officially arrived and even through when this article is being written there is still snow on the ground…it doesn’t stop us from planning our camping outings! This Good Travel is to help beginners with camping.

It would always very difficult for anybody to do anything for the first time. This is what a new service or work tends to give headache to them who are not used to them. Camping for beginners would no different from others. There remains always a fear factor which reflects in our work. The camping experience would be fun filled and enjoyable provided you are prepared for it. For novice campers there are some tips which make them beginner to advanced camper in real time.

Before setting for camping know other people who are with you and about the services or facilities they require for that duration. Think yourself what facilities you need with an outhouse. If your children are with you, think about their needs. You can choose campsite that fulfill those needs.

Always go to camping with someone else who has prior experience of camping. You could learn from their experience every moment.

For your camping trip plan very early. Popular destinations are always reserved months in hand. You can also choose destinations that are close to your home. For you it would be better to arrive at the campsite before darkness arrive in order to get all

your gear organized. Ensure that you take your tent before you leave

for the destination. Check that you have poles, stakes and other items which are required for assembling the tent.

While packing for the camping use checklist. If you need something extra during camping you can write those in your checklist so that you can use them in your next camping trip.

Always consider the weather before leaving for camping. Pack clothes and footwear according to the weather. If you have checked it prior to leaving there, you could know what to take there with yourself.

Food is an important thing during your camping duration. You need food that should be energetic for body. You should bring food that will be

easier for you to prepare and serve. Also make sure you have other modes for preparing food such as matches, firewood and others.

You can make some plans for your activities for your trip. During camping you can opt for biking, hiking, river rafting, boating, swimming, fishing or horse back riding. All this depends on how you can utilize your time in the campsite.

Always keep your campsite clean. This is because a lot of groups will come there to enjoy and they definitely appreciate your work. Whatever it may be, you never want something will spoil your fun.

The oldest and most collectible Easter items were made in Germany from the 1830’s through the 1950’s. Collectors can also find items made in Japan beginning from the mid 1930’s.

Here is a guideline for determining the age of Easter collectibles from Germany. Pieces marked German were generally produced before 1918. Items with a German Republic stamp can be dated between 1918 and 1933. East Germany, German Democratic Republic, West Germany and Federal Republic of Germany marks all date after World War II.

Older German Easter collectibles generally hold more value than those from other parts of the world.

How did eggs and cute baby animals become symbols of Easter? It is said that Ancient Persians presented eggs as gifts in the springtime to be a symbol of new life. When eggs became more plentiful the people began to decorate them in bright

colors to mark the end of the long hard winter.

Some believe that the “Easter Bunny” actually originated as a hare. Ancient Egyptians fittingly considered the hare a sacred symbol of fertility. It took until the 19th century for the word hare to be translated into “rabbit”. It was also about this time that German candy factories began producing chocolate bunnies, eggs and chicks for the Easter celebrations. This

tradition was brought to the United States by German immigrants.

about 1/3 on the next pass.• To keep the seed coverage even, top-dress the

grass seed with a light compost mix. You only want to just barely cover the seed. This is more of a dusting of material. It will help keep moisture near the seeds as they begin to germinate.

Follow-up careOnce you have successfully completed lawn

animals.• Water the lawn gently several times a day. Let the

seed just barely dry between watering.• Once the grass seed has germinated well, switch

the watering schedule to deeper and less frequent watering.

and villains on that fateful night. It is available on DVD, as are the other films I have mentioned here.

As a side note to all of this, many years ago I had the interesting job of interviewing one of the few surviving third-class passengers. He was there and heard the band playing as the ship sank. If it had not been for two men who picked him up as a young teenager, strapped a life jacket on him and threw him overboard, he would not have survived. Wow! That’s the real story of the Titanic.

which the snail design can be used for house warming gifts. If you really need to give a pot plant, you can decorate the pot in which it comes with a spiral. Any budding artist can make and paint a basic snail from self hardening clay; snail and spiral mobiles are easy and always fascinating, too. You can make a small painting that can be hung in a hallway and depending on the recipient, grandchildren

can get involved, just the same as famous interior designers, artists and goldsmiths — it only depends on your budget.

I think that the idea of the Celtic house warming snail is a wonderful way to convey good wishes to someone in their new home, and to give them your intention that they should always be snug, happy, well cared for and safe.
