Artist’s Statement
TURN TO CLEAR VISIONMarch 2011, Manhattan
I enjoy the act of taking a picture. By removing a moment from its context, I can later revel in the composition. Each one has typical memories associated with my own experience at the time, but as that memory fades (often more quickly than I’d like), a new appreciation for it arises. I become a fan of the picture and grow enthusiastic about the details. As if I wasn’t even there when it was taken. It is then that the nature of the composition reveals itself to me and I am engaged by it all over again.
I try flatten out the scenes and utilize negative spaces. Frequently, I am looking for obvious perpendiculars as a means of achieving purposeful graphic compositions that make sense to my eyes. It allows me to have my way with moments and impose my visual sensibilities at large.
What follows is a narrow slice of that very kind of activity going back 8 years or so. Each pairing makes a special kind of sense to me. This volume though is more of a personal survey than anything else. A handheld portal back to those specific moments.
