November 12, 2017

In this GATHERING, you are seen and loved. No matter who you are, you are accepted without condition and you belong here. In this GATHERING, our relationships will deepen - with both God and with each other. In this GATHERING, we acknowledge that there are different ways we connect with God in worship.

During the service, you will have the chance to participate in different experiential stations:Candle Table - Light a candle to claim Christ’s light or to remember a loved one.Offering Basket - Give an offering to support God’s work at TVLC and throughout the world. You can

also give by going to tvlc.org/give on your mobile device.Arts & Crafts Table - Exercise your God-given creativity.Prayer Wall - Write your own requests and lift up others’ requests.Verses Table - Pick a verse to meditate and reflect on.Baptismal Font - Remember God’s grace poured out to you through the waters of baptism.Service Table - Contribute to an ongoing service project.

We’ve created spaces where younger worshipers may find comfort and a place just for them. Infants can find a spot on the “prayground”

where the play gyms and bouncy chairs have front row seats! Toddlers can belly up to a table on either side of the chairs, pull out their busy bag materials and get to work! Kids and youth are encouraged to take an active role in worship leadership. Nursery care is also available until noon for those who desire.

All are welcome to PARTICIPATE as assistants in the service. You can be a reader, usher, greeter or help in other ways. Please visit the Welcome Table to sign up or go to http://tvlc.org/Worship_Assistants

Flag Retirement CeremonyIn honor of Veteran’s Day, Boy Scout Troop 141 is inviting the TVLC congregation to a flag retirement ceremony on Monday, November 13th. The ceremony will start at 7:30 pm at the fire pit next to the library. Seating is limited so please bring your own chair. If you have a flag that needs to be retired, please bring it along also.

The TVLC GriefShare team is sponsoring a program for anyone who is facing a difficult holiday

season because of the loss of a loved one. Please join us in the Choir Room on Sunday, November 12th, 11:00am-12:30pm. We will share an excellent DVD by the makers of www.GriefShare.org followed by a discussion by our GriefShare ministry team. You will receive a FREE booklet with devotions and suggestions to make the holidays easier for you. For more information, call Eunice Bradley-Fox (490-5664) or Florence Foster (749-3857).

Prime Timers’ History LessonPrime Timers will visit the Arizona History Museum at 949 East 2nd Street on Friday, November 17th. The car pool will meet at 9:15am at the church library. IF YOU HAVE A HANDICAP sticker for your car, please bring it for free handicap parking at the museum. Admission is $5.00 (or $7.00 for a docent-led tour). Lunch afterwards at Gentle Ben’s on University Avenue. Contact Sandy McKee at 749-1014 if you plan to attend lunch (for a head count for the restaurant).

Christmas is right around the corner, and we are getting ready to kick off the Christmas Gift Program! Once again

this year, the TVLC Congregation will provide Christmas Gifts to children who might not otherwise receive gifts (last year, we gifted a total of 228 children!). The children receiving these gifts will have a more joyful Christmas, and the TVLC families donating the gifts will enjoy a warm glow knowing that they have done something to touch others. Remember, Jesus himself told us that it is more blessed to give than to receive. We need a number of volunteers to achieve the success we have enjoyed in the past. Help is needed for a number of tasks:• 4 to 6 adults needed after each of the four church services to

coordinate gift signups: - Saturday, November 25th, Sunday, November 26th - Saturday, December 2nd, Sunday, December 3rd - Saturday, December 9th, Sunday, December 10th

• 2 adults after each of the four services to transport gifts from the church to the men’s locker room for storage and place gifts in the family’s gift bag:

- Saturday, December 2nd, Sunday, December 3rd - Saturday, December 9th, Sunday, December 10th - Saturday, December 16th, Sunday, December 17th

BED SHEET DRIVE SUCCESS! 71 sheet sets, 27 blankets and 10 sets of pillow cases were delivered to Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest. You’ve made it possible for the poor elderly and disabled in our community to toss away their threadbare bedding and feel the joy of new sheets and warm blankets. You’ve provided bedding to refugees who have spent years sleeping on the ground in tents. What a blessing to share God’s abundance with others. Thank you!

Advent Mid-week Meditation‘Be still, and know that I am God!’ - Psalm 46:10

Put down your Christmas to-do list and join us on Wednesday evenings during Advent to take a short pause from the noise of the season. Prayer, scripture and quiet song in a simple setting will create a time for candle-light meditation and silence to prepare ourselves for the birth of Jesus.

6:30-7:00pm in the SanctuaryNovember 29th, December 6th,

December 13th and December 20th

The Wednesday Night Bible Study will not meet during Advent, so that people can attend the Advent Mid-week Meditation. The group

will meet on November 15th, and then reconvene January 10th.

NOVEMBER 12, 2017 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Each day matters.

DAILY BIBLE READINGS Sunday Matthew 25:1-13 Parable of the wise and foolish girlsMonday Matthew 24:36-44 Keep watchTuesday Deuteronomy 4:5-20 Watch yourselves carefullyWednesday Micah 7:1-9 Watching in hope for the LordThursday Luke 21:29-37 Be always on the watchFriday Amos 5:18-24 What the Lord requiresSaturday Psalm 70 God is wonderfulSunday Matthew 25:14-30 Parable of the talentsSCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK:So, my disciples, always be ready! You don’t know the day or the time when all this will happen. - Matthew 25:13PRAY, BLESS AND SING:A Prayer for the Week: Dear Lord, come quickly with your saving grace that our lives may reflect your love and mercy for all you have created. Amen.Mealtime Prayer: For this meal and all God’s gifts, let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God! Amen.A Blessing to Give: May you rejoice and be glad for this is the day that the Lord has made.Hymn of the Week: Give Me Oil in My LampCARING CONVERSATIONS: Discuss in your home or small group:

• Tell about something in your life that needs to be done now and cannot wait.

• What matters to you today? How does that connect with your Christian faith?

• In the parable of the wise and foolish girls, there is a focus on urgency and being ready. How does your Christian faith call you to a sense of urgency and readiness?

DEVOTIONS: Read: Matthew 25:1-13. Since the time of the New Testament church, there has been a concern to keep the faith alive and “burning” while waiting for Christ’s return. We can become complacent and lose the sense of urgency about actively living the Christian faith everyday. In Amos 5:18-24 the prophet pointed out that God was not pleased with a worship life that did not show itself in acts of justice and fairness. Reflect on how the Christian faith matters every day. Pray the following prayer:Dear God, give me a living faith that seeks to please you with love, fairness, and care for others each day. Amen. Close with The Lord’s Prayer.SERVICE: The biblical theme of justice is closely associated with care for those in need, especially the poor. Take time this week to do some act of service for someone in need. See your action as a way to say, “Yes,” to the justice and fairness of God in the world.RITUALS AND TRADITIONS: Reflect this week on how each day in the life of faith matters. Light a candle in remembrance of the parable of the wise and foolish girls. Sing or pray the “Hymn of the Week”, Give Me Oil in My Lamp. Take time to read Scripture, pray, and care for the needs of others.
