provide care for the entire hospital,” said Annette Price, RT, R BBA, radiology’s coordinator of diagnostic services. “We can now put a digital portable [X-ray machine] on our COVID units to know instantly if we have provided a good image. The image will be immediately available for the physician to make decisions on next steps.”
“The Foundation is supporting this region’s effort to be proactive and care for our communities in these unprecedented times,” said Beth Doyle, executive vice president. “Without our donors’ loyal support over the years, we would not be able to help Centra meet its current challenges.”

Donors provide critical resources to support Centra’s COVID-19 pandemic response efforts
The Centra Foundation released funding of $962,925 in late March to purchase six new ventilators, five digital portable X-ray machines, and to conduct a public health education campaign about COVID-19 for the Centra service area.
Ventilators are in high demand globally and across the United States, and rentals are scarce.
“We need these additional ventilators to take care of a potential patient surge and to be equipped with the latest technology to serve patients in the future,” said Siminne Duff, BS, RRT, respiratory care interim director. “We are so grateful to Foundation donors for meeting this need!”
Portable X-ray machines will ensure continued safety by enabling caregivers to capture images, send and receive reports without having to exit and re-enter a patient’s room.
“This is a game changer for us, for our patients, and for how we

Caregivers relieved and grateful for outpouring of mask donations
“For centuries, warriors have gone into battle with armor for protection. Although COVID-19 is an invisible enemy, it is a worthy rival, and our warriors need armor. Rosie the Riveter played a pivotal role in our success in World War II, and our story nearly 80 years later will tell about a community dedicated to providing armor in the form of masks, face shields, and so much more. Our people are our most precious resource, and these deliveries keep them safe.”
– Chris Thomson, MD, MS, MBA, FACEPCentra senior vice president and chief medical officer
In the fight against COVID-19, an adequate supply of personal protective equipment is critical. Centra is incredibly fortunate for the support of community residents, volunteer groups and businesses who have donated thousands of surgical and homemade cotton masks. But even with this outpouring of support, the need for masks by our caregivers far exceeded the supply in early April. Over the past months, Centra’s materials management team has worked tirelessly to obtain additional masks through the supply chain and other channels. Thanks to you – our donors – the Centra Foundation was able to provide funding towards Centra’s recent purchase of a large quantity of surgical masks. A shipment of more than 100,000 masks arrived Easter Sunday at Centra from Shenzhen, China, by way of South Korea and JFK International Airport. Anxiously awaiting their arrival, Tim Oswald, Centra materials management supervisor, had said nothing would stand in the way of their delivery. “If I got the call at 2 am that the delivery arrived, I was not about to tell the driver to turn around,” he said. “Our caregivers were waiting desperately for this shipment so I was ready to head straight to the hospital whenever I got the call.” This recent acquisition has allowed Centra to continue to keep our caregivers, patients and visitors safe. However, supplies are not unlimited, and homemade masks continue to play an important role in protecting non-patient facing caregivers in our facilities. To date, Centra has received 3,500 cotton masks from Gretna, Bedford, Lynchburg and Farmville donors. What began as a goodwill gesture by a few turned into an outpouring of support from these communities. As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to spread, Centra is making every effort to secure additional masks and appreciates all donations of homemade, surgical and N-95 masks. Centra leaders give back, give big
Centra’s annual family campaign kicked off April 1 with record levels of leadership giving in the first 10 days. At the weekly leadership team’s virtual meeting on April 2, Andy Mueller, MD, Centra president and chief executive officer, announced his commitment to contribute his salary for the month of April to the campaign, dedicating his gift toward employee assistance. Mark Townsend, MD, MHCM, Centra Foundation board chair and Centra Medical Group executive medical director, quickly followed suit. “Many of our caregivers are living through significant financial stress, and leadership giving is a fantastic way of returning support to our community’s health system,” explained Dr. Townsend. “Our support provides access to ventilators and X-ray equipment, and supports patients and fellow caregivers in need. My family counts it a privilege to be able to help.” Adding to the unprecedented demonstration of leadership giving, Les Reed, MD, FACP, Centra Health senior vice president and Centra Medical Group president, joined in gifting a month of salary and said, “Please accept this donation with my heartfelt thanks to all of our employees who every day interact with patients and put themselves at risk to care for the most vulnerable people in our community.”

I gave, but I first received. Centra and the communities we serve welcomed me and my family with open arms almost seven years ago. Giving back through the Centra Family Campaign is how we say thank you back to our community and pass on the blessings bestowed upon us.”
