HIGHLIGHTS
Willem Ledeboer is lid van de Raad
van Commissarissen van Riwal en
vervult tijdelijk de functie van CEO.
Een goed moment voor een interview
over de focus van Riwal voor 2012 en
het veranderingsproces dat ons bedrijf
momenteel ondergaat.
Hoe kijk je terug op het jaar 2011?
“2011 was een jaar met heel veel ver-
anderingen. We hebben stappen ge-
zet om van een groep van individuele
landenorganisaties te gaan naar een
meer corporate geheel, met behoud
van het lokale ondernemerschap. In
bijna alle landen, waarin we opereren,
was de economische situatie lastig.
Dankzij ons ondernemerschap en het
gezamenlijk optreden als Riwal groep,
zijn we goed door de moeilijke om-
standigheden heen gekomen.
Een belangrijke stap in 2011 was één
financieel geïntegreerd budget voor
de groep, zodat de middelen en ma-
chines duidelijk toegekend zijn. Om
minder afhankelijk te worden van de
bouwsector, hebben we ons gericht
op diversificatie van de klantenkring,
bijvoorbeeld in de richting van in-
dustrie en onderhoud. We hebben
in Denemarken de activiteiten van
BMS overgenomen en daarmee onze
marktpositie in Scandinavië versterkt.
Tot slot heeft het veranderingsproces,
dat we Riwal Tuning Program hebben
genoemd, een enorme versnelling ge-
kregen”.
De ambitie van Riwal is om de
leidende verhuurspecialist van
hoogwerkers in Europa te worden.
Welke stappen worden precies
gezet om dit doel te bereiken?
“Er is een hernieuwde focus op fu-
sies en overnames. We gaan de witte
plekken in Europa opvullen. We kun-
nen verdere groei realiseren vanwege
het afsluiten van een nieuwe 3-jaars
financiering met onze banken. Riwal
Holding Group wordt meer en meer
het centrale aanspreekpunt voor de
rest van de landen, met centrale func-
ties die dienend zijn aan de landen,
bijvoorbeeld de focus op internatio-
naal opererende klanten. Met een cen-
traal geleid fleet management team
kunnen we inspelen op groeisituaties
in bestaande en nieuwe landen. Het
management team is verder versterkt,
We zullen klantengroepen beter
moeten segmenteren, we wil-
len service bieden aan klanten
die bereid zijn om daarvoor
te betalen. Daarnaast moeten
we ervoor zorgen dat we machines
die stilstaan vanwege een technische
oorzaak weer operationeel krijgen om
zo onze bezettingsgraad te optimali-
seren. We zullen ook het Riwal Tuning
Program verder implementeren.
ten?
“In 2011 hebben we directie versterkt
met Edmund Tenfelde (CFO) en in
maart 2012 zullen we kennis maken

HIGHLIGHTS
Willem Ledeboer is a member of the
Supervisory Board of Riwal and tem-
porary is acting as CEO. That makes
this a good time for an interview about
Riwal’s focus for 2012 and the change
process that our company is currently
carrying out.
How do you look back on 2011?
“2011 was a year with a lot of chan-
ges. We took steps to make the shift
from being a group of individual
country organisations to a more cor-
porate environment whilst retaining
the local entrepreneurial leadership.
The economic situation was chal-
lenging in nearly all the countries
where we operate, but this entre-
preneurial approach and working
together as the Riwal group meant that
we were able to deal with the
difficult conditions successfully.
It is a strength of the group that
we can support one another
and help a country like Spain
through the crisis.
One important step in 2011
was a financially integrated
budget for the group, so that
the resources and machi-
nery are clearly allocated. In
order to become less depen-
dent on the construction sector we
focused on diversifying the cus-
tomer base, for example
by targeting industry
and maintenance. In
Denmark we took
over the activities of
BMS and thus further
strengthened our market
position in Scandinavia.
Finally the change process
that we have labelled the Riwal Tuning
Program underwent a massive acce-
leration.”
Riwal’s ambition is to become the
leading rental specialist for aerial
work platforms in Europe. What
steps are being taken to achieve
this objective?
“There is a renewed focus on mergers
and acquisitions: we are going to fill
in the blanks across Europe. We can
achieve further growth thanks to a
new 3 year funding agreement that we
have concluded with our banks. Riwal
Holding Group is increasingly beco-
ming the central point of contact for
the other countries, with central functi-
ons which serve the countries, such as
the focus on customers which operate
internationally. In order to be able to
fulfil this role effectively, we have relo-
cated the head office. This shift in fo-
cus also gives the Dutch organisation
room to grow. With a centrally led fleet
management team we can respond to
growth opportunities in existing and
new countries. The management team
has been strengthened further, both
on the board and by engaging the
regional directors in the international
management team.”
What is the most important focus
for 2012?
“The focus is on the customers and on
optimising our prices. We will have to
segment our customer groups better:
we want to offer services to customers
who are prepared to pay for them. Of
course it is important to ensure that
our customers actually pay. We also
need to ensure that we get machines
that are non-operational for technical
reasons working again in order to op-
timise our utilisation rate. The focus
will also be on further implementing
the Riwal Tuning Program. People are
sometimes not quite sure what this
involves, and we will be communica-
ting about this more internally over the
coming period. It relates to the com-
pany’s core processes such as stra-
tegy, IT, human resources, marketing
& sales and finance, as well as the ma-
nagement of our fleet of machines and
measuring our performance in parti-
cular. These are things that we already
do, but then doing them in a smarter
way, more as one company. The sum
of the parts is more than a combina-
tion of those individual countries. I
would reiterate that the focus is on our
customers - that is where I started and
that is where I’ll end, because in chal-
lenging times you need to be close to
your customer.”
Finally, could you clarify the chan-
ges to the Riwal board?
“In 2011 we strengthened the board
with Edmund Tenfelde (CFO), and in
March 2012 we will be meeting the
new CEO Norty Turner, who comes
from Hertz Equipment Rental Corpo-
ration with years of experience in the
industry. Norty Turner will take on the
day-to-day running of Riwal Holding
Group in conjunction with the CFO
and the COO Okke Taselaar. We will
talk to him in our next Highlights in or-
der to get to know him better. We are
delighted that Dick Schalekamp will
be implementing our focus for 2012
with regard to mergers & acquisitions,
tapping new markets and new inter-
national customers. Dick Schalekamp
has made Riwal into the fantastic busi-
ness that it is today; the new CEO will
help grow the company further and
continue to flesh out the strategy. This
means that we have the right people
in the right place. I anticipate a great
future for the entire Riwal group.”

Nederland - De International Powered
Access Federation (IPAF) heeft op de
APEX een nieuwe veiligheidscampag-
ne gelanceerd die oproept tot juiste
inschatting van de grondtoestand en
correct gebruik van stabilisatoren,
stempels en stempelplaten.
De IPAF campagne “Spread the load!”
(Verdeel de gronddruk) is opgebouwd
rond een simpele en duidelijke bood-
schap: Gebruik altijd stempelplaten
bij het werken met (knik) telescoop
hoogwerkers die afgestempeld staan.
De campagne wil duidelijke en prak-
tische richtlijnen geven over wanneer
en hoe stempelplaten moeten worden
gebruikt en is gestart als initiatief van
de IPAF – UK Hire Committee.
Ook binnen Riwal wordt er aandacht
gegeven aan het gebruik van stempel-
platen. Zo worden er bij het verhuren
van hoogwerkers van specifieke types
vanaf 25 meter kosteloos stempelpla-
ten meegeleverd.
The Netherlands - IPAF has launched

IPAF’s “Spread the load!” campaign is
built around this simple and straight-
forward message: Spreader plates

should always be used with boom-
type mobile elevating work platforms
(MEWPs) when fully supported on their

used with all other MEWPs that have
outriggers, unless a risk assessment
indicates they are not necessary. The
campaign is an initiative from the IPAF

Riwal also focusses on the use of
spreader plates. In the rental of aerial

heights starting from 25 metres the
spreader plates are supplied free of

The Netherlands - Civil Engineering

laboration with Instant Scaffolds sup-
ported the attempt by providing aerial

support the construction.
The world record was held by students
from Eindhoven. After seven years it
returned with its founders in Delft (The

students built the huge bridge with a
span of 15 meters, a height of 13 me-
ters and consisting of 14,000 crates.
The climax of the project took place on
Monday, October 10. During this day,
the support structure under the bridge

firm.
With the record the students wan-

the management of Riwal Nether-
lands asked Jur Kamsteeg, at the time
Logistics Planner at Riwal, to start
a training centre for Riwal. He had
to start from scratch, all he had was
a desk and the collaboration with
IPAF (International Powered Access
Federation). Five years later the Dutch
Riwal Training Centre has become
market leader in IPAF aerial work plat-
form training in the Netherlands.
Over the past five years the range of
courses has increased. The Dutch
Riwal Training Centre now offers
amongst others aerial work platform-,
telehandler- and forklift training. IPAF,
SOG, IPAF/SOG, BMWT, BMWT/SOG,
TCVT, each machine has its own set
of courses and also for specific indu-
stries there is specific training. Many
of the courses are held on site, but the
flow of students at the unique Riwal
indoor training centre is also growing.
At this point the training centre has five

people working full time to be able to
process the flow of students.
Recently a group of employees of
Sodexo, the largest international Food
& Facilities Management organisation
in the world, took an IPAF training
at Riwal. Marion Loogman, Training
coordinator at Sodexo: “Choosing
Riwal turned out to be the right choice,
the training proved to be very functio-
nal. The response of the participants
clearly shows their enthusiasm for the
training and the trainers.”
Also Saskia van Elteren of the HR
department at Gerco Fire Prevention
is very pleased with the collabora-
tion with Riwal. “We chose Riwal be-
cause we are currently working for a
customer who sets very high training
requirements. They also had their em-
ployees trained at Riwal. We chose the
incompany training. Our employees
were very satisfied and quickly in pos-
session of a certificate.”

The Netherlands - In June 2011
Riwal was invited along with other
rental companies by construction gi-
ant Ballast Nedam (company turnover
€1.4 billion) to participate in a ten-
der. This involved the rental of “small
equipment” including platforms.
Ballast Nedam used an innovative
procurement procedure. In addition to
price, the logistical and administrative
quality, service quality and innovation
played a major role.
With a tight schedule Riwal succes-
sively presented its prices, terms and
unique values. Jaap Mol and Peter
Visser were “questioned” about dea-
ling with certain issues and specific
risks and Riwal remained in the race.
In the final phase, two remaining plat-
form specialists were compared to
each other.
A Riwal delegation consisting of Arjan
Klerks, Hans van Lingen, Ben Fortuin
and Rik Maaskant, was given the op-
portunity to clarify our offer and our
added value. They were also given the
opportunity to answer all final ques-

tions the tender commission had. In
October Ballast Nedam finally an-
nounced they had chosen Riwal.
In November and December further
discussions took place. As well as pre-
parations to make the contract which
would take effect on the first of Janua-
ry 2012. Now a two-year contract with
Ballast Nedam has been signed and
an account team was formed with Ben
Fortuin as account coordinator. Leo
Klop, Peter Bisdom, Bas Dorman and
Andrew van der Haar will act as ac-
count managers for the Ballast Nedam
regions and Jaap Mol as contact for
their service. Using the method descri-

with specific attention to the wishes of
Ballast Nedam we have full confiden-

Nederland - Riwal heeft in Nederland
vestigingen in Dordrecht, Amsterdam
en Eindhoven en nog enkele strate-
gisch gelegen depots waaronder één
op de Eemshaven van waaruit de vol-
ledige Nederlandse markt kan worden
bediend.
Riwal vestiging Amsterdam is sinds 25
oktober gevestigd op Industrieterrein
Stammerdijk in Diemen. In Eindhoven
vestigde Riwal zich per 1 januari op

De keuze voor deze locaties hangt
samen met de centrale ligging in het

De plannen werden gesmeed en de

Een belangrijk onderdeel van de over-

Today Skanska Maskin rents out se-
veral hundreds of machines to both
Skanska Construction and also to a
large variety of external customers at
different construction sites. Currently
only a part of Sweden is covered by
machines from the joint venture, but it
is planned to further develop the rela-
tionship in the future and thereby enter
other regions, cities or projects.
An important part of the agreement is
that both companies share the same
attitude when it comes to safety and
training of operators and engineers.
Part of the joint venture is the manda-
tory training for Skanska staff supplied
by Riwal as well as a hot-line that of-
fers daily technical support.“The con-
struction arm of Skanska is involved in
major projects around the globe and
we hope to further develop the part-
nership with Skanska and Skanska
Maskin in the coming years as Riwal
also spreads its footprint across dif-
ferent countries”, comments Søren
Rosenkrands, Riwal’s Regional Di-
rector for Scandinavia, Germany and
Poland.
The Netherlands - In January hund-
reds of rally drivers from across the
globe braced themselves for an ad-
venturous journey through Argentina,
Chili and Peru for ‘Le Dakar 2012’.
Riwal was represented in the Dakar
rally as sub sponsor of the Dutch VeKa
MAN Rally Team. The team participa-
ted with 4 race trucks.
For the VeKa MAN Rally team these
were 14 very difficult stages with more
setbacks than expected. During the
journey of over 8.000 kilometers the
team was confronted with several
breakdowns, the elimination of team
member Franz Echter and a number of
emergency repairs.
On a positive note, team member
Peter Versluis did perform very well,
achieving the tenth place in the final
standings. Next year the VeKa MAN
Rally team will once again participate
in Dakar and its team members are
highly motivated to reach even better
results.

Denmark - The Kaaver is Denmark’s
oldest beacon, built in 1624 on the
Danish island Fanø. Although the 14
meters high building doesn’t have any
relevant value since the 19th century,
it has always been maintained. Regu-
lar repairs to the woodwork, general
maintenances and the occasional lick

of paint kept the beacon standing un-
til a storm in 1935 destroyed it.
In October 2011 several entrepreneurs
decided to join hands and rebuild the
beacon. The new construction would
be an exact copy of the old Kaaver.
The services of Riwal Denmark were
called upon to contribute to the re-
construction. An Omme Lift 2600
RBD was hired to help rebuild the old
Kaaver. The 2600 RBD has a wide
range without compromising stability
which makes it the best solution for
this specific project.
On November 27, 2011, the new Kaa-
ver was finally completed.
Denemarken - De Kaaver is het oud-
ste baken van Denemarken, gebouwd
in 1624 op het Deense eiland Fanø.
Hoewel het ruim 14 meter hoge bouw-
werk sinds de 19e eeuw geen relevante
waarde meer heeft, is het altijd onder-
houden. Periodiek herstel aan het hout-
werk, algemene reparaties en af en toe
een likje verf hielden het baken staande
tot in 1935 een storm de oude Kaaver
toch fataal werd.
In oktober 2011 besloten verschillende
ondernemers de handen ineen te slaan
en het baken opnieuw te bouwen. De
nieuwe constructie zou een exacte ko-
pie moeten worden van de oude Kaa-
ver. Hierbij werd ook gebruik gemaakt
van de diensten van Riwal Denemar-
ken. Zo werd een Omme Lift van het
type 2600 RBD verhuurd om bij te dra-
gen aan de heropbouw.
De 2600 RBD heeft een groot bereik
zonder in te boeten aan stabiliteit wat
bij uitstek een goede oplossing was bij
dit project. Op 27 november 2011 is
de vernieuwde Kaaver uiteindelijk vol-
tooid.

HIGHLIGHTS
Spanje - Ondanks de zeer moeilijke
marktomstandigheden blijft Riwal toe-
gewijd aan haar vestiging in Spanje,
Clem-Riwal.
De Spaanse verhuurmarkt wordt beïn-
vloed door de voortdurende negatieve
economische ontwikkelingen in de
bouw. Dit heeft geleid tot overcapa-
citeit in de hoogwerker markt en een
sterke druk op de huurprijzen.
Riwal zal daarom de Spaanse acti-
viteiten aanpassen aan de huidige
marktomstandigheden. Betere, gro-
vier Gomez Gonzalez, General Mana-
ger voor Spanje.
Dick Schalekamp, President van
Riwal, licht toe: “Riwal heeft een zeer
sterke reputatie in de markt die zal
worden ondersteund door de maat-
regelen in Spanje. Verder is Riwal erg
begaan met de Spaanse markt als
deel van het Europese netwerk. We
Spain - Riwal is committed to its busi-
ness in Spain which is operated under
the Clem-Riwal name, despite very
difficult market conditions.
The Spanish rental market is affected
by the ongoing negative economic
developments in the non-residential
construction market. This has led to
an overcapacity in the aerial work plat-
form market and a strong pressure on
rental rates.
Riwal will adjust its Spanish business
to the current market conditions. Bet-
ter, bigger and reinforced depots and a
new service structure will remain, co-
vering more than 60% of the Spanish
market value and 50% of the Spanish
geography, in three areas (Levante,
Central Spain and Catalonia).
In addition, a selection of machines
will be defleeted. This will reduce the
general overcapacity of aerial work

platforms in the Spanish market, im-
prove Riwal’s Spanish fleet mix and
at the same time will enable Riwal to
operate the defleeted machines in
countries with better growth perspec-
tives. And as a result of this opera-
tion Clem-Riwal will secure the current
business in Spain, by making the new
structure and investments possible.
“Clem-Riwal will achieve a new ser-
vice and pricing policy for the next
years which will ensure the quality of
our fleet and service and will confirm
our position as a key supplier for all
our customers,” comments Javier
Gomez Gonzalez, General Manager
for Spain.
Dick Schalekamp, Riwal’s President,
comments: “Riwal has a very strong
reputation in the market which is going
to be supported by the measures of
the Spanish operations. Furthermore,
Riwal is very committed to the Spanish
market as part of its European network
and is confident that the company will
come out stronger once economic de-
velopments turn more favorable on the
longer term.”
