CSC Kisan e-Mart: Helping farmers sell their produce directly through CSC

CSC Kisan e-Mart is a unique pla�orm to help farmers sell their produce through CSC.

VLEs are working as facilitator in this model. VLE will on-board farmers on "CSC Kisan e-Mart" portal along with farmers' KYC details and also add stock of farmers for selling. Farmers can sell their produce direct, on portal through bid process.

VLE will get commission on adding verified stock and farmers on portal.

Farmer will get their sold produce amount in his Bank account.

This project is currently being run as a pilot project star�ng with 5 districts (Pune, Nashik, Satara, Solapur and Jalna) of Maharashtra.

Two days a�er the na�onal lockdown was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rasheed Begum, a 62-year-old resident of Jhabua, an interior village in the hinterland of Central India, started feeling unwell.

Having undergone a heart surgery a few months ago, she didn't want to travel to the nearest hospital around 46km away. Her worries were accentuated by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic as the aged are more vulnerable and are advised not to go out.

The next thing she did was to go to a village-level common services centre run by the telecommunica�on department of the Indian government, equipped with high-speed internet and cameras. She consulted her doctor on her health issues and was given medicines using telemedicine facility.

With the lockdown, Indians are reaching out to doctors over the mildest symptoms using tele-consulta�ons offered by hospitals. Telemedicine is the most transforma�ve change Indian hospitals have made to provide healthcare services in the post-coronavirus disease (Covid-19). Accessibility has been a perennial problem of the Indian healthcare sector.

According to a report by the Centre for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy (CDDEP) in the US, India has a shortage of around six million doctors and two million nurses. On March 26 2020, India's health ministry issued telemedicine guidelines enabling doctors to write prescrip�ons based on telephone conversa�ons that reduce risks of transmission for medical professionals as well as pa�ents. It also reduces the inconvenience to families, caregivers and social sectors.

"We have seen spike of over 10 �mes and more than 30,000 ci�zens across the country have benefi�ed during the month of April, 2020, lockdown period", says Dinesh Tyagi, Chief Execu�ve Officer of CSC e-Governance Services company promoted by Indian government.

"Prior to the lockdown, we had an average of 200-300 telemedicine consulta�ons by 30 doctors of different specialisa�ons daily, resul�ng in more than 6,000 calls monthly," he added.

With India's public health expenditure just 1.28% of its GDP, there is a persistent shortage of doctors, health workers and hospital beds in the country, especially in rural areas and densely-populated under-developed states.

How mango farmers are adap�ng CSC Grameen eStore under coronavirus lockdown

Villagers are ordering mangoes and lichi directly from the farm - a trend small-scale producers hope will outlast the pandemic.

It could be one of the few economic upsides to a crisis that has emp�ed felled business as Indian lock down against the fast-spreading novel coronavirus.

In Gujarat, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, a farmers' collec�ve said with the help of CSC Grameen eStore, they are making thousands of rupees a week in a season when sales are normally zero.

Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra consis�ng of 98 villages. It is located on the Arabian Sea in the coastal Konkan region of Maharashtra. Devgad is known globally for its exports of locally grown Alphonso mangoes. In Devgad CSC VLE Raj Teli is delivering Alphanso mangoes at doorsteps using CSC Grameen e-Store.

In this holy month of Ramzan, villagers are ge�ng help from CSC e-store. CSC VLE Mo. Azad Patel of Gram panchayat Umaria, Ujjain district (Madhya Pradesh) is providing mangoes and other fruits/vegetables through CSC Grameen e-store. The special thing is that it is the month of Ramadan and at this �me Muslim society needs fruits for I�ari in the evening. Sharmila B, a resident of Umaria Panchayat, said that due to CSC, she is no longer facing problems for fruits and other necessi�es for I�ar, she thanked to the en�re CSC family.

By selling to people instead of main market, farmers said revenues are close to an all-�me high. Consumers are adop�ng online ordering and home delivery through CSC Grameen eStore, transforming old-fashioned farms into consumer-friendly outlets.

"In two or three weeks we accelerated like five to ten years of growth and change in the industry," said farmer Sudhir from Devgad, Maharashtra."I think we are ge�ng a lot of new people into local produce that have never tried buying from their local farmer before." Ea�ng local is lauded as a way to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of transpor�ng food long distances.

Growers across the country are vulnerable to economic shocks right now because of labour shortages, supply chain disrup�ons and fluctua�ng prices linked to the pandemic, farmers in Maharashtra and Gujarat said.

"The beauty of the CSC Grameen app is it allows a farmer to capture the value of their product at a near-to-retail price with the help of VLEs, and so it's a really a�rac�ve op�on economically for a farmer,” they said.
