THANK YOU! THANK YOU! The pop tabs keep rolling in! It’s always a joyful surprise when I see a big bag in my mailbox, or see some that have been dropped in the little green bag in the hutch outside the church office. This is a continuing project of our St. Charles Golden K Kiwanis Club to help maintain the Ronald McDonald House that was re-cently built near Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. It’s especially delightful to know that classes of school children are col-lecting and donating them to the cause. I can’t think of a project that is so painless as taking the tab off a pop or soup can, and collecting them on the kitchen counter, that does so much good. I know one tab isn’t much, but when we put them all together – wow!Just want you to know your contributions, large or small, are all so appreciated!!! Thank you!!!~Pat Kitner

OUR 40TH SENIOR PASTOR TO BE INSTALLED

Since 1837, our church family has been serving God and our community. On June 12 it will become a part of our ever-developing history when The Reverend David Pattee is installed as our 40th Senior Pastor. Just to be clear, this number of “40” does not include assistant and associate pastors nor interims who have also lovingly served our congregation. And, yes, this is a “Big Deal!” The Reverend Jorge Morales, Illinois Conference Minister, will be officiating the ser-vice. Special friends of Pastor Dave will be participating, such as guest speaker, The Reverend Leah Robberts-Mosser, a graduate of Chicago Theological Seminary (CTS), and present Senior Pastor of Community UCC in Champaign. She is the founding director of DEPTH, a youth program funded by the Eli Lily Foundation at CTS for development of youth ministry and leadership. Pastor Dave met her when they were both on staff at CTS in the Office of Development and External Affairs.Jane Siarny, a Director at InterPlay, a global social movement dedicated to ease connection, human sustainability and play, will be directing part of the service. Rhonda Brown, Vice President of Development at CTS, will be leading parts of the service also. Special music will be provided by Tony Giamberdino, Bellissimo! and our Chancel Choir along with several other guest musicians. No – even with all this liturgy, music and speakers, the service won’t be long and drawn out. Do not despair! And it will be a FUN one, as well as inspiring. Oh, yes. Afterwards, everyone is invited to Rodgers Hall for a light late-afternoon Sunday meal. We do hope everyone will plan to come and witness this historical, holy event in the life of our church.~Pat Kitner

September 16th: THE HOUSE OF MIRTH (1905) by Edith Wharton; discussion at the home of Janet Zohorsky A bestseller when it was originally published nearly a century ago, Wharton’s first literary success was set amid the previously unexplored territory of fashionable, turn-of-the-century New York society, an area with which she was intimately familiar. The tragic love story reveals the destructive effects of wealth and social hypocrisy on Lily Bart, a ravishing beauty. Her downfall begins with a romantic indiscretion, intensifies with an accumula-tion of gambling debts, and climaxes in a maelstrom of social disasters. The House of Mirth reveals Wharton’s compelling gifts as a storyteller and her clear-eyed obser-vations of the savagery beneath the well-bred surface of high society. Made into a successful film (2000), starring Gillian Anderson. November 18th: THE BOOK OF DANIEL (1971) by E. L. Doctorow; discussion at the home of Carol LudemannThe central figure of this novel is a young man whose parents were executed for conspiring to steal atomic secrets for Russia. His name is Daniel Isaacson, and as the story opens, his parents have been dead for many years. He has had a long time to adjust to their deaths. He has not adjusted. It is a book rich in characters, from elderly grandmothers of immigrant culture, to covert radicals of the McCarthy era, to hippie marchers on the Pentagon. It is a book that spans the quarter-century of American life since World War II. It is a book about the nature of Left politics in this country—its sacrificial rites, its peculiar cruelties, its humility, its bitterness. It is a book about some of the beautiful and terrible feelings of childhood. It is about the nature of guilt and innocence, and about the relations of people to nations.January 13th: A GREAT DELIVERANCE (1988) by Elizabeth George; discussion at the home of Denise Dojka To this day, the low, thin wail of an infant can be heard in Keldale’s lush green valleys. Three hundred years ago, as legend goes, the frightened Yorkshire villagers smothered a crying babe in Keldale Abbey, where they’d hidden to escape the ravages of Cromwell’s raiders. Now into Keldale’s pastoral web of old houses and older secrets comes Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Lynley, the eighth earl of Asherton. Along with the redoubtable Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, Lynley has been sent to solve a savage murder that has stunned the peaceful countryside. For fat, unlovely Roberta Teys has been found in her best dress, an axe in her lap, seated in the old stone barn beside her father’s headless corpse. Her first and last words were “I did it. And I’m not sorry.”

2016-2017Novel Approaches

March 10th: EUPHORIA (2014) by Lily King; discussion at the home of Tony and Donna GiamberdinoWinner of the 2014 New England Book Award for Fiction A Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award A Best Book of the Year for: New York Times Book Review, Time, NPR, Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, Newsday, Vogue, New York Magazine, Seattle Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, The Guardian, Kirkus Reviews, Amazon, Publishers Weekly, Our Man in Boston, Oprah.com, Salon. Euphoria is Lily King’s nationally bestselling breakout novel of three young, gifted anthropologists of the 1930s caught in a passionate love tri-angle that threatens their bonds, their careers, and, ultimately, their lives. Inspired by events in the life of revolutionary anthropologist Margaret Mead, Euphoria is “dazzling ... sus-penseful ... brilliant...an exhilarating novel.”—Boston GlobeMay 12th: A MAN CALLED OVE (2013) by Fredrik Backman; discussion at the home of Dave and Marilyn SchaveMeet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict rou-tines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and acciden-tally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. A feel-good story…Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others.

So why is Tara Moffitt not in the pews? She is our new nursery supervisor during Sunday morning worship as of June 1. Thank you for taking over the care of our littlest family members! Tara said she enjoys snuggling the little babies and looks forward to being with the children. Tara and Greg joined our church about 5 years ago. They have three children. Emma will be a freshman at St. Charles North. Brandon will be in 8th grade at Thompson Middle School and Megan will be a 2nd grader at Wasco Elemen-tary School. Both Emma and Brandon will help Tara in the nursery at various times.Tara grew up near St. Louis. She and Greg met at the St. Louis Airport where Tara worked on the grounds crew and Greg was a pilot. After they married, they lived in Madi-son, WI for awhile and then back to Tara’s home town near St. Louis. In 2005, they moved to Joliet and stayed there until they moved to Elburn in 2011. Tara grew up a Southern Baptist and Greg was a Method-ist, but since they married they hadn’t been attending a church. Then when they lived in Joliet, Tara decided to join the Catholic Church where Emma was going to pre-school. When they moved to Elburn, they were looking for a preschool for Megan. After looking at a few other places, they had a tour with Sue Farr, Swing Set director at the time and loved it. In the fall, Tara called to register Megan

and found Kim Barth was the new (and our current) Swing Set director. After meeting Kim and the teachers, Tara knew it was the perfect spot for Megan. They de-cided since Megan already felt comfortable at the church in the preschool, they would visit the church and attend worship on Sunday. They felt welcome immediately and knew this is where they belonged. They joined in 2012.It wasn’t long before Tara was involved in Swing Set Pre-school and in the church. She was on the advisory board for Swing Set when Megan attended. Two years ago Tara assisted in the 2 ½ year old class. This past year she was the lead teacher for the 2 day and the 1 day 2 ½ year olds and taught the 3 year old class. She also assisted in the 4 year old, 4 day class. At church, she has taught Sunday school and helped with VBS. And as I mentioned she is now our nursery coordinator on Sunday morning. As you can see, she loves being with children, but she also helps plan adult activities. She has been on the Congre-gational Life Committee for three years and is currently the chair. Tara’s “free” time is spent mostly with her family. She loves going with the kids to Otter Cove swimming in the summer. She goes to many music lessons, concerts and re-citals. The family enjoys camping in Minocqua, WI. She also enjoys the church book club with her church family.Tara is an active person with a big heart for children and for giving to others. Thank you, Tara, for being with our little children in the nursery.

About the Parlor ArtGallery ExhibitTwo exhibits in one from Wayne and Geneva

This month the exhibit space is divided between two separate contributing artist groups, The Wayne Garden and Art Club, and Beech Street Studio in Geneva. The Wayne Art League was started in the 1950’s at the Little Home Church by the Wayside (UCC) in Wayne, Illinois. Today, they are known as the Wayne Garden and Art Club. The artists styles and subject matter vary as much as the media. The club desires to understand, support and participate in the creative process. Today, they continue to meet every Monday morning either at Little Home Church from fall to late spring. From late spring to late fall they take advantage of the world outside and paint plain air each Monday morning at various locations in the Fox Valley and beyond. With a long history in the community as a group of dedicated fine artists, their work is shared at galleries and venues around the Fox Valley several times a year.In the Narthex area, surrounding the main doors and the windows of the Sanctuary, the second exhibit features fine art in colored pencils, with varied subject matter. The exhibit is the work of the students of Andria Burchett and Beech Street Studio in Geneva.

Outdoor MinistriesInformation and registration forms for all Out-door Ministries summer camps are now available on the CE board in Rodgers Hall as well as on the bulletin board in the Sunday school hallway or online at  il-outdoorministries.org. Sportscamp ( June 19-25) registration is now open.  Spots are limited and filling up fast and the cost is $374.  Scholarships funds are limited this year and will be given out on the basis of need. Please see Tassie Brautigam to request a scholarship.
