A COUNTRY SHOW WITH SOMETHING FOR ALL THE FAMILY!

Over two days of fun and excitement, expect to see the usual line - up of country show exhibits, demonstrations and events culminating in a spectacular fireworks display on Saturday night.

From dairy and beef cattle to local craft, needlework, flowers and cakes, there is a category of exhibits certain to tickle your fancy.

As Robertson prides itself on embracing and reviving many "old" skills, there will be a cheese making section in the pavillion.

The Australian Reptile display will entertain you with interesting facts and deadly reptiles. As well, the Stationary Engines showing us a glimse of the past with steam powered tractors and the like are sure to be of interest.

Other novelty events include the Great Australian Potato Races, push bikes and jig races, women's pumpkin lawn bowls, weight judging competition, hay stacking and the usual rides. Be tempted by the pie eating competition.

Fireworks will end the show after the Saturday Night action packed Demolition Derby.

There are so many highlights associated with Robertson’s annual show it’s hard to single out any particular event. From the moment the gates open on Friday, March 9th until the spectacular fireworks display the following evening, this year’s show program promises to be one of the best ever presented with something for all members of the family.

Over the two days the spotlight will shine on the centre ring where horse and rider team up to impress the judges as they strive for the elusive championship ribbons.

Tickle your Fancy at the 2012 Robertson ShowEarly indications are that the Hindmarsh Pavilion will be a popular venue as patrons cast their eyes over a vast number of categories including craft, needlework, flowers and cakes on display.

Don’t forget the high quality on exhibit with the Dairy and Beef cattle strutting their stuff while numbers in the poultry and dog sections have surpassed all expectations.

Throw in a host of novelty events such as the Great Australian Potato Race, Demolition Derby, push bikes and jig races, women’s pumpkin lawn

bowls, weight judging competition, hay stacking and the unusual rides for those who like to be daring, while those wanting to test their appetite can enter the pie eating competition.

Old timers will be able to recall memories of the past when the Berrima District Old Machinery Club promotes an intriguing range of machines from days gone by.

Whatever tickles your fancy rest assure you will find it at this year’s Robertson Show.

The Rose Show is open on Saturday 11am to 5pm with the official opening at 11.30am by Jennie Churchill, Garden Author and TV Presenter.

On Sunday the Show opens at 10am and concludes with the sale of Roses at 4pm.

Along with the Rose Display there will also be an Art Exhibition. Stalls will include Gill's Card Making, Estate Gardening Tools, Shepherds Hill Nursery and other local nurseries,

The village of Thirlmere will once again host the Thirlmere Festival of Steam early in March. Enjoy all the fun of a country fair with entertainment, parades, guided tours of the Rail Museum and Steam Train Rides.

It's on again in 2012! The Swapmeet and Family Market Day will be held in Oakdale and promises to be lots of fun with stalls, a jumping castle, face painting, hot food and coffee, classic car displays and more...

If you enjoy a good old fashioned country show, then you can look forward to the Robertson Show during March. This two day event has all the excitement of a large regional show with the usual line up of interesting agricultural attractions as well as novelty events and sideshows.

Bowral will host the Dan Murphy’s Food and Wine Festival at Bong Bong Picnic Racecourse early in March. The Festival will showcase not only wines, but also local produce and culinary demonstrations from local chefs. Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including a number of small boutique art

galleries such as Struggletown Fine Arts Complex. Campbelltown Arts Centre and the Campbelltown Entertainment and Exhibition Centre are the entertainment heart of Macarthur.

Well, here we are into another year. It is hard to imagine where the time goes. For those of you who are well and truly into gardening, the growth rate of plants over the last few months surely shows us where time goes.

The summer season so far has been great for gardening with the variety of weather conditions from warm hot days to cooler wet days. This all bodes well for great growing conditions for plants but unfortunately these conditions also bring with it a few things we need to keep an eye out for.

Plants will have made a lot of supple new growth, and as we move into autumn this growth can have a light trim to thicken up the branches leading into winter.

It seems odd to be talking about winter at this stage but it creeps up

on us and a lot of the maintenance we should have carried out in late summer/autumn has been let go and can be too late for some plants.

Dead heading perennials and shrubs will, in some cases, encourage a late summer flush of flowers and many of these flower heads can be used in floral arrangements within the home. A good example of this are the beautiful dry heads of Hydrangea. These combined with some “in season” flowers make a lovely floral arrangement.

Be vigilant for insect attack on the new supple foliage and spray with a systemic insecticide. Late fungal activity on roses can cause the plant to become unsightly. Pick of the diseased leaves and dispose into a plastic bag. A control spray of a quality fungicide will keep any future activity at bay.

Cool Climate Gardening - Autumn Ramblings

For those of you that are into the vegetable garden, now is the time to start preparing the garden for your Autumn plantings. Fork the bed over adding some animal manures and lime. Leave for a week or so and fork over again ready for the planting of carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and any other seasonal vegetable that suits your taste buds.

In the flower garden pansy, viola, primula, poppies and other Autumn/Winter flowering annuals will start appearing in your nursery. Using the same method of soil preparation as for your vegetables, get these in soon for a great display in Autumn and Winter.

Berrima - a shoppers paradiseThe name Berrima is said to be a word from the language of the Dharawal Aborigines who once occupied the area and means 'Black Swan'.

Traditionally, wine growing in Australia took place in warmer regions where access to water for irrigation made growing grapes easier. More and more visitors to the Southern Highlands are discovering the many attractions of Robertson.

The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland. Robertson is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands, on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive.

There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes. Nearby are three of the longest drop waterfalls in Australia. They all plunge from rugged sandstone escarpments into rainforest canyons and valleys. Robbo Spuds are always on sale in season (December to April).

Goulburn is a thriving rural and commercial centre and offers country style living and hospitality.

The city is rich in heritage and natural beauty and any visitor interested in the history and development of this beautiful city will be delighted during guided and self guided tours of historic sites, homesteads, cathedrals, cemeteries and points of interest.

The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards.

By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new County Argyle. It is home to the Big Merino & the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise.

In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products.

St Saviour's Cathedral 1874 to 1884 - one of the finest white sandstone cathedrals in the Southern Hemisphere. The splendid bell-tower, soaring windows and massive stone work are the first impressions one has of the building. The Cathedral and Hall were

designed by Edmund T. Blackett at the peak of his career.

The Forster and Andrews organ contained 43 stops and 2252 pipes when installed but has been modified several times since. It is regarded as one of the best pipe organs in Australia and one of the most sought after by organists who wish to play it. Open 10am and 4pm. Ph: 4821 2206

Goulburn Historic Waterworks- a part of Australia's heritage The Goulburn Historic Waterworks is located on the banks of the Wollondilly River. The Waterworks has fully operational steam engines; the 1883 Appleby Bros. beam engine and the 1860s Hick Hargreaves corliss valve engine. The beam engine dates to the 1880s when it was installed to pump water for Goulburn.

The Waterworks is of national significance as it is the only complete, workable, steam powered municipal water supply left in its original location

Riversdale Historic Homestead– a historic 1830s Inn Riversdale was purchased in 1875 by Edward Twynam who later became Surveyor General of NSW. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1967 from the Twynam family and is set in beautiful flowering gardens. The Inn is furnished as a mid-19th century colonial cottage.

Riversdale is an ideal venue to just have a picnic or to book a function, a wedding or a christening.

Generations, on display until 26 February, investigates notions of dislocation, isolation, assimilation and loss and how these impact on artists' personal and cultural identity.

Local: Current 2011 is the third in a series of yearly exhibitions which investigate Illawarra artists’ practice, and is on display until 12 February 2012.

Collections of Hopes and Dreams curated by Eva Castle, on display until 4 March, is an exhibition about the significance of personal objects and images for families and communities.

Postcodes from the Edge features small format paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture submitted by Illawarra artists for the Friends of Wollongong City Gallery $5,000 art prize. The winner will be announced on Friday 17 February. until 15 April.

Two Illawarra printmakers offer their perspectives on the human in Mask and Symbol, on display 25 February - 20 May. Gillian Day’s prints imagine traces of human endeavour and the magic inherent in natural forms, while Alannah Dreise explores dramatic personae and the gathering of communities for celebration.

throughout the day.
