As Scotland’s environment watchdog, our work makes Scotland a cleaner, greener place to live and creates a sustainable legacy for future generations. A lot has changed since SEPA was established in 1996. The environmental challenges that need to be tackled in 2012-2013 are more complex, with higher expectations of the public sector generally, and economic conditions demanding increased efficiency, effectiveness and value.
SEPA is adapting and changing to meet these demands. Part of this will mean modifying our regulatory approach to one that is based on simpler, streamlined and better-targeted regulatory controls, coupled with an appropriate system of advice and meaningful enforcement.
Informed by international best practice and our work with the Regulatory Review Group, our approach to ‘Better Regulation’ will benefit regulated customers by simplifying systems and processes and reducing costs. Crucially, by taking a more risk-based, proportionate approach we can focus our resources effectively on tackling the issues that will make the biggest difference to protecting communities and improving Scotland’s environment.
We have regulatory staff and scientific experts operating throughout Scotland and their job is to identify and tackle the most important environmental issues, locally, nationally and internationally. This means a lot of partnership working alongside our core regulatory and environmental monitoring and reporting roles.
Benefiting the environment, communities and industry
All our work contributes to protecting and improving Scotland’s unique and beautiful environment. For more information on SEPA and our activities, go to www.sepa.org.uk
