BTEC Higher NationalCertifi cates/Diplomas(HNCs/HNDs)What are they? These higher education qualifi cations focus on industry skills and are valued by employers as analternative to university. HNCs and HNDs are mainly assessed through assignments, projects and practical tasks that you complete throughout the course – not usually through exams. They’re designed to lead straight to a career in industry or on to further study at university.

How long do they take?HNCs take between one and two years to complete depending on the study route you choose, and are generally equivalent to the fi rst year of a full Honours degree at university. You can continue your studies at Bedford College by moving on to the HND qualifi cation after your HNC.

HNDs represent the next level of study up from HNCs, taking an additional one to two years to complete depending on the study route you choose. They are generally equivalent to the second year of university and you can ‘top-up’ your HND with a further one or two years of study at university to convert it to a full Honours degree. Alternatively a HND is a standalone, recognised qualifi cation that prepares you to progress directly into employment.

Foundation Degrees(FdA/FdSc)What are they?Foundation Degrees are higher educationqualifi cations that have been developed withemployers to advance your skills in a specifi cindustry sector. They are assessed throughproject work, reports, exams, practical workand presentations.

How long do they take?A Foundation Degree takes two to four years to complete depending on the study route you choose. It is equivalent to the fi rst two years of a full Honours degree and, just like HNDs, you will have the option to ‘top-up’ your Foundation Degree and convert it into a full Honours degree through an additional year of study at university.

Art & Design BTECFoundation Diploma(Pre-Degree)What is it?This course is designed to prepare students wishing to enter higher education within the fi eld of art and design. It’s a widely recognised pathway that aims to give you further knowledge of a range ofdisciplines so that you can choose where tospecialise. The course is often required by many colleges and universities for entry on to art and design-related higher education courses.

How long does it take? The Art & Design Foundation Diploma takes one year to complete. Find out more about this course on page 14.

Teaching qualifi cationsWhat are they?We offer Certifi cate of Education (Cert Ed) andProfessional Graduate Certifi cate in Education (PGCE) qualifi cations that are designed to build your teaching skills if you’re looking to begin or develop your career within post-compulsory education. We also offer University Certifi cates in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) across a range of teaching skill areas which may be taken as building blocks towards a full Bachelor’sdegree qualifi cation.

How long do they take? Our Cert Ed and PGCE courses take one to two years to complete depending on the study route you choose. Each of our CPD UniversityCertifi cates is offered on a part-time basis viaclassroom learning, distance learning or througha combination of both, and take one year tocomplete. Find out more about our teachingcourses on page 49.

Course details possible through an allocated personal tutor. You will also be taught by subject specialist staff with industry experience.

University linksWe have close links with local universities including the University of Bedfordshire and we liaise with them directly about the entry criteria for applicants and the interviewprocess. Each year, we organise a specific Access Open Day with the University ofBedfordshire so you have the chance to ask the lecturers questions and meet with Access students studying there. In addition, we hope to hold a ‘graduation day’ at the University’s Bedford campus to celebrate student success at the end of the year.

Entry requirementsAccess courses are one year, intensive courses aimed at mature students (19+) who do not have the standard qualifications to enter higher education. GCSE English and mathsis desirable; however, we may considercandidates without these qualifications, depending on an English and maths entry test, where you will need to demonstrate English and maths skills at Level 2, inaddition to interviewing successfully.

It is very important to research the entry criteria of the universities you wouldeventually like to apply to. You will often need a minimum of GCSE English and maths, in addition to your Access qualification, for entry on to degree-level courses. We currently offer GCSE part-time courses, which you can enrol on alongside your Access course to gain these qualifications. Some university courses can be competitive and it’s important to understand the entry requirements prior to applying.

Assessment methodsWe use a range of methods to help you achieve the targets needed to pass the course, including in-class assessments, assignments, individual presentations andan independent research project.

Aged 24 or older?Loans & bursaries to help pay for your courseA low-interest 24+ Advanced Learning Loan is available from Student Finance England (SFE) to pay for your Access course tuition fee. If you go on to complete a designated higher education course, such as a HNC, HND or Foundation Degree, your remaining loan amount will be written off. If you do not go straight to university you’ll only have to start making repayments in the April after you complete your course and only if you’re earning £21,000 per year. Payments will be automatically taken from your earnings through the tax system.

You may also be eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan Bursary that could provide even more financial support in the form of a non-repayable grant to help make your Access course more affordable.

I work part-time as an agency carer but I’ve always wanted to go to

university to study pharmacy, which would enable me to give patients better treatment and make their lives more comfortable.

I really enjoyed chemistry, mathematics andthe science practical exercises, and conductingexperiments was very interesting. For example in biology we checked the catalyst reaction on human tissue from the heart, lungs and kidneys and in chemistry we did experiments which assessed the synthesisof aspirin.

I also think the research work we did isgoing to be invaluable when I get to university. Now I know how to research and reference correctly, which is very important at university and not something that is always taught at A-Level.

My tutors have been brilliant. When I decided to apply for a pharmacy course atuniversity, I realised I needed to do chemistry and even though I was a little bit late, they helped me to catch up and complete the extra units that I needed.

I’ve applied to do pharmacy at the Universityof Hertfordshire, so I hope I can impress them with everything that I’ve learned on this course!

I progressed directly from the Level 3course at Shuttleworth College to

the Animal Management Foundation degree.Originally I hadn’t intended to go on to higher education, but I enjoyed the Level 3 course so much and in particular loved working with the animals in the College’s Animal Unit, which is such a unique facility. I really bonded with the animals, so it made it very diffi cult to leave!

As I expected, the higher education course was quite intense but I was also given some fantastic opportunities. For example, as part of the ecology unit in my fi rst year, I had the chance to go to Hungary for 10 days to meet with fi sh farm experts and representatives from across the EU. Also, as part of the degree, I spent some time volunteering at Wrigglies Exotic Pets in Biggleswade which led to me being offered a part-time job as an Exotic Livestock Technician. So now I get paid to work with cobras, rattlesnakes and large alligators!

My plan is to top-up my degree by completing a BSc Animal Behaviour and Welfare course and then I may even go on to do a Masters. I see my future in the animal management industry and that’s partly because of the great experience I’ve had at Shuttleworth College.

ART & DESIGN

I don’t think I would be where I am now if I hadn’t done the Graphic

Design course at Bedford College. I feel that I had a better experience than some of my friends who went to university. This is primarily because of the one-to-one support I received at the College and the opportunities I had to show people in the industry my work, such as exhibiting at D&AD’s New Blood exhibition in London.

Six design awards were won by our HND Graphic Design students in the YCN 2015 European Design competition.Of all the colleges and universities that entered, Bedford College had the second highest number of winning entries with an equally impressive success rate of 50 per cent.

14 of our students worked within teams on live briefs set by Santander, Syfy, Save the Children and Topdeck Travel. Each student received an award at a ceremony held at the Barbican, London.

This course was part of my Apprenticeship. My role involved

working in every department for at least three months and this allowed me to gain knowledge and experience about the whole company. This course was chosen because it covered all the topics relevant to each department, including: marketing, human resources, fi nance and business strategy.

I’ve enjoyed the human resources modules the most, particularly those that dealt with staff recruitment and development. In fact, I’ve now chosen to specialise in human resources.

I found that studying and working at the same time was not a problem as the tutors gave me enough time to complete all my assignments. They were also very understanding about my circumstances and provided extra help if I needed it. The tutors at the College were very approachable, and their lessons were interactive with activities to involve everyone in the classroom.

This course has defi nitely helped me with my day-to-day work. It has given me the background and theory behind what I do every day. I’ve enjoyed my time at College and I’m coming back in September to do the CIPD in Human Resources Practice.

My ultimate plan is to become a primary school teacher so I looked

into all the different routes I could take to achieve this. I came to an Open Day at the College and spoke to the tutors about this Foundation Degree and realised it suited my learning style, plus I get to put what I learn into practice with the work placements it offers. It also helped that the College course was £6,000 a year, rather than the £9,000 a year that universities charge.

I like the whole course but particularly enjoyed my work placement as a teaching assistant at Orchard and Shepherdswell Academy in Milton Keynes. I was especially pleased to get a placement here because it’s my old primary school and some of my teachers are still there! Next year, we’re going on a trip to Kenya with the course. We’ll be teaching in schools, helping with sports activities and building new facilities. Plus we’ll get a week’s safari when we’re there – it will be amazing!

After I fi nish my Foundation Degree, I’m planning to top-up to a full Honours degree at the University of Bedfordshire. I’ll then take my Postgraduate Certifi cate in Education (PGCE) to become a fully qualifi ed teacher.

I was really happy to win a bronze medal at the World Skills UK

Competitions Finals held at The Skills Show, NEC Birmingham, having qualifi ed in a regional heat. The competition stretched over two days and we worked against the clock to complete tasks. We worked from 9am until 4pm on the fi rst day with one hour for lunch, and the work that we did related to the tasks on the second day, so you really had to stay on the ball. There were thousands of visitors walking around the hall, but I got stuck in and soon didn’t realise they were there.

I started at Bedford College on a Level 3 Extended Diploma after studying Advanced ICT at GCSE. The course at College offered a lot more choice of modules than an A-Level course, and enabled me to focus on networking in my second year.

The Foundation Degree course really does get you on your feet for a career in the industry. The course has taught me about the business side of networking, as well as the technical side thanks to the brilliant facilities. I enjoy all aspects of the course and now have a part-time job with a local networking company. The tutors have been great; they are very supportive and always there to lend a hand if you need it.

After College, I would like to continue to build up my qualifi cations while working in the industry. In the meantime, I’m going for gold at next year’s World Skills competition!

I originally trained to be a plumber but then decided to carry on with

my studies and take this Foundation Degree as I actually quite enjoyed the academic side of construction.

One of the best things about the course was the fact that I was part of a small, close-knit group. I also really enjoyed learning u-value calculations, which involved thermal engineering, and studying a variety of subjects from heavy maths to contract management, which gave us a good breadth of knowledge. The tutors were great, very involved and they really cared about our success. We also built up a strong network through the tutors and the other students on the course. In fact, I ended up getting a job through a fellow student and was able to work my way up to senior quantity surveyor using the knowledge and skills I had gained during my Foundation Degree.

It’s defi nitely a worthwhile course, with people from a wide range of roles in construction studying together including site managers, quantity surveyors and contract managers. Most of the students in my group were quite senior in the industry and I feel the specialist skills I learned have helped me to stand apart in the competitive job market.

I’ve always been interested in how things are made and this is what

mechanical engineering is all about, so it made sense for me to choose this course. Bedford College is now one of the only places in this region that runs this HND course.

When I left school I did an Apprenticeship then got a job at the Medical Research Council and was fortunate that they were willing to sponsor me to study this course. They’ve been very fl exible, allowing me to go into College for my course one day a week.

I enjoy a lot of the analytical subjects such as heat transfer and fl uid mechanics and I’ve found that the tutor’s enthusiasm and support helps me to learn more.

There’s no doubt that this course has helped me to progress my career. Once you know the theory behind what you’re doing every day, it makes you more effi cient. Now, when faced with a problem, I can get straight to the solution because I’ve already learned it on the course.

It’s certainly worthwhile getting the qualifi cations you need to improve your skillset and progress with your career. In theworkplace, I’ve found that opportunities arisefor those who have the right experience combined with the right training. And there is also the pay progression, with a higher education qualifi cation you are more likely toget promoted and paid more, which all helps.

HOSPITALITY

I started at Level 1, and then went on to Level 2 and Level 3, before

progressing on to this higher education course. My family are involved in the hospitality industry, but I wanted to learn the theory and understand how the UK sector works. I have also been fi tting my studies around my family commitments so the College has been absolutely fantastic for me because it’s local.

I looked into similar courses run by local universities but one of the main reasons why I chose Bedford College was because it was much cheaper. My tutors also told me about the 24+ Loan which has reallyhelped me.

The most interesting part of the course has been learning about management theory and marketing. I also enjoy the fi nance part of the course, which surprised me as I’m not keen on the money side of things!

My teacher is very dedicated and has a lot of industry experience. To be honest, she’s been a role model for me and she’s helped me to develop my sector knowledge, English language and academic skills.

I’ve just started a small cake decorating business and, if I can expand this and get funding, my aim is to open a shop in a few years. I’ve also recently applied for apart-time job as a team leader in a local school. This course has given me theself-belief and confi dence that I needed to apply. I’m looking forward to coming back next year to complete the HND at Level 5 as I really enjoy learning and studying here.

TEACHER EDUCATION & TRAINING

This is the only college locally to offer the intensive PGCE course,

which enables you to gain the qualifi cation in a year. Initially I had planned to do the course part-time but because this intensive course is full-time I actually ended up leaving my job so that I could get my qualifi cation as quickly as possible.

I enjoyed the practical side of the course, teaching the students, because I was able to put into practice the theory that I learned in class such as lesson planning, different teaching styles and marking.

I feel very lucky that I was surrounded by a great team of teaching professionals including my tutors and my mentor who gave me a lot of advice. There is no doubt that the course has boosted my confi dence and given me the skills I needed to get my fi rst full-time teaching job.

TRAVEL & TOURISM

I love travelling, discovering different cultures, learning new

languages and meeting new people so the travel and tourism industry has always appealed to me. I had already completed the Level 3 course but wanted to study the subject in more depth at Levels 4 and 5 so there would be more job opportunities available to me.

I looked at university options, but the cost was a big factor. It was much more expensive at university – the College course was nearly half the price, so I decided it was more cost effective to stay at Bedford College and gain my higher education qualifi cation that way.

I love the fact that it’s all coursework and there are no exams. It’s all assignment based for each unit and, if you fail, you get feedback and advice about how to improve and you have a chance to do it again. This process is much better for my learning style as I can learn from my mistakes. My organisational skills have improved dramatically because I have to plan my time well to ensure I meet all my coursework deadlines. I’ve also gained a lot more confi dence when giving presentations.

Overall, the course has been really good, I’ve learnt a lot, the teachers have been very helpful and it’s been a great place to learn.

3. Check your application routeIn the listing for your course you’ll see different ways to apply depending on the study routeyou choose. Here’s an explanation of theapplication methods.

UCAS applicationsYou’ll need to apply through the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) onlineapplication process at www.ucas.com. UCAS applications require you to provide a unique code to identify which course you are applying for and which education institution it’s being offered at – don’t worry; the codes you need to use in your application are shown in the individual course entries under ‘how to apply’.

When applying for a course you must meet the entry requirements – these may include certain subjects and/or grades you need to have already gained, as well as a minimum ‘points total’ that is based on the UCAS tariff. The UCAS tariff converts different qualifi cations and grades into equivalent point values (e.g. an A grade at A-Level is worth 120 points, a B grade is worth 100 points and so on) – to fi nd out what your existing qualifi cations are worth, just use the tariff table online atwww.ucas.com

DeadlinesYou should aim to submit your application to UCAS by 15 January 2016, although you can apply for our Art & Design courses up to 24 March 2016. We can take applications received through UCAS up to 30 June 2016 if there are still vacancies on your course – but we advise you to apply earlier.

Direct applicationsIf your course says ‘Apply direct to Bedford College’. Just fi nd your course viawww.bedford.ac.uk/courses and click ‘Apply’.You can apply for a course at any time online or by completing a paper application form and postingit to us for free – download a copy atwww.bedford.ac.uk/downloadsor request one by calling us on 01234 291000.

4. Attend an interviewFor some of our courses, after you apply you’llneed to attend an interview with one of our tutorswho’ll be able to ensure that the course you’ve chosen is right for you, as well as answer any questions you may have.

5. Confi rmationYou’ll then be notifi ed of the outcome of your application either by the College (for directapplications) or through UCAS (for UCASapplications). The notifi cation will explain to you what you need to do next if you have been offered a place on your course.

6. Come to our HE Welcome Day –Friday 16 September 2016Our HE Welcome Day gives you the chance to meet your tutors, make friends with students who’ve also applied for your course and fi nd out a lot more about what you’ll be studying in the coming year so, by the time your course begins, you’ll know exactly what to expect.
