2017 venting about ventilation, ranting about renovation inkubation session chair
Southern Graphics International Conference, Atlanta, Georgia. March 2017.
The frustrations inherent in printshop renovations require patience, commitment, and a good sense of humor. In 2012-15 I designed and managed a total renovation of the Kansas State Printmaking facilities. We now utilize some of the safest, most innovative industrial ventilation available. This incubator mixed technical information with a humorous look at challenges that arise when working with university facilities, administration, engineers, and vendors. Join me in sharing contacts made and lessons learned improving your commercial, academic, independent, or personal shop. Together we can empower printmakers and students with the knowledge necessary to advocate for safe, efficient facilities.

2008 to 2015 Art Department Project Manager, Renovation and Ventilation of 3rd Floor of Kansas State University Art Department, Willard Hall.
I was entrusted by my department and college to serve as project manager of a major renovation to the art department. In addition to designing and planning the entire printmaking area renovation, I worked on behalf of other area coordinators to ensure their requests were met, and played an instrumental role in securing funding for all three phases of the project. Amongst many improvements, Kansas State University now has some of the safest, most advanced industrial ventilation available. The print studios, photography darkrooms, metals shops, drawing and painting studios were renovated and ventilated under my supervision.
Working in consultation with a facilities project manager, an engineering firm, fabricators/vendors, environmental health and safety, and contractors I designed all components in the print shops and oversaw their implementation. This includes 3 custom designed industrial spray booths for airborne particulates, attic mounted compressor for airbrush aquatinting, 25 running feet of custom designed slot exhaustion ventilation with integrated flammable and acid cabinetry, a custom canopy hood system for plate smoking, flexible extraction arms for presswork, general ventilation for serigraphy and photographic processes, a complete overhaul of the acid room with large format foot pedal controlled polypropylene sinks, acid proof counters and cabinetry, 5 vertical etching tanks, spill containment pallets, compressed air bubblers, electrolytic etching systems, and a custom designed stainless steel large format paper soaking sink.
