Dear customers andbusiness partners ofSchrack Seconet AG,

It was less than ten years agothat the then Austrian Chancellorannounced in the media: “There’sno shortage of nursing and

care services in Austria!” There’s no pointdiscussing whether he was right or wrong. His statement, however, has made manypeople in our country sensitive to the issue. There is no denying that our society ischanging. The average age of the populationand the average life expectancy of men andwomen is continuously rising. Many oldpeople are living in single households; theconcept of the extended family, where youngpeople take care of their elders, is a thingof the past.

Unfortunately, a longer life not alwaysgoes hand in hand with more years in goodhealth. In addition to physical impairmentsit is in particular physical diseases, primarilydementia, that have increased. Geriatrics, the field of medicine focusing on healthin old age, as well as on all aspectsof diseases in the elderly, is gainingimportance. The federal provinces andcommunities are increasingly respondingto these developments and so does theolder generation. More and more peopletake advantage of the nursing and geriatriccentres offered and no longer hesitate tomake use of comprehensive care services.

These health centres offer high-levelservices and high standards of medical care.Their intention is to provide their customerswith the standard of living they were usedto before. This includes, among other things, communication and information. We arevery pleased that many of these facilitiesuse Schrack Seconet systems to make a safeand communicative life for their residentspossible also in old age.

Yours,

ingle mode or multi mode? Thatis the question for all thosewho have to bridge large

distances in fire alarm technology.Using fibre optics technology, networking distances are becomingconsiderably larger.

The meshed network Integral LANpermits the networking of up to 16 firealarm panels. Using this technology, multiple and freely selectable topologiesas well as multiple links between theindividual network nodes can beimplemented. And it can still be operatedcomfortably from one site. Despite itsdistributed set-up, the system acts likea classical “central” fire alarm panel.

Up to now this could only be donevia a copper line, using the RS-485transmission standard, over a distanceof 1,200 meters max. Larger distancescould only be covered by usingan external converter. For some time now,Schrack Seconet hasbeen offering boardsspecifically developedfor fire alarm panelsIntegral IP MX andIntegral IP CX, makingit possible to set up afibre optics link directlyfrom the panel.

When using thes ing l e -mode (FXS)variant, objects up to adistance of 10 kilometrescan be integrated intothe system withoutproblems. When using

the multi-mode (FXM) variant, distancesof up to 2000 meters are possible. In addition to these benefits, fibreoptics technology also makes possiblean increase of transmission speed.

“Only Schrack Seconet offers fibreoptics networking directly from thepanel without the use of an external

converter,” says Andreas Haumer,Product Manager in the Schrack SeconetCenter of Competence for the sectorfire alarm systems, about the advantagesof the new fibre optics networkingboards. “This solution is totally new onthe market and it will increase securitydecisively!”

owerful, future-proof, easy and intuitive handling –the premium technology of the large fire alarm

panels from Schrack Seconet has been integrated alsoin the smallest member of the family, the Integral IP BX. Ituses the well-tried Integral IP hardware technology as wellas the same software and peripheral equipment. Thereforethe one-loop panel offers highest-level protection also insmall-scale projects.

Integral IP BX is the only small fire alarm panel on themarket that provides easy networking via existing LANnetworks combined with great reliability and thus meets thespecial requirements of small objects which are to be protectedin a network. Similar to a computer the panels are reliably andsecurely connected via a protected data link, the “virtualnetwork”, with the existing network. Thanks to the availabilityof all data in the network, any relevant information can beretrieved and processed at a central site. In addition, the panelscan be accessed from any site via smartphones or tablet PCs dueto intelligent IP applications. It goes without saying thatIntegral IP BX meets the highest security standard and is VdScertified as well as compliant with EN 54-2 and EN 54-2.

Due to the unique features of Integral IP BX, many companiesin Austria and other countries have opted for this powerful andcompact fire alarm panel, such as one of the largest Europeanwastewater plants in Bucharest or the solar power plant of aSpanish investor in Vanju Mare. What makes the two projects inRomania so special is that several Integral IP BX panels areinterconnected over a large area and connected via the existingIntranet. In the Bucharest project Schrack Seconet’s systemsolution supports data transmission over the existing WAN (WideArea Network) of the company, which extends over the entirecity. The benefits are obvious: Since the system can be easilyintegrated into the existing customer network there is no need

for additional installation work between the panels. Theusual costs for communication links can be permanentlysaved. The operators of the two projects have opted for theeasy control of the entire system by means of the controlstation SecoLOG, which automatically processes allinformation that is required for the assessment of a risksituation. Risks can be detected quickly, so that in case ofan alarm the right decisions can be made quickly. Thanksto intelligent IP applications the panel can also be accessedon the go via smartphones or tablet PCs.

chrack Seconet and Zgonc – two companies whichnot only share their Austrian background but alsoa common philosophy. This may very well be the

reason why business relations between the two Austriancompanies have been so good over the years. Bothcompanies focus on high-quality products and first-classspecialist consulting.

Quality, performance and price have to be a convincingpackage. This is what has made Zgonc a real partner for itscustomers and renowned as the real expert shop for tools, machines, construction and gardening tools all over Austria. And the company not only lives by these values itself but alsoexpects them from its partners. Therefore it is quite natural

that it puts its trust in the systems from Schrack Seconet. Thetrust in the company, the responsible people and the qualityof the products is essential and has been mutual in thisbusiness relationship for many years.

Schrack Seconet is responsible for safety and security withfire alarm systems from the first to the latest generation at17 of 20 Zgonc locations in Austria. Also intrusion-detectionsystems for the protection of various sectors are continuouslyinstalled in the branches. And soon the Zgonc headquarterswill follow suit. After numerous reconstructions, refurbishments, expansions and complete renovations in the branches, the twocompanies look forward to the continuing flourishing of thisspecial business relationship.

uring the past two decades the imageof the older generation in oursociety has undergone a profound

hile such a change towards apositive view of aging is of course

very positive, it is not always easyto get older and sometimes it is connectedwith an increased need for care. Demographicdevelopments show that our life expectancyincreases. The other side of the coin is thatmore and more people in our country needcare in their old age, as they can cope withmany things in their daily lives only withdifficulty or only with the help of others. Therefore, provision for care is one of thecentral issues for the future. Already todaythe need for care facilities in Austria is veryhigh and there will be a considerable increaseduring the years to come.

Austria iscontinuouslygetting older,a n d q u i t erapidly so.This can beseen from the

results of the 2012 population forecast, prepared by Statistics Austria. The averageage of the Austrian population is 41.8 years.Until 2060 another increase of the averageage of more than five years is expected. In future a heavy increase in particularof people aged 65+ is to be expected.

Currently the share of this agegroup is 18 percent. From2030 onwards this share willgrow to 24 percent. Since lifeexpectancy increases as well –in men it is currently 78.1, inwomen it is 83.4 years – alsoa continuous increase of thepeople in need of care has tobe expected. These facts posea great challenge to Austriansocial policy. To guaranteethe continuing high level ofthe care system, suitable care

models and forms of living have to becreated all over Austria and nursing andcare capacities have to be stepped up.

Milestones in thegeriatric concept

The geriatric concept, which was adoptedby the municipal council in 2004, is thebasis for making sure that the City ofVienna can meet future challenges until2015 and dramatically improves livingconditions of people in need of care. Specialemphasis is placed on the highest nursingstandards as well as medical and therapeuticcare. Given the increasing number of peoplesuffering from dementia, also special livingareas are being created which cater to theirspecial needs.

New building program inVienna is setting an example

Among the new facilities in Viennaare, among others, those of the ViennaHospital Holding. In 2010 the nursingresidence Leopoldstadt, which was builtby the cooperative building cooperationGESIBA, was completed. The houseoffers comprehensive service to more than

300 people in need of nursing care. Thesectors for short-term care, for long-termcare as well as for persons suffering fromdementia guarantee a variety of the mostadvanced options for socio-medical therapyand care.

Senior citizens’ residence Meidling, opened in 2011, was built by KabelwerkBauträger GmbH on the area of Kabeland Drahtwerke AG, which was closeddown in 1997. The facility houses a totalof 256 elderly or chronically ill people, who are accommodated in modern andcomfortable single or double rooms withrecessed balconies and receive the bestnursing care. A therapy and a dementiagarden offer a pleasant change from theireveryday routines and stimulate memory.

Tailor-madehigh-tech systems

Safety and security is a must in nursingfacilities. Therefore appropriate measuresfor the protection of people and assetshave to be taken. The best medical, nursingand therapeutic care, therefore, is the mostimportant goal of the Vienna HospitalHolding. Schrack Seconet has been foundto be the best bidder for meeting thesafety and security demands of the twonursing homes.

After all, trouble-free communication ineveryday nursing and care is of decisiveimportance and often even vital. Thesystems must be user friendly, andtrouble-free operation even in extremesituations is a must as well. VISOCALL IPis an important communication component. The system guarantees the seamlessinterconnection of all people, rooms andfacilities in the entire building. VISOCALLIP focuses on ease of operation and userbenefits: Only one device for controllingall technical facilities, such as nurse call,TV, radio, telephone and shutters. Themultimedia communication platformoffers the highest security, 100% systemavailability and it lessens the work burdenof the staff.

People with dementia are oftendisoriented and therefore have to beconstantly monitored to make sure thatthey do not hurt themselves if theyunintentionally leave the building or apredefined area. SecurWATCH, the systemfor disoriented people, creates safety forthe people concerned by alerting the staffas soon as a resident leaves the areas ofthe nursing home.

Nursing facilities also need intelligentfire alarm technology, which has to workreliably. A great number of fire detectors inall stories and several Integral subpanelscreate a versatile network around thepatients’ safety.

Safety for Norwegiannursing facilities

Also in other countries SchrackSeconet solutions have broughtmany nursing homes to a state-of-the-art level. In nine Norwegiannursing homes the communicationsystem VISOCALL IP networkspatients, staff and doctors quicklyand reliably. The projects wereimplemented together with a localpartner company. In addition, aframework contract with the Cityof Oslo guarantees the equipmentof further nursing homes in thefuture.

he VISOCALL IP communication systemoffers a lot of benefits to operators of hospitalsand senior citizens’ residences. It increases

security, information and comfort for patients, doctors and nursing staff, and, of course, also forthe responsibles of technology and administration. The St. Vincenz Gruppe Ruhr has decided toinstall VISOCALL IP. Fire & Care has talked tothe Head of Technology, Mr. Olaf Jahnke, aboutthe advantages of VISOCALL IP.

F&C: In your Ruhr Rheumatology Center you haveopted for the communication system VISOCALL IP.Why did you choose this system?

Olaf Jahnke: As we are already successfully operatingVISOCALL IP in one of the locations of St. VincenzGruppe Ruhr, the St. Anna Hospital Herne, it wasquite natural to continue using this product. The newIP technology is very convenient for us, as we alreadyhave a specialised technology network at St. Anna, overwhich the complete building automation as well as thedocumentation of the A0 values and the 120-odd singleroom cooling systems are connected via BAC networkand servers. Another hospital is also monitored usingthis network. This concept is also used in the newhospital, where we will also integrate VISOCALL IP. Inthis way we can do without a traditional telephone systemand have only very little installation effort. The fact thatuniform operation, troubleshooting and repair is offeredthroughout the group for the technical staff, which isresponsible for three hospitals, is yet another benefit.

F&C: In the RuhrR h e u m a t o l o g yCenter the TV signalis no longer fed inconventionally via anantenna network butvia the VISOCALL IPnetwork. How highwould you r a t ethe added value ofthis convergent IPnetwork?

Olaf Jahnke: The IP network makes possible a highertransmission quality, in particular in case of transmissionsof live surgery in HD quality from our operating theatres, which we also make available in HD quality to ourpatients. In addition, we can offer HD transmissions inthe movie and soccer fields, which is not sufficientlypossible with the existing TV network in our otherlocations.

F&C: What are the future areas of use for IP technology? In what direction will this technology develop?

Olaf Jahnke: As I have already mentioned, we are alreadymaking wide use of IP technology, for example in buildingautomation, A0 documentation of cleaning machines, lighting control or the fire alarm control station. The bigadvantage is that there will only be one type of installation.

F&C: Future-proofness is an essential factor in allinvestment decisions. How future-proof is IP technology?

Olaf Jahnke: IP technology is setting the trend whenit comes to sustainable future use. However, its use callsfor a very close internal cooperation between the technicaldepartment and the IT department, something thatworks very well at our St. Vincenz Gruppe.

VISOCALL IP –careful and sustainable design

he clinical center Paderborn hasbeen recently equipped with theVISOCALL IP communication

system from Schrack Seconet. The Germanengineering office GNUSE was responsible for theentire planning and project process. Detlef Zinser, who for decades has been using communicationsystems from Schrack Seconet in the projects he isresponsible for, explains why he appreciates IPtechnology so much.

F&C: What are the decisive criteria for you in thetechnical planning process of a hospital for using acertain type of communication system?

Detlef Zinser: In case of the clinical center Paderbornwe had to ponder whether to use a standard nurse callsystem or whether to opt for new future-orientedtechnologies. Therefore we have decided to installVISOCALL IP.

F&C: Future-proofness is an important issue in allinvestments. How high would you rate VISOCALL IPin this respect?

Detlef Zinser: The systems that come with IP technologyare filling a gap, as they are technologically open. Thus,

as a first step, the nurse call function is guaranteed inthe Clinical Center Paderborn. However, already nowthe course has been set to be able to change the systemsof different sectors, such as TV, telephone or themonitoring systems. Given the fast technological progressin the IP sector, careful consideration is a necessity. Thecabling effort for the various sectors, such as IT, nursecall, telephone, TV and radio, DECT, monitoring, etc.,required up to now has been enormous and IP technologybrings about considerable cost savings, both duringinstallation and in operation. Always, of course, takingspecial account of applicable standards and regulations.

F&C: In what direction will IP technology develop andwhat do you think will this mean for its use in hospitalsand senior citizens’ residences?

Detlef Zinser: Basically, the use of IP technologyenables the Clinical Center Paderborn to respond totechnological progress without having to considerstructural measures, such as sanitation involving openingof ceilings and subsequent installation of cables. On thisbasis, the higher initial price of the new system technologyis compensated for quickly, if you can save the effort ofhaving to install just one cable per sickbed subsequently.Of course this brings many benefits for the operatorsin terms of costs and efficiency.

GNUSE Engineering Office wasfounded in 1974. Its focus is on theplanning of electrotechnical systemsin existing as well as plannedhospitals for public and privatecustomers. The scope of servicescomprises all sectors of theOrdinance on fees for architectsand engineers (HOAI), specialisingon the sectors electrical engineering, communications engineering, information engineering andmaterials handling, in particularin the health and social sector.57 employees are active in thefour locations in Berlin, Erfurt,Gütersloh and Recklinghausen. With about 1,600 completed andongoing projects the companyimpressively demonstrates its greatperformance.
