Frequently asked questions answered for those looking for a unique, faith-filled experience

Why a Catholic School? Catholic high schools are unique

faith-centered communities that inte-grate thinking and believing in ways that encourage intellectual growth and nurture faith and inspiration. They cre-ate a supportive and challenging climate which affirms the dignity of all persons within the school community.

Which school is right for us? God made each one of us unique

with special gifts and needs. High school is a new destination along the journey of faith and education. As one begins the task of choosing a Catholic high school, one will discover that each has its own qualities.

When should we start looking?

• Sixth grade is the time for families to start considering which high school would be most appropriate for the stu-dent. At this grade level, the approach should be low key and not pressured. Each student has different needs and every high school should be considered for its various strengths.

• Seventh grade students should begin thinking about the environment and the activities that are important to them. Students should be open minded and consider all options.

• Eighth grade students will experi-ence many opportunities to finalize the decision on which high school will best meet their needs. Check with the high schools for specific deadlines and proce-dures for admission.

How do we decide on which school?

• Step 1 – Prioritize. List everything that is expected during the high school experience. Evaluate this list and ar-range it in order of importance.

• Step 2 – Visits. Take advantage of freshman-for-a-day programs, open houses, high school information nights, and other special events offered at the high school.

Considerations It is important to evaluate each

high school in light of the student’s needs. Since many students are inter-ested in Catholic education, it is neces-sary to meet all deadlines set by the individual high schools.

Admissions procedures have been established for each school. An outline

of the procedures is available at the individual high schools.

Checking them outOpen house days allow students

and parents to visit and tour the schools, meet faculty, ask questions and gather information.

Staff and Wire Reports

For more than 20 years, the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) has recog-

nized exceptional individuals for their support of education and youth in the United States, and of Catholic education in particular.

NCEA’s St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award and the NCEA President’s Award were created to honor those individuals whose personal or professional philan-thropy or volunteer service has im-pacted U.S. education and our country’s youth in general or Catholic education in particular.

The NCEA will honor individuals and organizations with the NCEA Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Award on Oct. 5 in Washington, D.C. The Seton Award celebrates the honorees’ lifelong devo-tion to Catholic education.

“Outstanding support and service to Catholic education in communities throughout the country is alive and well,” said NCEA president Brother Rob-ert Bimonte. The honorees “are among the champions serving our nation’s youth and proclaiming the good news of Catholic education. This 25th Anniver-sary of the Seton Awards is a land-

The 2015 NCEA Seton Award Honor-ees include:

The Archdiocese of Washington: From the first Mass held in the original 13 colonies in 1634 on St. Clement’s

Island in St. Mary’s County to today’s more than 620,000 Catholics, 95 Catholic schools and over 27,000 Catholic school students, the Archdiocese of Washington embraces a range of vital

services. The Archdiocese also is one of the largest private social service provid-ers in the region with Catholic Chari-ties, Victory Housing and the Spanish Catholic Center, delivering counseling, shelter, adoption and foster care as-sistance, health care, immigration and

legal aid, affordable housing and more to thousands through archdiocesan staff and volunteers.

Robert B. Catell: chairman, Futures In Education, which supports Catholic Education in the Diocese of

Brooklyn and Queens; and Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School, which provides qual-ity college pre-paratory educa-tion to inner city young-sters. Catell is recognized as single-handily providing qual-

ity Catholic education to thousands of youngsters throughout New York City. He is also a board member of Tomor-row’s Hope, which supports Catholic education in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, N.Y. His passion and support for Catholic education today serves to ensure it for future generations.

H. Edward and Ellen Hanway: chairman, Faith In The Future Founda-tion. Hanway and his wife Ellen’s vision has brought new life to quality educa-

tion, identity and culture in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The Hanways have focused on support-ing Catholic school students and have been instrumental in helping disad-

vantaged students who desire a Catholic education.

Bishop Paul S. Loverde: Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia, Bishop Loverde has dedicated himself and steered his diocese to focus on educa-tion, charity and addressing the multicul-tural needs of our area. Bishop Loverde considers his responsibility to the diocese to be his “duty and calling

Begin a family subscription to The Monitor, the official newspaper of the Diocese of Trenton.

As a family with a child enrolled in religious education, at your church or at school, you are entitled to receive a home subscription to The Monitor at the dramatically reduced student/family rate of only $15 per year (regularly $29).

Your subscription also includes a “Green” subscription, designed for families with Internet access. The “Green” edition is a 100% digital replica of The Monitor that is fully searchable and has an archive of nearly one year of back issues. This resource is excellent for students.

WHERE BETTER TO LEARN?

WHO BETTER TO TEACH THEM?

A child’s faith life is built and nurtured by their parents. Our doctrine holds that the family household is the DOMESTIC CHURCH and that PARENTS are the first catechists of their children.

Parents can turn to The Monitor to refresh their own faith education, stay up to date with news and issues in the Church and find resources to help them teach their children and apply what is learned to real life. Having The Monitor in the family home is a consistent, visible and accessible way for your family to cultivate a sense of Catholic identity.

The Monitor... a MUST-READ for our first catechists... PARENTS!

Every issue brings you:

• Reflections on Scripture, Christian life, family and Catholic parenting• Kidz Corner – a child-based faith activity• Stories and resources for youth and young adults... ...And much more!

___YES! I would like to begin a subscription to The Monitor at the special Family Rate. ___1 year @ $15 ____ 2 years @ $30 ____ 3 years @ $45 Offers available to new subscribers only.
