PastesGrease-like materials containing a very highpercentage of solid lubricants. Used for assembly and lubrication of highly loaded, slow moving parts for threaded fasteners.

GreasesSolid to semisolid materials consisting of a lubricating fluid, thickening agent and additives. Used on rolling element bearings and other moving parts.

CompoundsGrease-like materials composed of silicone fluids and silica fillers. Used for their sealing, dielectric, non-metal-to-metal lubricating and release properties.

High-Performance Industrial Lubricating OilsBased on hydroprocessed mineral oils or synthetic base stocks such as polyalphaolefin (PAO) and esters, these lubricating fluids are fortified with carefully selected additives to provide optimum performance and service life while maximizing protection of the equipment and machinery they are designed to lubricate.

Coatings“Lubricating paints”; when applied, these materials cure to form dry, solid lubricant coatings that are bonded to the surface.

DispersionsFinely divided solid lubricants suspended in lubricating fluids; preferred when it is necessary to apply solid lubricants in liquid form.

Substrate PreparationAlthough Dow Corning silicone sealants possess excellent bondstrength, maximum adhesion is only attained on surfaces which areclean and dry. Contaminants, such as dirt, grease, water, tar or rustact as release agents and prevent the formation of durable bonds

It is strongly recommended, therefore, that wet or unclean surfacesbe properly prepared before sealants are applied.

Wipe contaminated surface with a clean, oil-free cloth. Rewipe surface with a suitable cleaner or industrial solvent,

such as mineral spirits, naphtha or ketones. Note: do not cleansurface with detergent or soap and water. (Soap residue mayact as release agent.)

Rough rubber surfaces with sandpaper. Make a spot check todetermine the adhesion of sealants for each application. Bondstrength will increase as the sealant cures.

How to ApplyApply Dow Corning adhesives/sealants to one of the prepared sur-faces, then quickly cover with the other substrate to be bonded. Onexposure to moisture, the freshly applied material will “skin over”in about 5-10 minutes (depending on the product) at room tempera-ture and 50% relative humidity. Any tooling should be completedbefore this skin forms. The surface is easily tooled with a spatula.

Use of PrimerFor maximum adhesion, the use of Dow Corning ® 1200 OS Primeris recommended. After solvent cleaning, a thin coat of Dow Corning1200 OS Primer is applied by dripping, brushing or spraying. Atnormal room temperatures and humidity conditions (room tempera-ture, 50% relative humidity), the primer should be allowed to airdry from 15 to 90 minutes. The primer cures in contact with airmoisture, low humidity will necessitate longer drying time

The required drying time for a specific area should be determinedprior to use. Primer which was allowed to cure extensively willnot promote adhesion anymore. As a general rule, drying time ofmore than 6 hours at normal temperatures and humidity shouldbe avoided.

Cure TimeAfter skin formation, cure continues inward from the surface. In 24 hours (at room temperature and 50% relative humidity)Dow Corning adhesive/sealant will cure to a depth of about 2-4mm.Very deep sections, especially when access to atmospheric moistureis restricted, will take longer to cure completely. Cure time isextended at lower humidity levels.

As the sealants cure by reaction with moisture in the air, keep thecontainer tightly sealed when not in use. A plug of used materialmay form in the tip of a tube or cartridge during storage. This iseasily removed and does not affect the remaining contents.

CompatibilitySome Dow Corning adhesives/sealants release a small amount ofacetic acid during cure. This may cause corrosion on some metallicparts or substrates, especially in direct contact or when the cure iscarried out in a totally enclosed environment which would notallow cure by-products to escape.
