With rotary valves, the highestpressure drop occurs when thevalve is shut off. When the valve isopen, pressure drop is normallymuch lower. However, pressuredrop capabilities of a rotary valvealso are lower when the valve isopen. The allowable flowingpressure drop across a valvedepends on the valve construction,valve position, the type of flowingfluid (liquid or gas), and on the vaporpressure and critical pressure ratioof liquids.
