Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.

welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst;
• To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;
• To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among
parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;
• To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God
within and beyond the Parish;
• To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our
assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to

A Reflection on Job 42
Overview: According to the Fathers, Job finally obtains justification from God when he openly
recognizes God’s omniscience and control over every event in human life (OLYMPIODORUS) and
shows his sincere humility (GREGORY) and the fullest repentance (CHRYSOSTOM). A person asks
a question in order to be able to learn that of which he is ignorant; for a person to question God is to
acknowledge that he is ignorant in his sight (GREGORY). It is evident that the Fathers see in Job an
anticipation of the fundamental virtues of Christian life. Job had not been delivered yet from his trial
when he repented, but still was in the midst of his torments when he spoke so. Job now becomes priest
while the visitors bring offerings. He had made sacrifices for his children; now he makes them for his
friends. One who accuses the righteous will have to expiate a serious fault (CHRYSOSTOM).
God’s Purpose Cannot Be Thwarted
JOB RECOGNIZES GOD’S OMNISCIENCE: [Job] openly declares that he had not learned these
things before but had now come to know the unconquered power of God. And since God penetrates
the decisions of people and understands the thoughts of all, there is nobody who can hide from his eye,
which sees everything. Who is he, he says, who being spared of words, can hide the secrets of his
mind in silence, because they have not been expressed in words?
Olympiodorus, Commentary on Job 42.1-3
Hear, and I Will Speak
THE HUMAN SENSES: To hear is, with us, to adapt our ear, which is in one place, to a sound that
comes from another. But with God, on the other hand, to whom nothing is external, hearing is properly
for him to perceive our longings that are rising up beneath him. For us then to speak to God, who is
acquainted with the hearts even of those that hold their peace, is not for us to utter what we think with
the words of our throat but to long for him with eager desires. A person asks a question in order to be
able to learn that of which he is ignorant; for a person to question God is to acknowledge that he is
ignorant in his sight. But for God, to reply is for him to instruct with his secret inspirations the one who
humbly acknowledges his ignorance.

The Liturgy of the Word
THE OLD TESTAMENT READING Be seated
Reader A reading from the Book of Job.
Then Job answered the Lord: "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of
yours can be thwarted. 'Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I
have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not
know. 'Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you declare to me.' I had heard of
you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and
repent in dust and ashes." And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job when he had prayed
for his friends; and the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. Then there came
to him all his brothers and sisters and all who had known him before, and they ate bread
with him in his house; they showed him sympathy and comforted him for all the evil
that the Lord had brought upon him; and each of them gave him a piece of money and a
gold ring. The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; and he had
fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand
donkeys. He also had seven sons and three daughters. He named the first Jemimah, the
second Keziah, and the third Keren happuch. In all the land there were no women so
beautiful as Job's daughters; and their father gave them an inheritance along with their
brothers. After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children, and his
children's children, four generations. And Job died, old and full of days. Job 42:1-6, 10-17

THE EPISTLE READING
Sub-deacon A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews.
Furthermore, the former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by
death from continuing in office; but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he
continues forever. Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God
through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was fitting that
we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners,
and exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he has no need to offer
sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he
did once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests those who
are subject to weakness, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law,
appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever. Hebrews 7:23-28
Sub-deacon The word of the Lord.
lllAll Thanks be to God.

peace in thy borders, and filleth thee with the finest of the wheat.

THE HOLY GOSPEL All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
They came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho,
Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard
that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have
mercy on me!" Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly,
"Son of David, have mercy on me!" Jesus stood still and said, "Call him here." And they
called the blind man, saying to him, "Take heart; get up, he is calling you." So throwing
off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, "What do you
want me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "My teacher, let me see again." Jesus
said to him, "Go; your faith has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and
followed him on the way. Mark10:46-52

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Kneel
Celebrant All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy
tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to
suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect
sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to
continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming
again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks
to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which
is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” +
Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks,
he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new
covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins:
Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with
these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath
commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious
death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again
with power and great glory.
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word
and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be
unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.
lllAll We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee,
Lord our God.
Celebrant And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and
bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may
worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled
with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church
may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the
same Jesus Christ our Lord;
By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and
glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end.
lllAll Amen.

Today - Prayer in Islam
Leader: Niall Christie, Corpus Christi College
Meaning and Ritual: After a brief introduction to the faith as a whole, we will explore prayer in
Islam. In the religion prayer takes two major forms, salat (ritual prayer) and du'a (personal
supplication). We will address these two practices in terms of both their physical, ritual forms and
their inner religious significance, considering how they enable the Muslim to re-affirm his or her
faith and to connect with God.
Mystics Series
The defining feature of mystical experience is its ineffability. Nevertheless, over the ages, those
who have achieved mystical union with the divine have devoted themselves to communicating
their experience to others. Many mystics have also sought to instruct others in the discipline of
contemplation in the hopes that by God’s grace their readers may themselves know spiritual
ecstasy. In this series we explore the rich English tradition of mystical writings. We begin in the
Middle Ages with four influential fourteenth-century mystics: Richard Rolle, the author of The
Cloud of Unknowing, Walter Hilton, and St. Julian of Norwich. Particular emphasis will be given
to St. Julian and we will look at her writings in depth. We end with consideration of William Law,
an eighteenth-century moral theologian and mystical writer, whose works (e.g. A Serious Call to a
Devout and Holy Life) play a crucial role in the great Evangelical Revival.

fall of 2013 and it addresses the question of how to
build relationships based on trust. These are two
of the issues that Bishop Mark will be addressing.
