Depending on availability, a small number of tickets may be for sale at venues 30 minutes before shows start, but remember that this will not happen if the show is sold out so book in

advance!

All HIFA tickets entitle you to free entrance into the Harare Gardens site and National Gallery of Zimbabwe on the day of the show for which you have a ticket. Make sure you’re stamped at all venues if you intend to visit the Gardens site later that day. Site Admission Tickets for

entry to the Gardens and National Gallery are available from Box Office (US$6).

BOX OFFICE tErMs AND CONDItIONs There are NO refunds or returns on HIFA tickets. (In the event of a cancellation or a

rescheduled performance, HIFA will exchange tickets for other performances.)

Please make sure you have the correct tickets BEFORE leaving the counter. No refunds or exchanges will be issued once you have left the Box Office. Also make sure you check for

double booking of shows.

YOU WILL NOT BE ADMITTED INTO A HIFA SHOW IF YOU ARE LATE. Please be punctual and allow enough time to get to the various venues. Factor in traffic and parking when you purchase

tickets.

Please check your tickets before you present them at the venue to make sure you hand over the right ticket. HIFA will not replace or reissue tickets.

Be WarM The evening shows at Telecel Main Stage, Lay's Global Stage and Coca-Cola Green can get a

bit chilly, so dress warmly! It is late autumn/early winter in Zimbabwe and so cool evenings, possible rain and cold winds are expected.

are yOU SITTING COMFOrTaBly?Feel free to bring along chairs and picnic blankets to appropriate Telecel Main Stage shows. To avoid confusion and sightline problems, those with chairs must find a spot on the right side of the grass arena facing the stage, whilst their lower lying, picnicking companions

sitting on the grass should keep to the left of the arena. Be warned that some shows will attract large standing audiences so leave chairs, picnics and blankets at home and feast on

the atmosphere instead.

HIFa ParKINGEasipark Harare offers the best parking in town with guarded, safe and secure parking at

Samora Machel Parkade, Julius Nyerere Parkade and Parklane Parking Lot. The parking facilities are affordable at $3 per entry. Samora Machel Parkade is situated at corner Samora Machel Avenue and Second Street. Julius Nyerere Parkade is situated at Julius Nyerere Way

opposite Zimpost. Parklane Parking Lot is situated at corner Leopold Takawira and Parklane Street.

Easipark Harare will be selling parking tickets at the HIFA box offices at Avondale and Harare Gardens. Only parking tickets purchased for the day shall apply and payments will be made at the exit for those without advance parking tickets at $3 per entry provided they produce a

014 If ever there was a year that I felt we were

going to have to postpone HIFA, it was this one. The Festival has been struggling to survive and it is only through the passion, compassion and determination of the HIFA Team that it is still alive. The theme SWITCH ON is therefore very appropriate to HIFA’s situation. There is so much apathy around us and a real element of not caring about each other or important initiatives, such as HIFA, that are so obviously struggling to continue. We truly need to SWITCH ON as a people and take a definite interest in our surroundings, our streets, each other, our country and its future. I have the honour of working with the most SWITCHED ON team of Zimbabweans. My appreciation for them and what they achieve is huge. The Zimbabwean corporate community is likewise SWITCHED ON to HIFA, not only as a mutually beneficial initiative, but as a national enterprise whose importance to community and artistic development cannot be underestimated. I strongly encourage HIFA audiences to take

note of these companies and give them the support they so richly deserve. SWITCH ON to the Diplomatic and Donor community – they continue to show support of the Zimbabwean people and contrary to what may be said about them, do care a great deal about our country and her people. The Media continues to symbiotically work with HIFA and show that nation-building is not only in the realm of politics. Appreciation and encouragement of HIFA is the definite remit of the HifAmigos – what a collection of SWITCHED ON and active Zimbabweans who believe in our country and show it affirmatively through their support of HIFA. The Festival’s new Chairman, Muchadeyi Masunda has proved a tower, not only of strength, but wisdom. He and the HIFA Board of Trustees have offered invaluable help and advice to myself and the rest of the Team. SWITCH ON – as the incoming Chairman of the HIFA Board of Trustees, this theme resonates with me. The boundless enthusiasm with which the advent of HIFA is viewed each year is amazing. SWITCH ON invites all of us to see ourselves as patriotic Zimbabweans in a new way. We have the innate strength within ourselves to transform our communities in order to radiate something truly positive. What a wonderful call to action. I am acutely aware of the invaluable work which has been undertaken by the Board of Trustees, in close conjunction with the HIFA Management Team. All sorts of daunting hurdles have been overcome by the indefatigable Management Team, ably led by Maria Wilson, and culminated in the production of the most exhilarating HIFA programme to date. However, this is not the end of the story because without the co-operation of various champions of the HIFA cause, this Festival

would not have come to fruition. Accordingly, I would like to extend my heart-felt thanks to our corporate partners, Government Ministries, Embassies, Donors, Security Agents, the National Arts Council, the City of Harare, the Media and other stakeholders for their unstinting support of the Festival. Zimbabwe is an incredibly resilient country. I know that the distinctly warm Zimbabwean hospitality will be extended to all local and international artistes who will be performing during this year’s edition of HIFA. We are so proud to have the artistes as an integral part of this spectacular initiative which not only unifies our people but also lifts their spirits in an unprecedented way. I am so proud to call myself a part of the incredibly creative group of people who make HIFA happen each year. We are an agile team and Board who adapt and evolve constantly to serve the needs of the Festival that we all love. THe HIFa 2014 OPeNING SHOW ON TeleCel MaIN STaGePresented by BANCABC in association with HIVOS

HIFA’s spectacular Opening Show draws inspiration from our theme this year, from the resilience of Zimbabwe’s artistic community, from our communal search for enlightenment, and from Doris Lessing’s story, ‘The Sun Between Their Feet’ which tells of the repeated determined attempts of two dung beetles to scale the heights of a rock with their precarious cargo…

Featuring musicians and dancers appearing in several HIFA 2014 shows including A Simple Space, Remix Culture, and Tumbuka’s two programmes, as well as performers

from Barefeet Theatre Zambia and Zimbabwe’s Drum Café. With Musical Direction by Steve Dyer, the show is anchored by the incredible artistry of South African jazz pianist, Kyle Shepherd, who will be joined by Zimbabwean and South African jazz stars in a performance that ignites light in the darkness, contemplation in chaos and redemption in struggle.

CaBS OPera GalaThis magical evening under the stars in the luscious Harare Gardens includes favourite opera selections from Puccini’s romantic La Bohème, Verdi’s masterpieces Aida and Rigoletto, and Saint Saens’ brilliant Samson and Delilah. Performing will be opera stars from around the world, bringing the greatest operatic heroes and heroines to life.

The Zimspiration choir, trained by Kundisai Mtero, will join the soloists in several well-known choruses. The Gala will be accompanied by string players from the Amici Quartet performing in the HIFA 2014 classical music programme presented by KPMG, double bass player Marike Prins and percussionists Dylan Tabisher and Cherilee Adams, led by the astonishing pianist, conductor and Musical Director, Jerry Steichen.

Award winning soprano, MARSHA THOMPSON, praised by the New York Times for her “…stellar performance of Violetta…revealing a warm agile soprano” has also been applauded for her performances of Mimi in La Bohème and Bess in Porgy and Bess. “Soprano Thompson was simply the finest Bess we have yet seen and heard.” Classical Voice of North Carolina

Hailed by the New York Times for his “robust voice, agility and confidence,” tenor ROBERT MCPHERSON sang Lord Percy with Welsh National Opera in Anna Bolena this season. His performance in Der Rosenkavlier with San Francisco Opera prompted the San Francisco Chronicle to exclaim that he “brought the first act to a stunned stop with his strikingly beautiful account of the Italian Tenor’s aria.”

Operatic engagements include the title role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni for Mid Wales Opera; Schaunard La Bohème for Opera Holland Park and Scarpia Tosca for Grange Park Opera.

JERRy STEICHEN is the Principal Pops Conductor of the Utah Symphony, Music Director of the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra, and Principal Pops Conductor of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted Virginia Opera, Boston Pops, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo City Symphony, the NDR Philharmonie Hannover, and the Norwegian Radio Symphony.

Mezzo-soprano KRySTy SWANN’s 2012-2013 season includes her return to the Metropolitan Opera for their revival of Die Walkure and their new production of Francesca da Rimini. Ms. Swann was featured on the cover of Opera News with acclaimed dramatic mezzo Dolora Zajick.

Singer, dancer and percussionist from the Ivory Coast, Dobet Gnahoré inherited the force of the “Bété“ tradition from her father, Boni Gnahoré, a master percussionist who plays with the Abidjan-based Ki-Yi Mbock Company, directed by Werewere Liking. From Mandingue melodies to Congolese rumba, from Ivory Coast Ziglibiti to Cameroon Bikoutsi, from Ghanian High-Life to Zulu choirs, Dobet's music is varied and colourful. Her poly-national band adds sanza, balafon, calebasse, bongos, guitar and vocal backup to Dobet’s warm and powerful voice.

Widely considered one of contemporary African music’s most exciting talents, Dobet has astounded audiences with her thrilling stage presence, appealing melodies, delicate ballads, upbeat African grooves and powerful singing. Formed by two drumming virtuosos, Blessing Chimanga from Zimbabwe and Massimo Covini from Italy, Zimboita embodies cross-cultural experimentation and the fusion of musical styles from two very different corners of the world. Black Bazar is led by musicians Modogo Abarambwa and Sam Tshintu, two remarkable artists on the Congolese music scene. John Withers is an uncannily modern figure. Hailing from Cape Town, the 25-year-old is an internet-raised musical sponge, taking in dub reggae, R&B, classical, jazz, high-speed African dance music, electro-pop, tropicalia, folk, Congolese rumba, and Mali meditative music.

It’s John’s collaboration with Rwandan vocalist Emmanuel Nzaramba, that gives this group’s music it’s tasty sound. The music is light and airy as a souffle, seemingly effortless in its elaboration. And that’s what makes these guys wizards.

Their jewel of a song “Lusaka at Night” propelled them out of their African indie enclave and onto the big wide internet, where they’ve been sopping up accolades from the likes of Pitchfork and The Guardian. The duo will be joined by several other musicians from the Cape Town scene for their HIFA debut.

The fabulous Vibe Culture, who has forged an incredible reputation working alongside the late Chiwoniso Maraire, collaborate with the talented Zimbabwean singer, RUE.

Influenced by Brenda Fassie and Nina Simone, it was Chiwoniso who mentored, encouraged and launched RUE. Playing what is best described as

‘afro mbira rock fusion’, her powerful vocal delivery, with Vibe Culture’s rich and layered arrangements, have quickly gained recognition, attracting a growing following.

Paul Colman returns to HIFA for another modern choral performance, Karl Jenkins’s Stabat Mater. From the moment the choir opens with the line ‘stabat mater dolorosa’ (the sorrowful Mother was standing) this beautiful and profound work takes the listener on a journey through one of the most poignant medieval poems, a meditation on the suffering of Mary during the crucifixion of Her Son. The poem is woven around six other texts, some from ancient sources, in a variety of languages.

Jenkins says of his music “if I had to describe it, I would say that it sounds like nothing else, which is very satisfying”.

After the overwhelming response to their HIFA 2013 show, veteran American conductor and choir leader Pastor Chantel Wright with singers from Songs of Solomon (Harlem, New York City) return to Zimbabwe to join Zimspiration, HIFA’s young people’s choir for this concert.

A thriving part of the Harlem music community, Songs of Solomon (SOS) has been seen on the Early Show on CBS, collaborated with Earth Wind and Fire, Carol King, Elton John, Kelly Clarkson, Ashford and Simpson and Aretha Franklin, touring in the United States and abroad, winning numerous competitions, and serving in churches from their Harlem base.

Under the inspirational guidance of SOS’s charismatic director, Pastor Chantel Wright, a group of New York singers will collaborate with 50 young Zimbabwean choir singers in an intense workshop period to prepare this special concert of classic and contemporary gospel and spiritually uplifting songs. The Zimbabwean choir is led by the incomparable Kundisai Mtero, who has become such a pivotal figure on the local school music scene. Billy St John leads the band, made up of musicians from Harare and New York.

An opportunity to enjoy the finest American and Zimbabwean gospel music in this inspirational family event on Telecel Main Stage.

SwItCHED ON NEtwORKSHIFA believes in the communal spirit of togetherness and assistance in artistic endeavours. Consequently, HIFA is a member of a number of networks that promote African artistic industry activities. HIFA is a member of the African Music Festivals Network, The Firefest Route (Southern African Festival Tour Circuit) and the Zimbabwe Festival Network.

As was the case last year, 2014 will once again see festival directors, administrators and producers from around the world congregating at HIFA for a Festival Directors’ Get-Together. The aim is to promote networking and also scouting of artists, particularly Zimbabwean artists, by visiting decision makers from other festivals, thus promoting Zimbabwean talent beyond the country’s borders.

SwItCHING ON tALENtHIFA will again host a wide range of workshops, supported by the United Nations Zimbabwe, for the general public as well as master classes for creative industry professionals. The public workshops are important for the fostering of a greater appreciation of the Arts within audiences whilst they get an opportunity to interact more closely with the very stars they would be coming to see perform on HIFA stages. Artistic cross-pollination from master classes are another way in which HIFA fulfils its mandate of promoting greater cross-cultural interaction resulting in novel creative enterprises.

HIFA also actively assists various Zimbabwean artistic endeavours throughout the year, particularly other festivals. HIFA regularly lends (at no cost) equipment, and offers advice and expertise to assist in the staging of these artistic activities that are independent of HIFA. Additionally the Festival holds workshops and discussion groups with artists in order to address problems, share possible solutions, and work together towards more dynamic artistic development.

In conjunction with Old Mutual, HIFA will facilitate workshops for Zimbabwean artists that seek to impart financial management skills that are so critical in any creative sector. This is a continuation of Old Mutual’s Financial Literacy programme launched at HIFA 2013 and aimed at ordinary members of the public which has since spread to other parts of the country.

SwItCHED ON YOUtHSince its inception, HIFA has placed the youth at the core of its activities and organisational structure. The Festival has always drawn its largest contingent of event staff from ‘A’ level students and school-leavers. This has been part of its efforts at empowerment of young people and employment creation. Through their Festival involvement, these young Zimbabweans are trained and given work experience to equip them to be creative productive citizens.

Young people will also have a highly secure, dedicated Festival area in which they can enjoy performances and workshops. This area, the Simba Youth Zone, will also feature performances from schools and young artists from around the country.

HIFA is also training 70 street youths to be part of the event staff as in previous years. Not only are the youths trained in job-specific matters but they also receive life skills training from various professionals – HIFA will be working with PEPFAR in this regard.

FEStIvAL OF HEALtHHIFA , and the Arts generally, lends itself naturally to positive community engagement. In conjunction with the United States President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), HIFA 2014 will be using the Arts as a creative medium through which to spread the message of the importance of positive living. The PEPFAR First Street Stage in Harare’s First Street Mall will feature both HIFA 2014 artists as well as celebrity health message ambassadors who work with PEPFAR partners. Performances on this stage happen during each lunchtime of the Festival week, offering access to those with too little time or financial resources to enter the Festival site. This message of positive steps towards looking after one’s health will also be carried on HIFA uniforms and through various activities by people affirmatively endorsing the idea of positively being healthy.

SwItCHED ON tO COMMUNItY NEEDSHIFA always strives to support its host city, the City of Harare, in efforts towards promoting urban regeneration. HIFA actively supports the concept of the infrastructural integrity within the City as this also impacts on HIFA venues. In 2014, HIFA will engage in several efforts towards community assistance and infrastructure rejuvenation:

Trash collection by previously unemployed youths HIFA is piloting a project in which push carts will be used by youths to collect rubbish in several test areas in Harare’s high density suburbs. Not only is this pilot exploring potential employment sources as the youths, though they are volunteers, will receive modest stipends, but they will also be contributing to health promotion through public sanitation.

Free Public Toilet for WomenPublic ablution facilities in Harare are somewhat overburdened and those bearing the brunt of this burden are women. HIFA is working with the City of Harare on availing a renovated public lavatory dedicated for the use of women. It is hoped this will be a pilot that will see such renovation of facilities on a larger scale.

Assistance in Rejuvenation of ZIMCADA centreThere is a great need for addressing the issue of drug abuse which has become more rampant especially amongst the youth – which is a social group on which HIFA has always placed special focus. HIFA will work with City of Harare on not only the regeneration of the Zimbabwe Council for Alcohol and Drug Abuse (ZIMCADA) premises but also in exploring ways in which Art Therapy can be incorporated into drug rehabilitation efforts.

Apart from the endeavours carried out in conjunction with the City of Harare, HIFA will be working with its Green Partner, Environment Africa, in conducting environmental awareness activities. Environment Africa will have a team on the HIFA site that will be separating waste generated by the Festival. Environment Africa will also be engaging visitors to the Festival site in general environmental awareness campaigns.

Members of HIFA’s loyalty programme, the HifAmigos, have also independently started a crowd sourcing initiative to raise funds for the purchasing of learning and related material for school children affected by the floods that occurred earlier in parts of Zimbabwe such as Tsholotsho and Tokwe-Mukorsi . At HIFA our intention is to SWITCH ON to what is going on around us and not stand back waiting for something to happen. We see this as being the start of many such initiatives with more partners.

Open air seating, a variety of mouth-watering food stalls and talented live bands - Coca-Cola Green is the Festival’s premier meeting and eating place.

Before or after shows, SWITCH ON your senses and your taste buds in the vibrant atmosphere of the Green. Directed by New York based, Zingi Mkefa, this charming solo performance tells of a family of emigrants who settle in South Africa and amongst humble beginnings, find their passion as stage performers of Sleight of Hand while running the family grocer at the corner shop; their lives unfold as South Africa begins to burn under the oppression of Apartheid.

The highly praised production is a master class of sleight of hand magic, mime, mask work and physical theatre.

In 1971, nineteen citizens of Excelsior in South Africa’s white-ruled Free State were charged with breaking apartheid’s Immorality Act, which forbade sex between blacks and whites. This play focuses on the story of one such fallen Madonna and her family at the heart of the scandal. It explores the emotions

and endless searches of Niki’s daughter, for her real father and thus her true identity.

Adopted from Zakes Mda’s award winning novel of the same name, and directed by veteran director Roel Twijnstra, the production has a 13 member cast of immensely talented actors and singers, and enchants and unsettles with humour and truth. One of the most important South African productions this year, HIFA audiences have the opportunity to see a piece of theatrical history, that has already toured the most prestigious theatre venues across South Africa and further afield..

LOvERS IN tIME – A SURREAL COMEDY

Written by distinguished Zimbabwean playwright Blessing Hungwe, this new production has been developed in conjunction with acclaimed British director Agnieszka Piotrowska. The play explores some taboos around the legacy of Mbuya Nehanda and Kaguvi, leaders of the local uprising against the white settlers at the end of the 19th century.

Time travel enables Nehanda and Kaguvi to experience different bodies and genders.

An invitation to enter an absurd world of games that have been made up and are played out by four dancers on stage in real time. The various games expose the emotional world of the dancers and the power relations between them.

As the performance is created during the show, the rules of the choreographic game are exposed and the relationship between the performers and the audience is challenged. The audience is invited to take part in the piece and influence the evolution of the game.

The piece raises questions about the purpose of the game, who sets the rules and how these rules influence the interaction between the players, how far the players would go to achieve a desired outcome, and what happens if the rules are broken. It questions our sense of free choice and understanding of responsibility as players in our own personal and social games. NU12.

Hitasuka is the word from ancient Javanese meaning happiness and welfare. This engaging company will present traditional and contemporary dance pieces from Indonesia with mystical influences from Java, Sumatra and Bali. The production is a collaboration between Indonesian and Zimbabwean artists and offers Zimbabwean audiences an opportunity to experience the unusual and highly visceral blend of gamelan with Zimbabwean percussion. ALL AGES.

The region of Rajasthan has a rich tapestry of traditional local dances. This year, the Moru Sapera Dance Party comes to HIFA. Named after two of the most famous Rajasthani dances, this company promises audiences an authentic look at the enthralling dance styles of this area. Dances of worship, snake dances, vivid costuming and frenetic drumming are all on show in this audio-visual spectacle. ALL AGES.

This is a unique opportunity to experience the world famous Nanjing Little Red Flower Art Troupe, which has been a sensation across China for several generations. For HIFA 2014, the 22 young singers, dancers and musicians, aged between 6 and 12, perform a varied

programme of traditional folk and pop melodies, Chinese compositions, and classic songs from all over the world.

The troupe has won various awards at national children’s dance and music competitions, and toured over 20 countries and regions in Asia, Europe, America and Africa. Don’t miss this joyful and exuberant cultural experience.

ALL AGES.

He enters wearing an oversized orange hat and sunglasses, carrying a toolbox and a walking stick. From the toolbox he takes out a saw and a drill, saws off the end of the walking stick, drills holes in it, and hey presto, it’s a flute – which he plays beautifully. He invites a woman from the audience to dance, then puts a rose in the end of the flute before handing it to her. Gong Myoung, Korea’s globally celebrated musical export believe that if you can bash it and make a noise, you can make it sing. They create mood and harmony hitting a stone block with hollow bamboo pipes, or playing an empty water cooler as a drum.

These gifted and versatile musicians might lay down a South American dance beat as guitar meets maracas and pan pipes. Horns and a didgeridoo conjure wild horses. Then the tempo slows right down with guitar and flute. They perform with breathtaking timing, speed, passion, stamina and almost terrifying force in the seoljanggu, recreating the ebb and flow of a storm, their hands flying from one end of the drum to the other in a blur.

Don’t worry if you don’t know a thing about Korean music, if you don’t know your jing from your janggu. In case you hadn’t gathered, Gong Myoung mix traditional music with innovative, contemporary sounds to create a style that’s highly entertaining. They encourage plenty of audience participation, and their love of music and sense of fun is totally infectious. ALL AGES.

The Goethe Zentrum/ Zimbabwe German Society through Goethe-Institut South Africa in Cooperation with the Eunic Cluster members showcase a photographic exhibition, the first of its kind by participants of the Photographers’ Portfolio Meeting. It was co-curated by Sammy Baloji and Monique Pelser and initiated by the Goethe-Institut South Africa with Simon Njami.

The Eunic Cluster is a partnership between four organizations; British Council, Alliance Francaise, Italian Embassy and Goethe Zentrum/ Zimbabwe-German Society aimed at promoting the development of arts and culture in Zimbabwe.

ZBC TV provides full spectrum programmes which educate, inform and entertain Zimbabweans at home and beyond. The station has four business units which are:

Sportnet which brings all sporting programmes to viewers, Kidznet endeavours to provide entertainment and educational programming for children and youths aged between 3-18 years.

ZBC TV Productions presents local productions that portray Zimbabwean life through dramas and musicals while the Commercial Production Unit (CPU) provides afforda-ble advertisements which inform and portray the client business trust

ZBC News plays the fundamental role of telling the story of Zimbabwe by Zimba-bweans. It provides an hourly update on local, regional and international news. Good Morning Zimbabwe is an early morning bulletin offering up to the minute updates on news, traffic and weather reports. The Current Affairs Department provides an in-depth insight into current topical issues.

Channel 2 is ZBC’s second television channel. It commenced broadcasting in May 2011. It is purely an entertainment station, catering for the younger generation. The station has on its schedule the latest movies, dramas, sitcoms and magazine pro-grammes. It broadcasts from 6am to 12 midnight everyday.
