Historical notesHickleton Hall was commissioned and constructedbetween 1745-8 by Godfrey Wentworth of Woolleyand built by architect James Paine. The house wasextended in 1777 with the addition of a servant'squarters and two low wings on either side of themain hall. The hall was inherited by Woolley'sgrandson upon his death in 1789, though afterthe failure of his banking business Godfrey Woolleywas forced to sell the property. Hickleton Hall wasacquired by Sir Francis Linley Wood, 2nd Baronet ofHemsworth and Garrowby and passed downthrough the Wood family to local MP CharlesWood who later became Chancellor of theExchequer and was created Viscount Halifax in1866. His son Edward Wood, the 3rd ViscountHalifax was both Viceroy

of India and Foreign Secretary being created Earl Halifax in1944. The Hall was used by British Army during WWII. The Halifaxfamily moved in 1947 to their estate at Garrowby, havingleased Hickleton Hall to the order of the Holy ParacleteConvent who ran the hall as St Hilda's Church ofEngland girls school. The Sue Ryder Trust bought the hall in 1961and ran it as a care home until 2012.
