DescriptionHickleton Hall is most impressive and grandlyproportioned country house requiringrefurbishment but with many preservedoriginal features. The Hall presents most attractivearchitecture and is constructed of limestone ashlarwith relief offered by Georgian casement windowsand under slate roofs. Internally, there are highceilings with some very good mouldings, wonderfulchimney pieces, excellent internal joinery includingsome very attractive door cases.

The main staircase is especially noteworthy. Thehall stands in attractive gardens providing a finesetting for the Hall. The property is currently vacant,and appears to offer an exciting opportunity for anumber of uses including residential,educational, corporate or hospitality. Historical notesHickleton Hall was commissioned and constructedbetween 1745-8 by Godfrey Wentworth of Woolleyand built by architect James Paine. The house wasextended in 1777 with the addition of a servant'squarters and two low wings on either side of themain hall. The hall was inherited by Woolley'sgrandson upon his death in 1789, though afterthe failure of his banking business Godfrey Woolleywas forced to sell the property. Hickleton Hall wasacquired by Sir Francis Linley Wood, 2nd Baronet ofHemsworth and Garrowby and passed downthrough the Wood family to local MP CharlesWood who later became Chancellor of theExchequer and was created Viscount Halifax in1866. His son Edward Wood, the 3rd ViscountHalifax was both Viceroy

of India and Foreign Secretary being created Earl Halifax in1944. The Hall was used by British Army during WWII. The Halifaxfamily moved in 1947 to their estate at Garrowby, havingleased Hickleton Hall to the order of the Holy ParacleteConvent who ran the hall as St Hilda's Church ofEngland girls school. The Sue Ryder Trust bought the hall in 1961and ran it as a care home until 2012.
